What's up with the Live Traffic Feed thingie at the bottom of the board? I have mixed feelings about it in some ways...Is there a genuine interest in having this, an experiment, or is it some new novel thingie that's all the rage on forums these days?

What are your mixed feelings? It is placed somewhere that nobody has to look at if they are not interested.

The first day I was interested in seeing where people came from that found themselves on the Port, but wondering why it was suddenly there. I felt quite 'international'. The novelty soon wore off and I think that it clutters up the Home Page. I don't know about anyone else, but the way that I look at my screen, I am usually forced to see it.

What are your mixed feelings? It is placed somewhere that nobody has to look at if they are not interested. Well, initially,I thought it was cool that one got to see all the various places that people from all over the world,as Jazz says,"international" come and visit. But,in another sense,I feel sometimes, that I would like to lurk, and that it somehow invades this option to do so anonymously. The large majority of members know my origins, and there are some days that I like to be invisible, incognito,as it were, and this violates that.Something about "being tracked" that doesn't sit quite right with me. I do have a paranoid streak I admit. I would prefer that it be an option for members. And,again,I am curious as to why it is there, purely from a being nosy perspective. Is it meant to help lure more posters,or what?

It is an option. Just click on its "menu" to be ignored.

It is an option. Just click on its "menu" to be ignored. I tried this several times, perhaps I'm doing it wrong, please advise. It continues to "track" me, despite. I click on the menu, choose the please ignore me option and still show up on the tracking display.

I clicked on the menu to ignore my browser, but it isn't!
However, on the upside, while I was exploring the contents of the Real Time Menu, I noticed that Kerouac came on a minute ago. (just rechecked and it is now 12 minutes ago) This is great for stalking information.
Not only do I know to the second when you came on, it gave me your country, what browser you use, if you're running on Apple etc and if you arrived directly or from a referral site. mmmm...must delve further into this goldmine of info and see what else I can come up with.

Ha ha -- people still think there is some privacy in the world! I confess that I have the same problem with Internet Explorer -- clicking on the menu of that thing does not give me the menu. so I used the Google Chrome browser to click on the menu and had no problem. I think there is no problem with Firefox either. If I have not eliminated my presence from the feed, it is because I just do not care if you know how often I am here. If I were to suddenly disappear, you would still know that I am here.

Some semblence of privacy to me is better than none...that being said, please advise me further,as to how to get the thing to ignore me,not in this thread, but ,on the LIVE Traffic Feed! I have gone to the menu, clicked on the ignore me option,(5 times now),and it is still acknowledging when I come to this site. Much appreciated.

Casimira, if you are using Internet Explorer, clicking on Menu does nothing, but if you click on Real-Time View at the bottom of the feed ( where you can see all of the information), at the top left there is a box---Remove Your IP. This will remove you.
You’re right, there is little privacy left. I suppose I could understand that the Moderators of the forum might need this information, offline, but do all the members and the 200+ of my ‘new best friends’ visiting daily need to track each other, second by second, and view the rest of my info? Anyway, I appear to have disappeared from its remorseless scrutiny.
Kerouac's right, Casimira, I haven't seen you either in about the last hour. It seemed to take about 10 minutes to go into effect.

When you are visible, you are also be listed as the first visitor. "This could be you!" is only for you. Mine says "This could be you!" and lists Paris France, but it also lists Paris, France as the most recent visitor when I have just arrived.

As a part time poster and a regular lurker, I hate to complain. But having been at the wrong end of some stalking, I really do not like this feature.
I know that we all have a delusion of some kind of privacy on internet forums, but this for me is just a bit toooo much information.

If you put my name and my email address on a porn site I would have mixed feelings too, even though "nobody has to look at (them) if they are not interested" - Same logic. ---- I have removed my IP address from the "Live Traffic Feed" and it seems to work until now but I wonder for how long. Is it possible to remove my IP once and for all ? >> (I'm not posting from Toronto) Actually I don't care much that the other members see when I'm online but I'm annoyed that anyone can see which other websites I visit (see below)

Is it a feature you have added (and for what purpose) or is it imposed by proboards ?

Post by Jazz on Aug 29, 2010 21:39:43 GMT
It isn't imposed by Proboards. I belong to three other Proboards sites which don't have this feature.
No one seems to know why it's here.

Welcome to the internet. Have you not been reading all of the news about this? NOTHING is private anymore. I should like to be informed if private information about me is being made public through this forum without my permission. The terms of privacy that Proboards provides for this forum does not include this. It says that traffic feed data may be and or is collected but,it does not say that the information is going to be made public to the general public. If you don't have a problem with it,fine. I do. I have been stalked several times in my life and know others who have as well. I feel strongly that my right to privacy has been violated here. I also resent the fact that this OP/thread was ignored completely until I posted a second time in here asking what I feel are appropriate questions about personal information of I and other members/visitors. And,no one has answered the question in the original post as to why this is being done.

This information should only be accessible through Administrative Control Panel or whatever the equivalent is in this software and should never be public, and particularly on a small board where it's relatively simple to connect users to the information published.
It's completely inconceivable to me that anyone ever thought this was even remotely appropriate to do, never mind an idea actually worth implementing. The insensitivity and disregard for the users' privacy is truly world class. The mind boggles in fact.

Well, this must be a world class site. However, in this world in which people seem to be afraid of everything, I am curious at the perceived danger or indignity of being openly shown something that every single website knows already.
"Out of sight, out of mind?"
I am personally infuriated by the lists of viewing suggestions on YouTube -- "look at this because you looked at...." or the suggestions by Amazon that I should buy a certain book because I was purportedly interested in a similar one.
Every single thing that we do every day on the internet is tracked. If anybody is worried about a playful gadget that identifies the name of the city of a user, you need to yank that power cord out of the wall right this instant.

Kerouac, you can go on and on and on trying to justify this, use all the information you like to try to defend what is clearly not your right to do. I would rather at this point, you and your helper take responsibility for doing some thing with information that you do not have the right to do on here.
