In most of the world using the Gregorian calendar, it is on January 1st. Eastern Orthodox churches in the following countries have also adopted January 1st as the year: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Romania, Syria and Turkey.
The Tamil new year is hypothetically on January 14, but not everybody agrees. The Eastern Orthodox churches that have not adopted January 1st as the new year also consider January 14th to be the new year. That means Georgia, Jerusalem, Russia, the Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine.
Chinese and Vietnamese new year can fall any time between January 21 and February 21. In 2011, the date is February 3 (year of the rabbit).
Tibetan new year is any time between January and March. In 2011, the celebrations will begin on March 5.
Iranian new year begins on March 20 or 21.
The list goes on and on. In other words, we can celebrate the new year as long as we want.

And the year of the rabbit ends on January 22, 2012. Is it a lunar year?

Wasn't the time around March considered the new year in Europe for centuries? I think that's why Pisces is the first sign of the zodiac, because it falls in Feb/March.
What is Khmer New Year based on, HW? Whatever it is -- be sure to celebrate!
Shouldn't we be paying attention to the Mayan calendar, since it's the one that's going to kill us off next year?

When the world ends on December 21, 2012, there's supposed to be some village in France that will survive, and the villagers are really getting pissed off at all of the visitors. Welcome to Bugarach.

I think it was around the spring equinox. It seems reasonable -- spring and new growth and all that.

Anyway, you're safe, tod2, if we can believe the movie 2012 where Africa is the only continent to survive. Too bad that OnlyMark will be in Jordan by then -- no hope for him!

There is no way we will be safe if Africa survives........Can you imagine a world without Big Brother watching over us. Hell no, this place will be like a chicken-coop with too many roosters I hope to be in Sydney watching 2012 near the bridge!
