Jeez, my lawyer sent me the new proposals by the boss, via his lawyer, at half past midnight on Saturday night. Looks like the battle is back on.

Continue to use your common sense tactics and let them use the classlessness of poor and desparate management. Cheers, Mich
P.S. I miss a good battle.

Sounds as if you do, Mich! I wouldn't want to go up against you.
Love your phrase, "the classlessness of poor & desperate management" -- brilliant.

Well, if you must know, I got a message from Fodor's, too, telling me that I am being quoted in their Provence guide. This is the 4th time for me, but the other times were about Paris. Nevertheless, congratulations are in order if this is your first time!

Well, I'm quite pleased since I almost never post on Fodor's and don't even remember posting that quote.

I got quoted a couple of days ago. On some boat trips between Phnom Penh and Saigon. The guy who quoted me had it from a Vietnamese travel agent's website!!!!! And the Vietnamese travel agent had stolen it from one of my contributions to Tales of Asia. Goddam thieves!

Actually I'm not that angry.
This guy hadn't even bothered to edit it so my description of the bad road conditions were still in the c& p.

Congratulations Bixa! A free book ( of your choice) is always welcome. I notice they keep quoting a contributor for quite a few editions. I now have all the England & London guides up until 2011 but have not paid too much attention to Fodor's lately so may have missed out on any 2012 books.
Take it as quite an honour to be quoted - it must mean they really loved what you said!! I hope you get lots more offers in the years to come.

I had someone contact me for permission to put a bit of stuff of mine on his website. I said is was ok but then some time later I did a Google search and found exactly the same stuff on loads of other websites. They probably stole it off him.

Thank you, Tod! Yeah, not only do the guidebooks use the same quotes over & over, they quote each other. What that really means is that they're not truly updating, as the unwary guidebook buyer believes. But yes, thank you because of course I am flattered to be quoted. And Mark, thank you. I though you were pulling my leg with that date, but I stuck part of the quote into google and sure enough! Should I write to Fodor's and point out to them that they left off part of the quote, which says in part: "please go to tinyurl.com/ygcdehf" ;D Gosh, HW -- in your case, I'd say the Vietnamese travel agent was doing real stealing, since you're both in travel-related businesses. I have a friend with relatives in one of the Arbëresh villages in Sicily. The Arbëresh were originally from Albania and preserve many customs from the time their ancestors left that country. The costumes and pageantry at Easter, especially, are incredibly gorgeous. My friend, who is a professional photographer, has found her photos claimed by others all over the web. Not only is it professionally infuriating, but in many cases the subjects are her family wearing their family heirlooms. There is something particularly pathetic about claiming someone elses art, or even a tiny quote, as ones own. I had someone contact me for permission to put a bit of stuff of mine on his website. I said is was ok but then some time later I did a Google search and found exactly the same stuff on loads of other websites. They probably stole it off him. Yep, once something is on the web, it's on the wind. And just because I like to quibble, I find it interesting that Fodor's tells me they're using the quote after it was already published in one of their books. Shouldn't the authors of these pithy little phrases have their permission solicited beforehand? Undoubtedly there's something in one of those tos things that we never read saying that all content becomes the property etc. etc.

I can understand that stipulation being in the TOS, otherwise forums would be continuously embroiled in pointless wrangling over what might or might not be plagiarism. It's actually rather handsome of Fodor's to give a book as thanks. Thank you, Mich! Now, where shall I plan on going?

Just thinking about how much I love my friends and I love how we all take care of each other. Especially in the last year or so, when I stubbornly refuse to do what I need and (actually)want to do, they somehow force me into it, subtly or otherwise.

Mich, I don't really know, but do know I want to do a Major Trip. Right now I'm thinking SE Asia. Wish I spoke more languages!

Bixa, would you go by yourself? I think you would love SE Asia, I have never been, but you really seem to enjoy posts from the region, maybe hwinpp can direct you with some group travel companies where you could have a guide or companions.
We are back to Europe next year, my baby sister wants us to take her to some places in France and Belguim. I have started my planner already!

Mich, I like traveling by myself, but the times I've traveled with one or two other people were fine, too. I don't get lonely, but I do like having someone to watch my luggage when I want to go pee.
So exciting that you all get to go back to Europe so soon. Has your sister been before?

Post by mich64 on Nov 18, 2011 1:17:29 GMT
Yes Bixa, there are things about travelling alone like that you mentioned that would make it difficult being alone. I have never travelled alone, I have taken a few flights alone, but picked up by my Company or friends.
My younger sister is the only one in my family who has not been to Europe! Three of us were born there and my oldest sister was about 2 when my parents moved to France. My mom was pregnant with my younger sister when we moved back to Canada.
She is excited beyond belief! She has been saving for years and waited for her kids to be old enough to be on their own so 2012 it is! She has already booked the vacation time!
Cheers, Mich

Southeast Asia lends itself to solo travel, and it is really quite easy. And nobody really expects you to speak Thai or Vietnamese or Indonesian although wouldn't it be nice if we could?

Oh, Mich -- yes, I'll bet your sister is beside herself with excitement! She's lucky to have you for a guide.
Thanks for that, Kerouac. From what little I know, I'd think in some ways solo would be great there, as there's so much to see, it might be nice only to suit oneself. Of course the beauty of traveling with the right compatible companion is that you might wind up going somewhere just to be accommodating, then really enjoying it. There's also room sharing to keep down expenses & the aforementioned luggage watching plus.
Yeah, wouldn't it be great if those subliminal learn-while-you-sleep aids really worked?! I want to go so many places, but also love yakking with all & sundry, which I can only do in two languages.
Is speaking French of any use in Viet Nam?
