I paid the ransom for my sick computer, and it seems to be working just fine. But as is always the case when they transfer things from an old hard drive to a new one, all sorts of things disappear. Most of them are just hiding and can be coaxed into their old places, but not all of them. I decided to leave it alone until tomorrow since it wouldn't even let me click and drag certain essentials back to the main screen and I was on the verge of a "new computer nervous breakdown."
And my video tool is lost forever, apparently. It was discontinued in 2017 and there seems to be no way to upload the old version. I'll hunt for a new free tool when my nerves have settled.
At least a few things were simple, after years of experience. Connecting the wifi code again and enabling the bluetooth on the printer seemed to be a snap this time. (Of course we all know that these things are ultra simple, but it is impossible to forget how difficult some of this seemed the first time.)

I'm glad that you've been reunited with your trusty computer Kerouac. I'm still scared of my new one...

I bought a computer for my sons to share when they were still in primary school. It was (wait for it) a Commodore 64! They hogged it playing games and I never got a chance to use it...I lie...I was too scared to break something or set fire to the house. I was forever asking if they would teach me how to use it but nothing seemed to stick in my brain apart from shopping lists and informal letters.
My work had decided to use computers and we had 3 cumbersome models installed for 17 staff members to use. Again my timidity meant that while my colleagues were becoming adept and buying mobile versions I was constantly forgetting how to do things and having to ask for help.
In the Nineties I started travelling again and discovered that wonderful place...the internet cafe. There were always nice young men eager to explain what I was doing wrong and they spoke without the jargon that causes my difficulties.
Here I have a brilliant intuitive tech man who services my computer and fixes all the injuries I have caused. He said once that if he was to make a program that would do the maximum damage and be almost undetectable, it would look very much like what I give him to unravel. The only time I use a computer now is to post here. Once I knew how to post photos but I have lost the knack and can't understand the Jargonese instructions.
Maybe I could get by with a little help from my friends here?

I'm afraid that I can't help you Questa. I can beat the Commadore ...we had a Sinclair cant remember the number but I remember the noises it made. The college that i went to in the 80s had a clunkyy BBC computer that was wheeled around on a massive trolley but I avoided it. The youngsters in my class were all over it tho. When I started working as a trainee at the hospital in 1989 everything was on the hospital computer system. I remember that every friday afternoon they were stopped whilst the system was backed up. The heat coming out of the computer room was scary...one of the seniors would have to go in there and change the massive disks/reels whatever.. Invariably an emergency (or three) would come into A&E and it would be back to manual techniques as all the analysers would only work if they were plugged into the computer system.

Being a somewhat nervous internet user I am scrupulous about updates and virus scans etc. I do prefer Microsoft Defender but the darned laptop has come with a '30 day trial' of McAfee, the damned thing keeps turning off the Microsoft defender and firewall...so every time I turn the new laptop on I have to turn it on again. I will probably uninstall the McAfee a couple of days before the trial date is up...but it is a complete pain.

Cheery, delete it as soon as you can. You will also find it is very difficult to completely delete it from your computer. It's now got quite a bad name and is very invasive.

Most anti-virus or anti-malware apps are, rather ironically, essentially malware themselves. Windows Defender is all you should need as a normal person on a PC. Avoid/uninstall them at all costs.

Avira was harrassing me for quite some time, telling me how badly I needed an upgrade, but now they have shut up.

You will also find it is very difficult to completely delete it from your computer. You may have to use the McaFee Consumer Products Removal tool if it is that you are having problems with.

Well done. If there's no reference of any sort to McAfee in your programmes/apps list it's probably gone then.

We can no longer get a doctor's appointment at our GP surgery over the telephone. We have to download the NHS app, answer a ton of questions, provide photo ID etc and then try getting an appointment online ONLY after answering a lot of questions...and even then you are not guaranteed an appointment, you're just as likely to be told to try again the next day, ring 111 or (in an emergency) go to A&E.
I want an appointment. I thought that I'd prepare by registering on the app this evening. Two and a half hours later...I've given up.

My doctor gives almost no appointments, just one a day from what I can determine. Everybody else just goes to the waiting room to wait their turn. But like most doctors, she doesn't count her hours. On days when the morning session is just 10 to 12, there are often at least 10 people still waiting at the approach of noon, and she doesn't turn anyone away who is already there. She just tells the people to inform anybody else showing up that they'll have to come back for the afternoon session or another day. The waiting room opens directly onto the street, so anybody can walk in. My previous doctor was upstairs, so he had to buzz people in through the security door... or not. He did not take appointments either, but he did make house calls.

The doctor we went to before we moved started off with the system of people just waiting but after a while he switched to appointments. He said because he couldn't know how long someone would be, others would sit in the waiting room for hours and he thought that wasn't a good system. Some people had complained about the time they spent waiting so he posted his tax return on the wall of the waiting room to show how much he earned for the long hours he was putting in.
Here, when we arrived I asked around to find out which doctor had a good reputation and I also wanted a woman. But when I would go past waiting rooms that were visible, there were always such crowds. The guy I finally went to, told me I was the last patient he was taking -- that was at the end of 2019. Now they have built a medical centre where several doctors have an office. You still choose who to go to but it seems better organized. You can make online appointments too.
The problem with being in a small town is that there are no specialists. Loads of physiotherapists and osteopaths, midwives, etc for some reason.

My wife only works with appointments. And accept emergencies. Which kill her schedule and make some people angry. Till the day they need urgent care.
I don’t know about generalists. Been years.

We are appointment only which can either be face to face or phone. You have no choice of doctor if you ring but you can choose online provided they are available.
You have to convince the receptionist though that you are worthy of a doctor’s attention.

The British system sounds terrible. Mick, at least you know how to use a computer or cell phone. What about really old people or those who have no digital access?
Here you can actually go to any GP if you need to, while you are away from home for example. But since we have to be registered with a specific GP for social security purposes, you only get reimbursed if you go to that one. But if you need a doctor while you are away, 26€50 is not a high price to pay.
