I was going through the whole report again and I really appreciate how "complete" it is, showing every aspect of the weekend -- the shopping, the decoration, the party, the cast of characters, the little side details and of course the dog.
As special "activity & event" months are starting (November and December), it would be great if more people documented daily life -- even if you are not doing something yourself, everybody around you is doing stuff! Some of us are less outgoing than others, but it certainly does not stop us from observing the world around us.

Thanks, Lola! Hm, now that you mention it, the shirt could be political as well as ecological. The answer to the "medallions" question is in the OP here. That question also makes me worry that the links in certain skins don't have enough contrast with the rest of the text. If anyone feels this is so, please let me know.Thank you, Kerouac. And really, you make a good point about capturing events if we're a little outside of the action. Sometimes it's easier, as we're concentrating on getting the money shots rather than recording family members for posterity. Although your family gathering thread managed both aspects beautifully. Yesterday, quite by accident, I happened upon two weddings. What fun to take pictures knowing no one would ever complain about a photo making 'em look old, fat, whatever.

Though there isn't a lot of color difference, it's more a failure to attend on my part.

I just came upon it and loved it too. Is Darla still so wee? My Renzo has fur like Darla. He is half-Siamese and they are very "doggy" cats.
Quoting bixa:The woman in the foreground of the next-to-the-last photo above is wearing a blouse that's a new variation which came in less than two years ago. That fabric is hand loomed and was formerly seen only as rebozos. Then someone came up with the idea of folding those in half and making either dresses or blouses. Now they're everywhere, as they're very cheap and nice and cool.
I loved that, very flattering too.

Lagatta, I love the name of your cat "Renzo".
I too enjoyed going through this thread again and my goodness Darla has certainly gained some white hair.
The photo of you in the mirror Bixa reminded me then and now of a scene from a movie, I just can not remember which one. I think a movie starring Elizabeth Taylor to which you look very similar too.

Thank you, Htmb! Hi LaGatta & hello to Renzo, too. After reading your question, I measured Darla. She was standing up & being cooperative, but in a dog way. She's about 30" long & 13" high, so somewhat bigger than she was when those pictures were taken two years ago. Another variation on the rebozo to blouse is rebozo to dress. They come down to around knee level, higher or lower depending on ones height. At any rate, they're long enough to wear as-is when it's hot. But a popular way to use them is as tunics over one of the solid-colored, slightly flounced cotton skirts from here. It's a nice look that with the right shoes & accessories even looks somewhat dressed up. Thanks, Mich. I so agree with you about Renzo's name, which seems perfect. Yes, yes, Mich ~~ I look just like Elizabeth Taylor in any one of her movies where she slinks around provocatively in a slip. . Really, I look more the way she looked in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, but thank you!

I think of Bixa as a bit taller than me or Liz (Taylor, or da Queen). Yes, Renzo is perfect, but he is fading, at 18.

My my! 18 years old, that is wonderful Lagatta. I always think of people being taller than me, must be because we are vertically challenged right Lagatta.

I have a feeling a visit to Oaxaca, or even more to far-poorer Guatemala, would leave us feeling far less vertically challenged...

The first time I realized I was tall was at Mass in Velarde NM, when I looked around and could see over the heads of every other person there. That and trying to find shoes in Santa Fe.
Isn't this just a lovely thread?
What time does the host want people to start coming when he says "3PM"?

Many, many thanks to all of you! I only meant to force Htmb to look at direct Htmb to this thread, but so much appreciate all of the new comments. I also hope everyone will re-read Kerouac's 2nd paragraph at the top of this page, #30 -- he speaks wisdom.
Yes, you petite princesses would fit in nicely here, and would look super in the ropa tipica. It's easy to be too tall here, as awnings, street signs, pruned overhanging plants, etc. are scaled too low even for people five & a half feet tall.
Lola, when the host says 3 pm, he probably thinks he means it, even though 3 may turn out to be an hour or hour and a half too early. You'll be made welcome, served pop, and be smiled at as everyone rushes around doing preparations that needed to have been finished a couple of hours earlier. Así es.

Reviving this ancient thread because I have a bunch of Oaxaca pictures & don't want to consign them to Local Color, which is where my last Oaxaca photo essay went to die. Anyway, these were taken this past Friday, December 15, and Friday is the weekend, right? Reading through the thread again made me miss Lola!

Actually, it's nice to see a homemade Stormtrooper costume rather than the commercial version which can now be seen everywhere.

Just another day in Oaxaca. Street musicians, graduates parading, happy bands, a bright color peeking over the wall.
Bixa, do I see here, in the first photo of the musicians, the same trees you photographed in a park in Havana? What are they?
I think the part I'd enjoy most is "Heading toward home with my stash of books...." Not that I don't love what I see of Oaxaca, it's just that I've loved books a lot longer.

Thanks, all! ... the street musician looks so unhappy. She does, Mick. That's why I was so struck with her sitting next to the street art that reads, "Don't cry for me." Bixa, do I see here, in the first photo of the musicians, the same trees you photographed in a park in Havana? Hmmm, it's possible, although I don't recall noting the tree in Havana. I think the tree by the musicians is a guaje. It's the tree that gave Oaxaca its name. Re: reading ~ Breeze, I just finished reading all the way through the reading thread & posted about it last night. This is an opportunity to bring it up again, so thanks. anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/2367/reading

Livia is cooing at me as I'm almost kissing the screen looking at Darla as a puppy again. I'm telling Livia "You'd look like her if you were a doggie!". I still want a rebozo blouse. The polar opposite of the "cold shoulder" tops being sold up here, short or long-sleeved but with the shoulder part cut out. No comprendo...

Darling Cheery ~ thank you so much. You have to bring your paints when you come to visit, as you will be inspired here.
Awwww ~ Hi, little Livia! Full admission, LaGatta: I recently tried on a cold shoulder blouse and would have bought it if it had fit better.

Aaaghhhck, Breeze! I came to Anyport just now fresh from trying to read that article elsewhere. NYTimes informs me I have -0- articles left this month unless I pay for full membership. I tried using vpn, but the wily devils knew it was me. Maybe my new month of articles starts tomorrow and I can see it then. Thanks for linking to it. I am a big fan of Francine Prose.

You can google the article title click from there and access NYT content that way, or you can copy the link, and then paste it into the address window of a private browser instance. the reason the VPN does nothing is that the NYT article counter is based on cookies rather than the IP address, so the VPN/proxy does nothing to help.
