Fabulous photos, FMT, and I will be eternally grateful that somebody relieved me of Christmas duties this year!
Frankly, I find your night shots are superior to mine, because my camera overcompensates for the darkness and makes absolutely everything look like I am living in some sort of eternal twilight.

Ooooooo ~~ these are wonderful, Fmt!
I'm a sap for monumental municipal holiday lighting, particularly when they intersperse all kinds of more modern touches in with the traditional stuff. It's all gorgeous ~~ the blue swags of lights, the last pic in #2, with the golden waves and the rays behind the statue. But the ferris wheel (3rd pic from bottom, #1) just about made my heart burst into song.

I do have a bit of information about the Ferris wheel. It is the largest mobile Ferris wheel in the world (a bit smaller than the London Eye, though). However, it has been a very successful item, because it has up to now been sold in 57 different models around the world -- rare for something that is often "one of a kind."

Lovely, lovely pictures as always. FMT.
There can't be any nicer and more magical place to be at Christmas then Paris at night time.

Wow, thanks everyone. I almost didn't post this because I was so disappointed in the quality of the photos. But since I had spent several hours walking around Paris taking these shots I didn't want it all to be for naught.
Honestly kerouac I much prefer your camera and your photos. With the one I used all night time photos are blurry and yours are so crisp and clear. I think your camera captures things the way they look to the naked eye. I was just telling the Mrs. that when I break down and buy another camera I want to buy the one you use.
If anyone has any good recommendations for a camera between 200 and 300 euros I'm all ears. It is crucial that it takes good outdoor day time and night time photos.

I actually felt like I'd taken a walk with you after looking at those, so they worked fine. I knew you'd work Galaries Lafayette and Au Printemps in here ;D

Spectacular FMT! Not crummy photos at all, in fact. I love all of your photos...and for me, the more Christmas lights the better. (We have very few municipal decorations in Phoenix, because the taxpayers think its a waste of money. I live in Scrooge-land.) If it will cheer you up, I will post photos of my recent trip to LA. including a touristy stroll through Hollywood. All taken with my iPhone camera because the memory card in my digital camera went AWOL. You will look like Ansel Adams next me.

cristina - I still am not happy with the quality of the photos but am reassured others find some quality in them. Yes, municipal funds for beautification are sadly lacking all over the U.S. when compared to France. I have never been to LA so I would love for you to post some photos of a touristy walk there. That would be kinda fun.

What camera are you currently using? What type of camera are you looking for? Pocket-able? Long zoom? Good low light? I'm a lurker...However, I really enjoy reading the boards and viewing the pics.

thill25 - I'm using an old Ricoh which takes OK pix during the day but not so good at night. Just looking for a good all around pocket-size camera for outdoor day and night pix. Lurk no longer and join the forum! Or just continue to lurk, which is fine too.

You should check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5...I have the older version (LX3) and it takes great day, indoor (low-light) and night pics. Not sure what the price point is in Europe...I've seen it here for $350. The only downside is the zoom range isn't the greatest.
I'll join the forum soon...I have some questions regarding an upcoming trip to France.

I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-T27 which is probably not made anymore since the models change so fast. The next model up was the first one that could put a GPS code into every photo and embed them in a map. If I still travelled anywhere, I might have liked that.

Thanks fmt for this walk through Paris at Christmas time, for those of us who can't or won't travel over the holidays.
And for those who were on their way to Paris when the snowstorms closed all three NYC airports and cancelled ten thousand flights....

^^ If the water seems choppy I imagine it is just the result of the wake left by the boats moving up and down the river. Thanks for your viewing participation.
