They're probably already setting up the duet with Susan Boyle.

people started screaming and applauding loudly almost immediately and then in waves. I think they should have listened to the singers a bit better. But maybe it's me as I was trying to actually listen to the song/lyrics. I think I am turning into a grumpy old git.

Oh yes ~~ I know what you mean! I've never understood that. Oh, when the boy lets that incredible voice out, it provokes some kind of reaction, but drowning him out is just dumb. Did you see that one of the judges simply mimed clapping & silently mouthed bravo? So much nicer.
There's a longer video showing Simon C. being an unpleasant snot to the kids and sort of setting the audience up with "what does this awkward fat child think he can do?" He's also unnecessarily brutal to the girl after the piece.
Here's the long version, if you want to see it: I absolutely love the expression on the guy who leans forward at 2:18.
pee ess ~~ I don't know how that kind of show works, but is it possible that applicants have a better chance of getting on if there is good audience reaction? I think this is the audition, not the actual show.

In the French version, the audience could sometimes influence the judges, but of course the real jackpot was the (paid) telephone and SMS voting in which the home viewers could save someone that the judges had not selected.

I think there is something like that on American Idol or whatever it's called. I've only seen part of one of those shows once because of a friend who was totally into the show.
