I was trying to remember if I had gone up to the top of the television tower, but now that I have seen the photos, I am certain that I did not. However, I still have a number of excellent notebooks from the department store that was on the square there, as well as a full sized East German flag which still decorates the inside of my walk-in closet.

A bit back: One of several sculptures sitting on a wall opposite the museum island and Berliner Dom. This one seems to be looking at the Dom...

These pink pipes are in different parts of Berlin, sometimes about two meters above ground, sometimes on the ground. Not sure what they are - maybe for pumping water or waste water? or heating?

If you imagine a Russian city full of these pipes they always seem to have some places where steam is escaping from them. When I first went to Berlin I noticed them and they struck me as being the same as the steam heating pipes.
rikita, with your knowledge of Berlin are these pipes normally found in what was the eastern side, or also in the west? Also, can you think of any place that was in the old west that had them? Conversely what about in the old east Germany? I went to Frankfurt Oder once and I vaguely remember maybe I saw some there as well.

The East Side Gallery is a piece of wall that in spring 1990 was painted by 118 artists, from 21 countries. With a length of 1316 meters it is the longest permanent open air galery i nthe world. In about 100 paintings, the artists are commenting the political changes of the time of the fall of the wall. The paintings are on the side facign east, west of the stretch of wall is the Spree river.

I see it has been changed again since June 2010. Many of the paintings I saw in 2008 had been painted over to renovate the wall for the 20th anniversary in 2009. I thought many of the newer ones weren't as interesting. This section here is better than in 2010.

I didn't realize that there was such a big section of the wall still standing.

Not really sure when exactly and how often they redid it - i think they do it in portions... What I must admit annoys me a bit, is the tendency of people to write their name on it. Soon after redoing it, any white spot will be covered in lots of short text saying "I was here" or similar things...

Near the East Side Gallery is Oberbaumbrücke, a bridge across the Spree river connecting Friedrichshain in East Berlin and Kreuzberg in West Berlin. It was built in the end of the 19th century in neogothic style but destroyed in part by the Nazis in 1945. It was at first repaired only partly, and from 1961 couldn't be crossed anymore as the wall was built. After Germany's reunification it was reconstructed.

Bravo, this is a beautifully lit photo! I also love the vibrant colors and swirls of the East Side Gallery. All of these photos are dynamite, though. A visit to Berlin is looking better and better.

Always a treat to return to this thread, Rikita. I love the timelessness of the statue. The pink pipe with the dandelions is wonderful, of course, and the bridge is a beautiful picture, besides being interesting. Was it originally for vehicles?
The section of the wall shown is all one style, so must be one artist. Do the styles change radically from section to section, or sort of fade one into another? Yes, infuriating that people would deface art.

nycgirl - if you want, i can show you around a bit when you visit berlin! i love showing people my city...
bixa - yeah, some of them are "smaller" pictures (just a few metres wide), others are a longer section... the styles are quite different... - as for the bridge, i am not sure - but it is quite wide, with a big street and then this covered walking way in the middle, so i suppose it was built for both pedestrians and cars, though it could be that only the covered pedestrian way is part of the original bridge, i am not sure...

I know it's not on the subject, Rikita, but I always feel that I learn something about photography when looking at your pictures. Once I get past "wow, I really like that", I try to analyze why they're so good & generally get some insight into how to make photos better, more interesting, etc. Thanks!

I don't know that your pictures really "show" Berlin to someone who doesn't know the city, but they certainly are very good photographs. The photo just above is a perfect example.
