Edited to add that the picture of your sister is absolutely lovely, Kimby -- what a sweet, intelligent, humorous face! Bixa, your assessment of my sister is spot-on.

I could not possibly directly post under this nice - and living - picture to describe my oet peeve. We came back from France today. Put the wine, luggage, dog and 5 cats in the car. Crowded. Plus a box for tbe cats to use as a toilet. Then it stinks. We check the box. Nada. Eliminating wine and luggage, we decide to pull over and check. The cat that was on my wife's knees iz ghe culprit. The object of the crime sticking partly to its hair, partly on my wife's dress. Lovely. 🤢🤮🤢🤮

Cats are famous for showing if the arrangements made for them are not suitable.

Last night I had a terrible time going to sleep. The news of the day is just getting to be so awful and it’s hard to stomach all of it. I found myself watching an old baking show as a distraction and dozed off, only to be roused, in the middle of the night, by a noisy cricket hidden somewhere in my bedroom. So then, not being able to go back to sleep, I opened my iPad to YouTube and clicked on Kerouac’s Pompeii video. It seemed fitting to see Vesuvius erupting over and over again. We sure are living through some crazy times.

So true, Htmb! I find it's a fine line between being a realistic, informed person and becoming completely demoralized by the news.

Crazy night at my house. I was almost asleep when a loud explosion shook my building (well, it felt like it anyway). I grabbed my cell and ran downstairs. I could see flashing white lights reflecting in the windows of the building across the courtyard so, rather than try to find my shoes, I flew out the front door. I was concerned my building was on fire. In the back of my mind I assumed it was a transformer, but there was seemingly no reason for one to blow. So, about 100 yards from me the sky was lit up with flashing, crackling, etc. Lights shooting high up into the air. There were too many trees blocking the way but I didn’t think there were any flames. It all seemed to be coming from an electrical pole. I called the emergency number and reported it and, eventually the power to the pole cut off and firefighters arrived. So, now I’m thinking I’ll soon lose power at my house so I’d better go grab a flashlight, as well as my shoes. I head back towards my front door and there is a fu&king snake creeping across my front door, about level with the door handle.
Since I only had my reading glasses, and it was pretty dark, I couldn’t tell what kind it was. It looked a lot like a coral snake (deadly venomous but not aggressive), but I think it must have been some sort of a non-venomous snake. It was a mean, active little sucker, so I look a couple of pictures of it and then went to break into my garage door while I still had power.
Clearly, I still have power now. And of course I’m wide awake, even though I took some allergy medication a couple of hours ago that usually makes me sleepy.

That's not a petty personal trauma -- that's about two thirds of an action/horror movie!
Have a nice glass of milk with a half shot of rum in it.

Coming across a snake unexpectedly is not a pleasant experience except for those crazy wildlife explorers !
When we visited my parents on the farm we would always clap our hands loudly as we walked along narrow footpaths in the grass. This simple measure alerted any snakes to slither away from the sound. The only snake that would not move would be the deadly Puffadder. Hence we wore gumboots (galoshes) in the event of treading on one. I have numerous Red-Lipped Herald snakes in our garden. They like the holes in the garden walls and once or twice they are found under a pile of wood etc. Not completely harmless but if one sustains a bite, an adult might get a severe headache and children may feel unwell, but there is no need to panic. It is a grey/brown colour with a red stripe on either side of its head near the mouth.

Well done btw, seems you made all the right moves.

I spent my entire childhood on snake alert. Snakes in the garage, snakes in the mailbox, snakes on the welcome mat... I can still hear the immortal words of my mother whenever my brother and I would go outside. "Take a stick!"

We have a snake that's indigenous to here. The Louisiana Brown Marsh snake. We see them in the garden and on some occasions have seen remnants of them that one of the cats brought in as an offering. They are completely harmless. I encountered a clutch of their eggs once, they look like little white tic tac breathe mints.

Thanks for the commiserations everyone. All seems to be back to normal this morning, though I’m certainly feeling sleep deprived. No fires; power is on; snakes are in hiding. The only thing I probably should have done differently was grab a pair of shoes on my way out the door. And, like many of you, this wasn’t my first encounter with a snake. I’m guessing it won’t be my last.
Bjd, if the alligators ever get close enough to pay a visit to my front door, I’ll take it as a sign it’s time to move!

So today I had an occurrence that can't be called a trauma, but was definitely unexpected. I ordered two patio dog beds from Amazon Mexico which were to be shipped from the US. These are like loungers for humans, made from that same thick mesh that covered good outdoor furniture. I ordered a medium, which is plenty big enough for any two of my dogs, and a small. The product description says that the larger of the two weighs 2.79 kilos. I think that must be shipping weight, as these things don't weigh very much, consisting as they do of hollow tubular legs and a flat piece of mesh. Both were delivered today. Here is a picture before I proceed with my story: The Amazon delivery guy showed up today and handed me a flat lightweight box, saying "Wait -- there's one more." Then he returns from the back of the truck with a large, not flat box which he offered to bring in for me, saying it was quite heavy, which it was. I brought them to the porch and opened the smaller one, which was the manufacturer's box inside the Amazon box. Then I opened the larger box and discovered that I had been sent six (6) medium size dog loungers!

Now you need to find the extra dogs.

oh my htmb! If you are not sending some back, you will have patio day beds outside, inside and never have to drag any around to a different location (like I used to do with the cushioned beds, I finally had 3, one for each floor). Charmed lives! They so deserve it.
I have no experience with Amazon returns, but whenever my friends have had to return items from Wayfair or Joss & Main, they always put them on hold and come back saying you can dispose of them however you like. Hope that happens for you if you can find spots for them!

Bite your tongue, Kerouac!
Mich, that was always my experience with this kind of thing with US companies. These beds started their journey to me from wherever the manufacturer is, went from there to Illinois, thence to two different places in Texas, then to a couple of places in northern Mexico, before getting to Tlaxcala and from there to me.
The box the six beds were in was not an Amazon box and was obviously made to fit six of those beds in their boxes. It appears that someone in the manufacturer's warehouse wasn't paying attention and filled the order with a case of the things instead of just one. Accordingly, I think I'm going to contact Amazon US in the hope that they'll tell me just to forget about it.
I don't want to keep them for myself, as they take up a good deal of space. That was the reason for ordering a medium and a small -- they'll replace the crummy medium and small mats the dogs currently use to lounge on the patio. However, their overall dimensions are bigger and of course I can't step on them if need be, like I could with the mats.

Sorry Bixa! I do not know how I confused your post being htmb. Not myself of late.
Do you have a animal shelter that you could donate the extras to if they tell you to keep them?

That's a lovely idea, Mich! There is no official shelter, but there are several groups and people taking care of homeless animals.
The two people I told about this have both expressed interest, although one of them has a cat & I feel she is not envisioning the lounger correctly.
I have to say that the most frustrating thing about this so far is that only one of my ungrateful little curs has taken to the loungers so far, and that's probably because I praised him for getting on it.

Ha Ha! Put one of their blankets on it and they might be up there quickly.

I'll try that, Mich. They are really attached to the old icky mats and were already sulkng because those got rained on last night, so weren't available to them this morning. That of course is why I got the fancy new beds, but do they appreciate that? No!

Bixa you probably know this already but if you want a pet to take to something new, try putting their "smell" on the new item. Maybe a blanket or similar. We sell an awful lot of pet blankets - my little madam loves ripping most of the blanket into something she can make her nest more cuddly in her doghouse outside. She much preferred being outdoors but in winter she loves her snug doggie cushion inside.

I should be on a flight right now to Vienna. But now I also feel guilty for feeling sad about it, I should concentrate on being grateful that we are healthy. I am thankful that at least we have a lifetime credit for the full amount from Air Canada.
