The good the bad and the ugly is translated in french as le bon la brute et le mechant. It kills me to say this, but the phrase may be even better in French than in English.

I finally walked into an optician today, only 54 weeks after getting my presciption (they are valid for 3 years). I didn't see anything of interest. I'll go to another one soon.

My husband seen his optometrist yesterday and has a new prescription. He tried on many frames and it has come down to five so they packed them up and sent him home with them for the weekend to consider them.

One of the big optical chains in France now has vans that do housecalls for the elderly and/or disabled, with all of their display trays.

Yes, very good service. They even provided a convenient carrying case for them that keeps them separated, to prevent damage I assume.
Kerouac it is wonderful to hear that they have the van service for the elderly or disabled, that would be of help for so many people. We had a dental hygienist that came to our home for a couple of years after my brain injury. My husband helped her bring all her equipment down, but we were both so grateful for the home service that I needed at the time.

I am not to be trusted with fancy expensive optics. I tend to drop them, or place them somewhere where I end up sitting on them.
So I go to the speedy discount place, Eyemart Express, pick out from the wall a couple of frames that I think look OK, and within a couple hours, have two new pairs of glasses for under $100, maybe way under $100. The base price for 2 pairs of specs with no fancy coatings is $38, and 2 pairs of progressives is $78.
I would never pay big bucks for glasses, because the way I go through them, they’re practically disposable for me. I dove off a boat with my driving glasses on, and lost them in 75-foot-deep water last summer.

I get all the bells and whistles. Varifocals, reactolight coated...and usually I get 2 pairs. Next time I think I'll just get one pair because I invariably have a favourite pair and never bother with the spares. Jeff got 2 pairs the same so he has indoors glasses and workshop glasses...he's always losing them around the house. I only take mine off in the shower or in bed My eyesight is deteriorating with age, the sight in my left eye is really blurry (a consequence of a bad case of measles when I was 5) and can't be corrected but the other eye responds well to glasses thank goodness.

Being married to an Ophtalmo, opticians make special rebates for our glasses. 50 pc on the frame glasses for free. Yet I hardly buy any.

The Phalanx system aka last line of defence has been tested on a US warship against a Houthi missile. It worked. The principle is simple : you saturate the sky in the direction of the incoming missile with 20mm bullets and hope one will hit. It did. Phalanx fires 4500 rounds per minute. By comparison the MG42 of ww2 fired about 1000 rounds per min. Phalanx uses rotating guns like in the first machine gun the US Gatling.

So I just watched the first episode of Friends, as it's been so long that it all seems new. Anyway, closed captions were on and I forgot to turn them off. At nighttime in the episoe the tv station is getting ready to go off the air and is playing the national anthem. The captions flash: "Playing Francis Scott Key's The Star Spangled Banner".

I tried watching friends but it was really US typed and the dubbing was awful. It was before Netflix so I may want to see it in American. Maybe later.

I was polled again today.
Question #1 - Should a police officer be posted at the entrance to every school? Question #2 - On a scale from 0 to 10, are you in favour of immigration in France?

Thank you monetsmum I will look into it We are changing our internet provider at last! Citynet laid high speed fibre cables here years ago, but our provider doesn't plan to use them (they're still using copper wires). Anyway, our contract finishes this month and we have signed up with Giganet. It's all happening at the end of the month, the only downside being that we can't keep our landline number because our old provider (sky) say that they can't release it in the specified time. We've had that number for 40 years! way before we signed up with sky for the internet. My nephew says that sky are being difficult on purpose, they've had plenty of notice that we aren't renewing their contract. We were going to fight it but just can't be arsed...so we will probably just have a new number with Giganet (altho they are trying to get our old one for us).

everyone on boarding the two machines is safe ! Whew! I almost did not read this far into your post, Whatagain. Since I read the news online first every morning, by the time I'm done I don't want any more bad news. This was a miraculous happy ending! It is pretty amazing that a baby that small can already pilot a helicopter. You Belgians are something else! Lugg, I would very much like to have news of Tod and will try to see if I can find out anything.
