Is it possible to miss someone that you've never met, never heard their voice, essentially...were almost unaware of their existence? Yes, it is. I miss Amy Winehouse very much, her beautiful voice and what could have been... When Amy died tragically and unexpectedly at the age of 27, I had heard of her, but somehow thought she was an actress and lumped her in with people such as Brittany Spears. By accident, I then heard her voice, in a song that will probably become an anthem in music history, Rehab...fabulous! I listened to more of her work and loved this one, Body and Soul, a duet with Tony Bennett (85 years old!). If you close your eyes, she sounds like Dinah Washington...eyes open, they resonate remarkably and look and sound so good together! A great loss.

Lovely tribute, Jazz.
I was a fan of hers and really found it painful to watch her downward spiral -- painful to the point that I avoided news stories about her problems or the cruel videos gloating over her screw-ups.
Foreverman and I both posted favorites by Amy in the Musical Necrology thread, but I never saw that duet one before -- a real treat. I just love the way she looks at him.

I'm like you Jazz - never really was into the Amy Winehouse thing. When I first heard her name I thought the Winehouse part was a concocted stage name to draw attention to her mad ways. Never thought of a Jewish connection..... To me she was another 'Rebel Without a Cause' - with dashing looks and the dashing voice. Very very tragic that no-one could save her from herself.

Quite a few members of 'Club 27' lived their lives like runaway trains... Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain... and Amy Winehouse were all so predictable.
What's amazing are the runaway trains that managed not to derail, god knows how... Lou Reed, Keith Richards... It's a miracle that some of these people are still alive.

Thanks, Jazz. I'd heard they recorded that. It's great, isn't it?
She had a presence on camera, too.
I think I first heard her here. (I WOULD say it was a song K posted, but then he'd contradict that and then I'd have to go look it up and apologize.)

Me? A contradictory person? I'm sorry, but I have to contradict that!

Yes, Bixa, I also love the way that Amy looked at Tony Bennett. I read about this taping and she was thrilled and very, very nervous to be honored to sing with the Tony Bennett. He is, I feel, incredible. To have the voice, the looks, the sensuality... at 85 years old. He is forever young and has a perfect ability to chose much younger singers to invite to perform with him. K.D. Lang is another example.
Well, unfortunately, I'm too often the personification of ignorance and pre-judgement. I had never heard Amy Winehouse sing a note until after she had died. I cynically thought of her name (Winehouse)...how appropriate. My loss. In the explosion of media reporting soon after, I often heard the soundbyte...'The 27 club'...that she had joined Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix (all of whom I loved).
But, as I read much more about her, she had apparently been off drugs for 2 years and off alcohol for about 3 weeks. The tragedy seems to be that she didn't understand that she needed help and supervision in the Extremely Abrupt withdrawal phase and that is what caused her death.
In the past, I spent 6 weeks in Rehab, (for me, alcohol, but it was also for drug abuse), in one of the top ten American centres. It was extremely strict and high lock-down. My time there saved my life and changed me forever.

Bixa, this duet was her last recording and it was released posthumously. The money will go towards the foundation Amy's dad has created. www.amywinehousefoundation.co.uk/

Just been watching a programme on the making of Back to Black. It was all about her sad life - the music was almost incidental. What an outstanding talent.

I'll see if I can find that. What is it called?
Mick, have you seen the movie Amy yet? Very, very well done.

Tottenham or Arsenal supporter?
Unfortunately, often we can't view BBC videos here, though CBC often airs them.
