I mentioned just before about having too much filling in a sandwich and came across this when I had a spell living in San Francisco. It makes me wonder how on earth people eat that quantity. A pastrami sandwich I had illustrated that point when I took 80% of it out to make other things with. There are some examples and other sandwiches on this link. I do wonder about the camera angle but surely some of them you just can't eat - www.boredpanda.com/best-sandwiches-pics/?cexp_id=79164&cexp_var=39&_f=featured

Some of us wonder how to eat a chip butty without losing half of the filling.

That's why I have six fingers on each hand and a mouth the size of a basketball net.

It’s a very northern thing. We don’t have that down south. We have canapés.

I wonder what that translates as? Something with wind.

Volume of wind I think is the translation. I'm half certain I've seen fans for sale that specify how powerful they are by saying something about it can produce a hundred vol au vents. A combination of motor power and blade size. It's said in French because I believe Blériot invented the measurement before he flew the Channel.

Those sandwiches (in the link) look horrid and very greasy...imho. Chip butties are simply divine and are allowed to be greasy as the hot chips melt the butter on the (white sandwich loaf, preferably fresh crusty) bread....dribble dribble...
Darn it. Now I want a chip butty (not on my diet plan)...

I wonder what that translates as? Something with wind. "Gone* With The Wind" *(Literally, flight, but the similarity's too good to miss).

The reference to wind came when they changed the recipe from thick pastry to flaky pastry, which could fly away in a gust.

And the plural is an interesting question. Some - like me - would say vols-aux-vents. Others vol-aux-vents.

Those sandwiches (in the link) look horrid and very greasy...imho. I noticed that some of them were just regular sandwiches, but cut in half & the halves stacked to look bigger, as though only excess is appetizing. "Gone* With The Wind" *(Literally, flight, but the similarity's too good to miss). Frankly, my dear, that is worth a damn! And the plural is an interesting question. Some - like me - would say vols-aux-vents. That seems logical and correct.

Just had a look at that and it seems there are variations that are said to be the correct one for the plural form. Vol au vent, vols au vent, vol au vents and vols au vents. In fact, all combinations. The classiest thing we had at parties was a cheese and pineapple hedgehog.

For my tea tonight I had, from left to right, a radish and salted butter roll, onion and mayonnaise roll and a home made feta/chive spread (again) with radish. The usual sliced tomato as well.

Does this mean that every time you use bread and other ingredients, you call it a sandwich? Is beans on toast a sandwich, too? (But it doesn't look bad -- don't get me wrong.)

What about all those Scandinavian open-face sandwiches?
That plate looks ambrosial. I'll have to try onion and mayo in a sandwich -- mine have always been butter & onion.
Is the feta spread just feta with herbs, or did you use cream cheese or something to cut the saltiness?

Does this mean that every time you use bread and other ingredients, you call it a sandwich? Is beans on toast a sandwich, too? I suppose the definition involves having two slices of bread. Otherwise it specifies as with Bixa, an open sandwich, or it is defined by the type of roll/bap/barm/cob/baguette/banh mi/wrap/qesadilla/taco etc. If beans on toast was a sandwich then you wouldn't call it beans on toast I should think. Is the feta spread just feta with herbs, or did you use cream cheese or something to cut the saltiness? I could use a cream cheese if I find a decent one but usually it is feta or one of the hard white feta consistency like cheeses I can get here made from normal cow milk or sometimes goat milk. I don't buy the herbed stuff because I can't control the amount and besides I'm never too keen on the herbs anyway. If the cheese is salty I use unsalted butter. If the cheese is quite hard and not crumbly enough to make a spread I'll cut it with a dollop of creme fraiche or quark. Then just add some chives. Jacques Pépin does a nice onion sandwich based on a James Beard one -

Good idea. I shall forward your definition to the Oxford Dictionary to see if they agree.

I'm not surprised that the definition of "sandwich" has drifted over time, just like the weird variations that some people call a "quiche." After all, the languge came up with the term "open-faced sandwich" just because there was no equivalent to the Danish term Smørrebrød.
(Out of curiosity, I just checked Google Translate for the Danish word for sandwich, and it is... sandwich, whereas the Swedish term is smörgås.)

Had this for an early lunch. Apparently it is Korean street food according the the video that made me hungry. Cabbage, carrot and spring onion sort of omelette with a slice of cheese you can't see (I had cheddar), in butter fried/toasted/grilled bread. You can put ketchup and/or mayonnaise on the toast as you build it up if you want. I had a smear of ketchup -

Except for the bread, it is not dissimilar to Vietnamese banh-mi.
