Didn't Zuma head the youth wing as well?
They're firebrands there but once they get more responsible jobs I think they calm down a bit... at least I hope so.

Apparently the head of the ANC youth wing has said the government should just nationalize white owned farms because it's been going too slowly. If they really do it I see a second Zimbabwe on the horizon and a new mass exodus of whites to Australia and the UK. I can see that happening in Zimbabwe, it's an extremely volatile area isn't it? Tod, you make some really good points, I wonder how life will change for the people of these African countries in the future. Something has to change somehow.

South Africa at least still has the great advantage of being the richest country on the continent. I think that even most of the radical elements would prefer to avoid doing anything that could jeopardize that status.

Deyana - Zimbabwe is done and dusted! The country is a shell of it's former self, growing little or no food since white owned farms were taken over by Mugabe's henchmen and then left to rot in the midday sun. I was quite pleased to see this article in our local newspaper today. It explains a lot. Sorry, about the size but perhaps you can enhance it.

That sounds like such an interesting article, I tired enlarging it, but no luck, Tod. I can make out what it says on the most part though. I've seen some quite graphic pictures of what the people in Zimbabwe are having to endure, it's truly awful.
I guess the problems will not get better for many Africans countries as long as they have corrupt governments or no real trustworthy leadership at all. What to do about it though? What can the every day person do, where can they go? I can't imagine having to live in such conditions, it must be so hard to cope.

Sometimes I think that especially in Africa, 'richness' is the direct route to civil war.

Interesting to read back through this. On Monday I'll be setting off for a southern rather than south African road trip. The plan will be to drive from Lusaka, down to Livingstone/Victoria Falls, across to Botswana, skirt down the edge, into South Africa and meet Mrs M at Johannesburg. From there we will head south south west around the western side of Lesotho, keep going until north of Port Elizabeth, head east and then north east along the coast, keep going past Durban and then head north west back to Johannesburg. In effect a very large circle around Lesotho.
Mrs M will be dropped off to fly out and I'll have nearly three more weeks to get back to Lusaka. Via Namibia and possibly back into Botswana, I expect. Just to mention the 'been there done that' thing - I've been fortunate enough to have travelled and seen enough of this area such that apart from a few places of interest with Mrs M, I'll be searching for nice hotels/lodges and driving long distances, minimum 8000 and more like 9000km. So far, I'll have to get my car serviced before I get back. Just to let you know.
