Breakfast at our B&B. A very nice one. Basically we had a house for ourselves. 3 sleepingroons, one bathroom, but nice, kitchen, etc etc. Only drawback was that we had to climb a stairs of 13 steps and our dog hates steps. So carrying her up and down... We took our time and went to visit Ribeauvillee, then Colmar, then ? Back 'home' we spent 45 min to fi d a gastronomic restaurant whilst i refrained to tell my wife such places would go bankrupt if they had still available tables 1 hour before opening. So after she said we would find nothjng, i logged on TA and found a nuce restaurant 5 min walking distance. Which turned out to be quite good. I had for entree (starter) girolles and then a faux fillet woth delucious vegetable and puree de potimarrons. The ones who had dessert were disappointed but this was the only fausse note. I asked for an irish coffee and got a rum. We had a nice evenj g, calmer than thd day before... We had so much laughter then that when othe patrons (which actually means owners in french, passons) left i said ' i hope we were not too noisy' to what the guy answered a curt 'si' (yes) without looking at me nor elaborating. There should be laws to firbid laughter in restaurNts. Only boring people allowed.

On sunday, we took our time with breakfast... We were scheduled at 9 am and my wife woke me up at... 9. When i was sleeping like a log. Loading the car, checking we left nothing behind, then en route to castle of haut Koenigsbourg. Built between 12th century to XVI mostly, then fell into ruins, but rebuilt by Kaiser Whilhelm 2 (Guillaume in French), from 1909 (Alsace was German since the war of 1870 wanted by Bismarck) to ... 1919, then confiscated by the frenchs who had just won WW1. Very nice,in a superb area, hilly, full of trees all with superb autumnal colours. A few kms from there we went to the montagne des singes, where 240 macaques de barbarie - small monkeys from North Africa have had their quarters established. Tbey are free to roam in a somehow spacious park and it was very nice. It was our third visit, but first for Marie. Driven by hunger by then we went to neighbourhood Kaysersberg, another beautiful not so small village, where we had our second Flamekuech (sp ?) A kind of pizza, but with a very thin pasta and all have cheese and no pineapple please. Then some more visiting and spending a fortune for some glasses of wine that we didn't need but are real nice. It was then time to go back home. 4 h 30 of uneventful driving to reach home. To further deplete our wallet we bought frites and hamburgers from a new neighbouring friterie that my wife had not yet tested. Quite a nice trip. I posted sone pics on FB, i am too lazy to go through the process of posting here.

Your trip sounds so lovely Whatagain. I remember our day trip from Metz via Colmar to Eguisheim to taste he lovely Riesling. I think it was Jaeffelin? So gorgeous. In Afrikaans there is a saying "Net soos 'n engel se Pi-pi op die tong". Yes, just like Angels pee on your tongue!

We rang my grandson at university around 9 pm last night a couple of times but got no reply. I was worried and texted to ask if he was ok and he replied after I went to bed that he was fine.
I spoke with him today and he explained that he had a long morning so had his main sleep during the day and was asleep when we rang. He then awoke and worked until 3am then had a “nap” until 9 am. Apparently this is how he works best.
Alien to me...

Against my better judgement, I allowed myself to be filmed this morning by a television news crew that found it odd that cinemas that now open at 8 am in Paris still have customers. However, I declined to be interviwed so I'm sure they found some other victim to use.
(Frankly, I almost didn't arrive on time, which would indicate that even someone like me finds that a bit early in the day.)

Not too late to sow?

Mick, never! We are just moving out of spring so I think we might get lucky. So as to give each precious seed a chance we are sowing in two different mediums. Fine well aged and sifted compost and another tray with seedling mix. Thank you ever so much - fingers crossed!
Seeing yours got through I'm posting off the Dutchman's Pipe seeds on Monday.

Seven Nigerian/Liberian stowaways 'hijack' an oil tanker as it approaches Southampton. They wish to seek asylum in the UK. The crew lock themselves in their safe room and call for help. They are now in range of the SBS, the Naval equivalent of the SAS, who rope in from helicopters in the middle of the night and secure the ship. It took them nine minutes. The seven are now in custody and presumably can begin their application for asylum after serving their prison sentences, which I doubt will be for more than a few years.
It seems their plan, though risky, worked.

Yes, I watched it on SKY News this morning. The security on board and in port must have been lax for more than one person to get on board without being detected…..and then bring food supplies with them. Then hiding in a place which must have been a real shithole by the time the take-over bid happened. There is a little niggle in the back of my mind that says 'Inside Job".

Daughter’s Beagle became very ill literally overnight. He was his normal self yesterday but this morning wouldn’t eat, was bringing up bile and then couldn’t walk. He is now with vet for blood test and being kept in. They say it’s either kidneys or cancer. We so hope it’s the former which should be treatable. It will be very strange without him.

Just coming up to 10 which isn’t old for a Beagle.
The news from the vet isn’t good. He’s on a drip and we’ll know what to do tomorrow.

When it happens, it often happens so fast -- that makes it all the more shocking.

Oh Mick, I hope it is something treatable and he is feeling better soon.
Two of our darling pups passed due to cancers, I hope this is not the case. They are such a big part of our lives, a wonderful and joyful part. Hugs to you and your family.

Sorry about the doggie Mick. When I read your first sentence it reminded me of my brother's dog behaving the same way but in his case the dog had swallowed the baby's dummy( (pacifier) and it had lodged in the gut causing a blockage. Sometimes dog bones can also cause this. I hope your Beagle makes a full recovery. They are really cute dogs.

I am glad the little guy is home, Mick, but extremely sorry to hear that the vet can't make him better. Is the vet the regular one your daughter uses?

Yes he is and very good too. They could open him up but no guarantee that they could do anything or that he would survive the op. He is barely eating, drinking or walking.
