It depends on which toe it is. The "big" toe if amputated would certainly pose problems with balance and gait. This is the "ring" toe on the left foot and if he does indeed have to have it amputated it shouldn't pose any problems in that regard. My thinking is that having to have any body part removed unless it's absolutely necessary should merit more than one medical opinion.

The other day there was a news flash about former president Jacques Chirac being suddenly hospitalised at the American Hospital, the place where the rich and famous go to die. Since he has Alzheimer's and looks pretty bad in the rare photos of him that appear in the press, everybody thought, "well, here he goes." But he was released a few hours later. Gout attack.

I can never forget the first time my husband had a gout attack. He, having an incredibly high tolerance for pain, his disdain for doctors and being a Paramedic for so many years, was and remains loathe to seeking medical treatment. Yet, in this instance, not knowing what was causing this intense pain told me "I have to go to the ER, it feels like someone ran over my foot with a car". He recently had the aforementioned toe removed, gratefully, without major incident. Everyone I know who has ever had any type of gout, all describe how intense the pain is. I remember trying to comfort my husband during one bout and just the gentle placing of a light cotton sheet on his foot drew an excruciating moan of pain.

In my only major gout attack, the fact that the medicine prescribed contained opium pleased me enormously. And boy, that stuff works really well. And the doctor was right to warn me that it would cause diarrhea.

I can safely say that living with someone in the throws of it is painful enough. Never, have I felt so helpless as to how to comfort someone.

My father was also a Type 1 diabetic (brought on by medication that destroyed his pancreas). He used one of those circulating foot tubs, as well as vibrating-type machines. All that seemed to help improve his circulation, and alleviated the pain somewhat. Not sure if the pain was caused more by the gout or the diabetes.

I have to admit that I have a new bout of gout, but it's entirely my fault because I haven't been taking the medicine that reduces uric acid regularly. Luckily, I still have enough of my opium pills to beat it back in a day or two, but I think that I have learned to be more careful in the future.
Instead of the gout being lodged in a big toe this time, it is in the ball of my foot just before the toe. Either place causes me to limp significantly.

Ouch. Sympathy. Before I had my numerous foot surgeries for arthritis and other such conditions (my feet are held together by 4 titanium pins now) I was in constant pain and every step was agony. It's one of the most annoying complaints to have, a sore foot joint.
My Dad gets gout occasionally and he finds that one or two doses of medication fixes it. Time for a doctor visit, K?

Hope you get over it soon, Kerouac. In response to LaGatta, but for all I know this might be useful for gout sufferers as well -- "They" say that bread, pasta are inflammatory foods. I have been having some knee pain in one knee that I've damaged repeatedly. A week or so ago I started a diet, so of course stopped eating any fattening carbohydrates. About three days after starting the diet, when I got up in the morning & descended the stairs, I realized that the pain & stiffness in the knee was almost completely absent. Okay, so very empirical & anecdotal, but maybe worth trying for a couple of weeks to see if it helps arthritic aches & pains.

Even though I am taking classic medicine, I read on the internet that drinking a concoction containing a little cider vinegar can help to relieve symptoms.
Actually, I am not at all in pain when I am not walking, which is already much better than last time when my toe throbbed through the night.

Black Cherry concentrate diluted into juice form or fresh black cherry juice if it's available to you imbibed daily is the most touted preventative. It's well documented and everyone I know prone to gout swears by it.

Well, I know I wouldn't be able to get my father to give up white bread, but I could probably pick him up some black cherry juice. The European Deli on Davie Street is run by Iranians and it is a magical place. They have black cherry juice imported from the Caspian Sea, as well as kangaroo meat, various preserved foods from all over Eastern Europe and Asia, and many flavours of halvah.

Those are expensive private nursing homes. Though elderly people also have a right to decent food. And beer!
An aside, why is beer so bad for gout? I keep reading that. There is obviously more alcohol in wine, but so many sites mention beer as a trigger.

My husband is recovering from the worst bout of gout he has ever had.
Generally, when he feels the very first signs of an attack he takes the prescribed medication for it but this episode came on so aggressively that within 24 hours his left hand was the size of a baseball mitt and accompanied by excruciating pain. He was not even able to dress himself, button a shirt or put his left arm through a sleeve.
His blood work indicated high uric acid levels and he had to get a steroid shot which resulted in tremendous relief and the Dr.also prescribed some other medication which was incredibly expensive even with insurance.
He is now on the mend thank goodness. The Dr. told him he has to avoid any alcohol which he is ok with now but months from now I am hoping that this does not become a power struggle with him. I don't think it will but...
All this occurred during the week he also had a case of mild pneumonia which came on with cold like symptoms that just were not going away.
Gratefully it did not attack his lungs but massive congestion and an ever persistent cough. High powered medications are treating these symptoms and he is improving every day.
Not a fun time in the "Q" household.

Thanks Mick.
I do believe we are "out of the woods" now.
And, I am fortunate in that my husband is not a whinny needy person although, very irritable and cranky but for a good reason.
I know many people who have spouses that are incredibly demanding and difficult when they are ill.
My husband is not one of "them".

Clearly the anti uric acid medication that I take regularly is very effective since I have not contributed to this thread since 2014. Reading about a flare-up makes me cringe, though, and I suppose I am lucky to have only had it in toes because having it in one's hand sounds particularly awful.

I used to take something called Allopurinol which turned out to not be strong enough, so I was switched to Adenuric, which works brilliantly. I actually take only half of the prescribed dose, which is more than enough. The brand names are likely to be different in the United States, but Google should enable you to find the equivalent product. As for an actual gout attack, I was prescribed something called Colchimax, which provides very quick relief and almost immediate diarrhea. It contains opium.
