Funny Tod. I taped my wife 2 days ago after being told I was snoring. But when my wife snores, contrary to me, the walls dont tremble.

Thanks bixa. August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day and also the date of my vet appointment. It went very smoothly but we'd like to see Livia lose a bit of weight. Funny, I never give her treats and she is a very lucky urban pussycat as we have a "green lane" behind our co-op which of course involves clean-ups and planting foliage, but also severe traffic calming, so children and pets can play safely there. There is a 10km speed limit, which is walking speed.
Extending the greeting to black doggies, so hello Darla! (It doesn't matter if she is greying a bit, we all do, if we are lucky enough to keep our hair).
Other than being a wee bit too plump, she is in perfect health. She is very small so she could easily turn into a little furry ball.

Our dog Papi goes to the vet today. He has been shaking his head relentlessly and despite our cleaning his ears religiously it hasn't let up. He also has a growth on the base of his tail, a basal cell carcinoma that's been deemed benign but needs to be examined again.
P.S. nice to see you Whatagain. I was wondering where you were of late.

My parents had to have their last dog put to sleep because she had skin cancer. Not only was she suffering (scratching), my parents said the odour was unbearable. Of course this was back around 1986. They didn't want to get another pet because they didn't want a dog who would outlive them. I think this was a mistake because everybody knows that old people stay in better health when they are caring for a pet.

The vet should be quickly able to determine what's irritating poor Papi. I wish people everywhere would be as good about pet checkups as you all are. It's the way to catch things before they become big problems.

I am interested to hear what the cause is. And what type of dog Papi is. Papi is a Hound mix. (He was rescued by a family along with his litter mates along the side of the highway in Mississippi. He has a brother that lives a few blocks away that he visits with from time to time) The vet diagnosed him with a yeast and bacterial infection. "Mild debris was noted as well as red, inflamed ear canals. A microscopic evaluation confirms an overgrowth of yeast and bacteria in both ears. He was prescribed Easotic Otic Suspension 10ml. Apply one pump to both ears every 24 hours for 4 days. Massage ear canals after applying". He was also diagnosed with arthritis in his rear legs and lower back. Gabapentin 300mg. capsules (my husband takes the same medicine!!), 1 capsule orally every 12 hours. The fatty tumor at the base of his tail known as a lipoma was confirmed as being benign.

It is lucky that dogs will put up with just about anything their trusted masters want to do to them. I don't think that anybody would be nearly as lucky if they had to work on a cat's ears.
Then again, when you have any sort of pet who trusts you, anything is possible. I often watch a veterinary zoo show, and it is astounding how the hugest beasts can accept strange (and often a bit painful) interventions by the staff, especially when they are hurting.

It seems all will be well very soon. Maybe I should try and get hold of some Gabapentin capsules for my lower back and leg pain. I can't leap out of bed and stand up straight. I have to walk hunched over for the first trip to the loo. Then on the other hand maybe not……they are not tablets to be trifled with.

My husband was prescribed the Gabapentin to help give him some relief from the neuropathy in his hands which is one of the residual maladies from Guillian Barre Syndrome he had in 2016. He reports that it only gives him a teensy bit of relief. The only other medication that works for him is opiates which he wisely wants to avoid. It has to be really bad a flare up for him to take Percocet.

Ha Ha Cheery, don't you remember "For better, or for worse….."? This is the worse part. Jokes aside, I don't think its a crime but even if it is, do you think the complainant would press charges? May even result in a bunch of roses to say "OK, hands up, I'm guilty as hell!"

Our new neighbors have a big black and white kitty boy they call Bob. Bob has begun wandering over to our house lately, evidently having claimed it as part of his territory, since we and Pearl go off to the lake for long periods leaving Pearl’s territory undefended.
At first it was kinda cute, as Bob would lie on our deck and peer through the screen door at Pearl who would lie inside peering back but grumbling and growling. Bob would also jump up on our picnic table to look through the windows for Pearl.
But curiosity has given way to animosity, and yesterday afternoon we heard blood-curdling kitty-shrieks as Bob and Pearl tore into each other on our deck. Fur was flying and Pearl’s breakaway collar was ripped off in the brawl.
We chased Bob off with squirt bottles of water (next time it will be ammonia) and coaxed Pearl out from under the deck to the safety of the house where she licked her wounds and nursed her wounded pride the rest of the evening. Though she got a tiny tear on the edge of one ear, it didn’t bleed much, and we haven’t yet found other wounds. (But with her dense fur any bites might not show up till they become weeping abscesses.)
Glad we are headed to the lake later today. She’ll feel safer there, I’m sure. Meanwhile Mr. Kimby and I are discussing whether to mention this to our new neighbors who we haven’t even properly met due to COVID and the fact that our houses are separated by 300 feet of brush and tall grass. Mr. Kimby feels that since cats are “impossible to control”, what’s the point? I feel that we could gently let them know that there’s been a cat fight, in hopes they might try to keep Bob closer to home, but also in case Bob actually injures Pearl next time and there are vet bills to pay. I wouldn’t want them to feel blindsided by our not having said anything. Thoughts?
BTW, another associated trauma is that when Bob and Pearl are scowling and growling through the screen, she wets herself (and the carpet) in the process...

Probably best to wait for a second cat fight before acting. Then you can find a nice new home for Pearl and you and the neighbours can share Bob.

Kimby - Please Google cat behaviour and territory excursions. You are going to find out that ALL cats roam. They have to, it's in their genes. People have tagged their pet cats and recorded exactly where they roam - at night especially. Your dog will have to man up to the kitty or keep getting attacked. I'm very surprised the cat never took off and won't be back any time soon. Let's hope - but I doubt it. The owners are helpless to stop it roaming unless you want them to lock it up and give it a terrible life. I'm sure you don't.

Tod, Pearl is a kitty. We have had kitties for over 40 years, and know a lot about kitty nature.
Our first cat was an inveterate roamer (and too good of a huntress). Our next pair were strictly indoor kitties and didn’t seem to mind, maybe because they had each other.
Pearl who we inherited when my MiL died has a past we know little about, as we are at least her 4th owners, but it became obvious to us that it involved being outdoors. She was clearly pining to go outside, so we have let her out under fairly close supervision both at home and at the lake cottage. She did wander a bit further afield at first, but now it seems she stays pretty close to home.
Bob’s attack yesterday seems pretty unfair as it happened ON OUR DECK, and if it happens again, we will have to do something if his owners won’t. Ammonia in a spray bottle should dissuade him from coming around. It’s what some joggers use to keep dogs from attacking them, so it probably won’t hurt him.

Please, please don't use ammonia. It could blind or burn kitties. When they go to lick their fur it can poison them. I think vinegar might have some use to break them up but you can't beat a hose blasting water. I think a nice note (? on a kitty card)saying that the 2 cats had had a fight on your deck and neighbour might like to check her cat for injury.
Then every time you catch her cat on your place, hose it until it runs home. You can also use a spray bottle on jet or water pistol. Bob will soon learn that it is not his territory.
PS Is Bob de-sexed? They are more likely to roam and fight if they still have their "bits".

It's interesting and curious that this kerfuffle involves 2 cats of the opposite sex for starters here. Cats are fiercely territorial as we all know. Is "Bob" neutered/spayed? Cats are curious as we all know as well. Bob is on "new turf" so to speak so, this is a trauma of sorts. He is seeking some type of comfort from someone or somewhere. Because the neighbors are strangers to you, you naturally, given the "times" we are in, are uncomfortable socially and at the same time are anxious because your animal has had an altercation with their animal. Animals pick up on our anxieties and other emotions. So, aside from immediately examining Pearl by palpating her body all over (because of her thick coat) and if she winces or appears to be in any physical discomfort anywhere (you will know, trust me) then you need to take her to the vet to be given antibiotics and pain medication. In the meantime, you could perhaps leave your neighbors a note or if you feel comfortable enough a knock on the door and briefly apprise them of the situation. I say all this because, years ago we made the grave error of not taking our male cat "K-Doe" to the vet after an altercation with another cat and he died from an abscess while we were away on vacation and in the care of a friend who knew nothing of his condition until she found him dead. Fast forward to our current cat "Pompeii". He and a neighboring male cat got into it, Pompeii being the younger lightweight and "Kiki" the welter weight. I was home at the time and broke it up. The following morning Pompeii would not let either my husband nor I lift him or rub him etc. There were no visible wounds or scratches. We took him to our vet and she found a dozen puncture wounds on his abdomen. She gave him an antibiotic injection and a shot of morphine. We got stuck with a $200.00 vet bill. You asked...

We had male cat of huge proportions who was often in fights with the stray cats in our bush areas. He always got at least 2 abscesses per fight...cost a fortune. Each scar left a dip in his skin. My kids nick-named him "Golf course" because he had 18 holes...!

Then on the other hand maybe not……they are not tablets to be trifled with. I am reviving this to emphasize that this is a drug that one does not meddle with. It was designed to control convulsions and fits, then doctors started using it for nerve pain. This was "off label" i.e. being used for something that the makers had not intended and the various drug controlling bodies had not OK'd. The side effects could be horrendous from breathing problems to suicide, but it did help with nerve pain. I have been on it for 2-3 years...smaller dose in morning and larger one at night. I still get some pain but if I go off it within a week the pain is unbearable. It is not a drug that works at once, you have to allow for it to build up in your body. *If it is prescribed for you ask Doctor and Pharmacist LOTS of questions. *If is not prescribed for you...leave it alone.

Thank you Questa. When I had my hip replacement they sent me home from the hospital armed with a whole pack of TRAMACET. I hated them. As soon as I could I handed them over to my pharmacist and told him to do with them as he pleased. I don't think it's right flushing pills down the loo. Later when I was up and about I saw one of our customers who was recovering from bowl cancer. He was put on Tramadol and said in made him gaga. Yes, that was how I felt!
Kimby, I hope your cat troubles are resolved amicably with your new neighbour . I adore cats and find them almost human at times. As we have a "cat chaser" dog. we cannot risk introducing a cat into the home. I love it when one of the neighbourhood cats crosses through our property - very fleetingly as it is sure to see a small brown musclebound creature tearing in it's direction!

Dear Any-Porters, It’s been brought to my attention that I’ve neglected to acknowledge each response to my request for advice regarding the neighbor’s cat attacking Pearl on our deck. I apologize to any and all who feel I’ve been derelict in my responsibilities as a forum participant. Please forgive me my unintentional rudeness.
I did read all the responses, and have included the useful ideas in my thinking on how to go from here. We will trade the water bottle for a full-pressure garden hose instead of ammonia. We will, however, wait till next time to bring it up to the neighbors, since we really don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with them.
As Pearl has almost no teeth, it’s very unlikely that she has inflicted any harm on Bob, but I rather liked the (only slightly passive-aggressive) response suggested to inquire after the welfare of Bob as a way of getting the point across.
We have decamped to the lake where there are no neighbor cats to worry about, so won’t have any news on the issue for awhile.
I’ll try to post about any progress or setbacks as this story unfolds. Love, Kimby

Livia has been very good every time I take her to the vet's. Renzo was a little more difficult as he was very shy (abused as a kitten) but he never attempted to bite or claw anyone. Fortunately now we are allowed in the examining room so I can hold and touch Livia during the exam.

Cheery - Bixa I'm sure will help you. Not really ~ Bixa is pretty much the last person to be able to help with phone anything. ALSO, Bixa would desperately like to see tech questions/tips/reports, etc. either put into the Tech support and advice threads, a sticky thread that is permanently fixed at the top of Free Trade Zone. This way, people facing the same or similar problems might have a fighting chance of finding the discussion resolving the issue. Accordingly, I'm moving this phone/tech coversation into that thread. (Edited to add that the picture of your sister is absolutely lovely, Kimby -- what a sweet, intelligent, humorous face!)
