Ugh! Not a pleasant way to wake up, whatagain!
My issue is one I”ll just have to live with. This morning I found out the overly annoying press secretary for the ugly orange thug and I were both educated at the same school, though obviously many years apart. I spent my first four years there while she was apparently in school for grades 1 - 12. The nuns must have softened up over the years. The ones who taught me wouldn’t have put up with her prissy, spoiled brat ways.

Oh my gawd! I can't believe you and Muck-Inane are from the same planet, much less went to the same school. If it makes you feel any better, I found out recently that I have the same birthday as Mark Meadows, although I'm eleven years older and a million times more human than he. He was born in Verdun. Maybe it's the fault of the French?

Crikey htmb ... but love the phrase " ugly orange thug"
My current petty personal trauma originated several centuries ago - fecking Guy Fawkes - my poor Dora is terrified . On a positive note both Zeb and my horses are really not bothered by the firework invasion into their evenings.

Django is bouncing off the walls and ceiling in terror. Same as every year. We've put Classic fm on the radio...the lovely Bill Turnbull is playing soothing music to calm stressed pets. In between bouts of barking, howling, dribbling, shaking and sweating Django is sitting still and listening to the music. The show is called Pet Sounds and is on 7pm - 9pm on Saturday too. We are all very tired and emotional....at least its Jeff's turn to sit up with the dog tonight...we find that if one of us stays downstairs with the TV on we can keep the dog relatively calm until the bangs, pops, whizzes and fizzles stop...usually around midnight. Here in Leicester there have been fireworks going off for a few nights already...Diwali, Halloween, Bonfire night etc...I bloody hate the flipping things.

We are lucky insofar as our dog is a bit deaf now but wasn’t that bothered before.
But if I go back a dog or two to Oscar, our Yorkie, he was terrified and would hide in a cupboard.

Oz is gradually moving away from fireworks and having brilliant laser displays instead. Less noise and pollution, fire risks and upset animals.

We have absolutely no Guy Fawkes celebrations here…..Long forgotten in the 70's I think. BUT, I am sad to hear you do not medicate your dogs Cheery! All animals that cringe and are scared out of their wits need the vet to give you about 20 tablets (so you have them on hand for next time), to calm the animal. And PLEASE don't give them the tablets that dope them up but do nothing to calm them. There are pills that are very suitable from your local vet. Please try them.

Benadryl (Diphenhydramine HCL) works well and is approved by our vet. It can be bought over the counter here and comes in a generic brand that is very inexpensive. It's an antihistamine that has a sedative effect and doesn't really dope them up.

My vet advised Benadryl as well and my pharmacist worked out the dosage for me.(The vet had given me dosages but I wanted to double check) It is also good if your pet is having allergic reactions to things...skin itch, bee stings etc,

My hands are full of small cuts gotten whilst sawing, felling and crushing trees.

I can sympathise Whatagain as Im sure you find it easier to handle the foliage without garden gloves. Don't get infected now in those cuts.

I wear gloves most of the time but must - or think i must - to clean and disengorge the crusher. That is when i get most cuts, esp because i crushed palm trees, that have the habit of rolling themselves along the axis, between the knives. Grrr.

In 2021, Spéculoos is disappearing from grocery shelves! It is being rebranded Biscoff for worldwide distribution. This abominable name is a contraction of biscuit and coffee.
As a small consolation to the original marketing zone, the name Spéculoos will continue to appear in smaller print on the packages in Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

It was allover social media in Belgium. Speculoos will be used by smaller brands. Biscoff is something i am boycotting from now on.

Btw there is no ė in speculoos, as it is clearly a flemish name.
Apparently the name (and origin) is speculaas in Nl, but we made a much better version with less spices called speculoos.
According to wiki, the name comes from latin. According to wiki again, belgian version was invented because we could not afford the spuces, much more expensive in belgium then.
Fake news !!! We made the stuff great again from something meh, as all the things coming from Dutchland.

I found out that the drawer imps also work on shelves. I have long known that if I can't find something in a drawer when I am absolutely sure that it is there, it will magically appear on the 5th complete search. This time was a bit more complicated because I was looking for a DVD that I knew I had. I have 12 wooden cubes that serve as shelves for my DVDs. There are between 12 and 30 DVDs in each cube (double rows, DVDs piled on top of each other...). I searched each and every cube one time, two times, three times... etc. The DVD was nowhere to be found, even though I took the DVDs off the shelves to see what was in back. I even checked Amazon to see exactly what the DVD box looked like. I finally gave up yesterday after four searches. This morning I checked again, often crawling on my hands and knees to see them as close as possible (the cubes being on the floor) and even using an electric torch. As my fifth search came to an end, in the very last cube I found my DVD as though it had always been there. Damn those imps!

Oh, Kerouac, You forgot about the time factor. All inanimate things have an ability to enter and leave this current time zone and warp to another zone if the conditions are right.Your DVD was there all the time but you could not detect it with your 5 senses. Can you understand that time is not linear but everything is in the zone of NOW and your DVD's existence had just slipped a couple of zones. This is well shown by the deja vu phenomenon.
Enjoy your DVD !

Tod, obvious question - do you have a surge protector plug that your computer plugs in to? I always had them, especially in Zambia, but in other countries as well. Not sure how effective they really are but better that than nothing.

Mark, I always believed there was a plug on there that helped with these electrical surges but I would have to ask my son what exactly happened to my old Apple computers working parts.

I was looking forward to filling and heating up the hot tub for another winter of long starlit soaks, but apparently I jammed the hose into the filter compartment too aggressively and broke off the “thermowell” which contains the probes for the thermostat and the “high limit breaker” (it prevents overheating and burning up the components).
It’s a Saturday, so not likely to get fixed for awhile, but I was able to talk to the spa technician on call who said that due to the age of the spa and the fact that the part I broke was only used for a few years in the late 80’s/early 90’s, he doesn’t know if he can get the part, but he’s looking for one.
Grrr. I was looking forward to a soak tomorrow night. Now I’ll have to wait for a warm spell to even fill the spa.
And, to prevent freezing, I had to sponge out all the water that I had run into the spa before noticing the broken part...

I had an adventurous day on Thursday. Back in November I baked 2 small Christmas cakes using a recipe I found in the newspaper. One to eat then and one to keep for the festival. Well they were so nice that they both got eaten quite rapidly. Then the chaps were saying how much they loved the cakes and Jeff said he'd like me to make another...they both promised to leave it be at least until I got the marzipan and icing on! So I duly soaked the fruit for 3 days in brandy and made the cake mix...lined the tin carefully and filled the tin. In order to prevent burning it's necessary to place a piece of greaseproof paper on top...so the oven couldn't be on fan (the paper would be blown off)... I always use fan on my Neff so I'm not used to putting it on the ordinary setting...tbh I only use fan or grill...so I'm not absolutely sure of the symbols. But I set the oven and popped in the cake, set the timer for 4 1/2 hours and sat with a coffee. Russell came into the kitchen and said "Why are you grilling the cake?" I quickly turned the knob to the oven setting and prayed. So my cake should have been cooked at 120°C fan for 4 1/2 hours was actually grilled for 20 minutes then cooked at 140°C in an 'ordinary' oven for 4 hours 10 minutes...it seems ok....
