Artie Shaw the musician was not a very nice man and was married 8 times. A triumph of hope over experience as they say.

Even though I know the meaning of the phrase "in thrall", I never wondered where it came from. But I just learned from a novel that slaves of Vikings were called thralls.

France remains the country that consumes the most scotch whisky in the world per capita, but apparently India has jumped into second place, ahead of Uruguay, the United States and Australia.

The first car journey in the UK was undertaken in July 1895 at Micheldever in Hampshire, the car being delivered by train from Southampton docks. Petrol had to be obtained from a chemist.

Everyone knows about the Titanic but few remember the sinking of the Empress of Ireland which sank just 2 years later in Canadian waters after a collision in fog with a Norwegian ship. It sank in just 14 minutes and over 1000 of the 1400 passengers died.

Good grief! I wonder why it's not more remembered. It was on a very good BBC programme about the golden age of Liners.

I would imagine that the steamship lobby muzzled the newspapers. That's how things worked back then. That's how things still work, albeit less efficiently.

I learned today, not for the first time, that motors using gas (we say essence) work less well with diesel... You want the full story ? Really ? Ok.
Mh wife tells me the tractor (grassmower on which you sit and enjoy mowing the grass - has a problem with the battery).
Me. Hum. What happened? Well i wanted to start it, and it stopped. Me : hum. You did start it then ? My wife : yes. 4 times, but it coughed and stopped. After blowing heavy fumes. Me. Hum. Show me. Ok. Well, the tank is nearly empty. My wife : yet i put a lot of gas. Me. Hum, where from ? Here. That jerrycam Me. Him, this is diesel. My wife: what? You idiot you have diesel instead of gas in jerrycans ? Me. Yes. Her. You are an idiot. I would never think someone would be so stupid as to keep diesel in jerrycans. Me. We i wouldn't think someone would be so stupid as to pour diesel thinking it is gas. Her... i ley you guess. Me : huho, find alternatives. (Thinking) Her : i am buying gas and wi use the small grassmower. Me : i buy a flexible pipe to remove the diesel. (Thinking) Me : i empty the tank. Clean it with gas then let it lie a few minutes then restart. Gnnnngnnnngmnnn Ok, the motor is only sucking air. Blublublublub Seems the motor is sucking something else. Blublub boom fumes boom more fumes then motor starts. I feel like Hercules doing a 13th job. My wife is surprised. I feel good. The landmower works perfect. Gas...

Oh my goodness! I'm a lucky gal to have a husband and gardener that step in when things get technical.....And an electric lawn mower that works off Solar power. We don't cut the lawns when it is a very dull day. Takes too much from the batteries but when its brilliantly sunny like today...It's perfect. My lawn area is big enough to warrant a "Ride-on" mower but they are too expensive.

When my family got a riding mower, my brother and I stopped complaining about having to mow the lawn. Well, maybe we complained a little less.

Well ours is fun. And it cuts the grass in tiny pieces so you don't have to collect it. So it is just like driving a kart. Kind of.

I don't know how many people would admit &/or verbalize it, but it appears to be human nature to venerate those who have more, whether it be more money, goods, looks, celebrity, whatever. Somehow it indicates that "God likes you best".

Holocaust is the choice of human beings. God gave humans the liberty. They cann freely choose to be nice or to kill their own. But when something good happens, it is His doing...
