Your boss is masochist, K! He's coming back to work next Tuesday (maybe). I am taking Tuesday morning off, then I am taking Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday day off the following week, and then Monday and Tuesday off the week after that. I am trying to stay healthy.

This Sunday's newspaper had an interesting article on Alzheimer's disease. Those with a parent who is elderly or already has symptoms of Alzheimer's may find it enlightening or a re-hash what you already know. I knew nothing of the cause or potential cures until now.
Heading: Hot Tip - Curry can curb that brain drain.
Few of us need much encouragement when it comes to eating curry. But scientists have com up with one of the best excuses ever; a spicy ingredient in curry could be an effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
Tests on fruit flies with a nervous disorder similar to the neurodegenerative illness found those given curcumin - the key chemical in turmeric used in everything from a mild korma to the hottest vindaloos - lived 75% longer. Alzheimer's is linked to the build-up of knots of protein in the brain called amyloid plaques, damaging the wiring in the brain cells. The findings, published in the journal PLoS One, could help explain why rates of dementia are much lower among the elderly in India than in their Western peers. Previous research has found Alzheimer's affects just one percent of people over the age of 65 living in some Indian villages. Drugs with properties similar to curcumin could potentially be used as preventative treatments. In the study, Professor Per Hammarstrom and colleagues also found five groups of fruit flies genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer's-type symptoms maintained their mobility longer when given curcumin. The scientists saw no decrease of amyloid in the Brain or eyes of the insects. Curcumin did not dissolve the plaque, but accelerated the formation of nerve fibres by reducing the amount of their precursor forms, known as oligomers, from which they were formed. Prof. Hammarstrom of Linkoping University in Sweden said, "The results confirm our belief that it is the oligomers that are most harmful to the nerve cells". Curcumin is extracted from the root of turmeric and has been used as medicine for thousands of years.

Yes, I had read about turmeric on the BBC site about two years ago already, and I am happy to say that it is something that I use regularly -- even when just cooking chicken or boiling potatoes, since I like the colour it gives them.
Yesterday, I was reading that overeating, and also waking up constantly through the night, could be a factor -- but the article was quick to say that it is far too soon to say whether it might be a cause of Alzheimer's or a symptom of Alzheimer's.
Frankly, I am pretty sure that in the end they will find the same thing they found out about cancer -- EVERYTHING causes it.

When my eldest grandson was about 7 or 8 I took him to Kew and he fell into a patch of Opuntia.......
I've had an Agave spike in my forehead and sat on one rather like Rikita.

My specialities as a child were thorns and briars for self-inflicted injuries since we had no convenient cacti available. During my year in France at age 11, I switched to nettles.

I went to the doctor for my 6 month blood pressure check up on Thursday. It was fine.
However, he also gave me a flu jab, a pneumonia jab and finally a shingles jab. The shingles is a live virus so they said I might not feel great for a couple of days. How right they were! All my joints ache and I have no energy whatsoever. I hope it passes soon.

5 kilos is quite a bit. Sounds wonderful in general. I presume you have your ears checked often, but that might be a specialist.

I try to stay well clear of the quack nowadays. As for weight watching, I was always one of those lucky people whose weight remained at a sensible level. However in recent times it has proceeded sharply in a northery direction.
I put that down to have entered my second childhood and am therefore growing again,.............. and no, red wine has nothing to do with it.

Do you cactus growers have any tricks of the trade for removing the thorns, prickles and worse...the almost invisible fuzz that attaches itself to your skin for days and hurts? I saw a woman fetch a roll of 10cm masking tape from her car to attend to her 4 year old who had stumbled into a type of Scotch Thistle. She just laid each strip of tape firmly over the hairy bits and then pulled it off quickly. Masking tape is the creamy coloured paper tape, the pulling off did not hurt the kid, but got out the prickles.

Sellotape also does it.
I keep 2 lots of tweezers in the greenhouse as well.

I usually have tweezers in my bag. And I'm very sorry, certainly didn't mean to be cruel. Glad they caught the thing.
