There was an 8.6 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, followed by an 8.2 aftershock. Although the tremor was felt as far away as Bangkok, there have been no reports of deaths or destruction so far. A tsunami alert was issued for the entire Indian Ocean, but has now been lifted. Linking the CNN reports as the information on earthquakes and tsunamis is quite interesting: edition.cnn.com/2012/04/11/world/asia/indonesia-earthquake/index.html?hpt=wo_c1

I was keeping an eye on the tsunami warning and also imagining how they probably had no trouble at all convincing people to go to high ground this time. But it is even better that nothing happened, although I hope it doesn't lull people again into a false sense of security.

Enough foreigners in Phuket haven't learnt from the last one. In spite of locals running for the hills local Thai TV stations were saying foreign tourists were running for the beaches.
