I hear people talk about how you can use an ice-cube tray to freeze this, that and the other (herbs, etc)...
so do you freeze anything that isn't water in your ice-cube tray and if so what do you freeze?
How many ice-cube trays do you own? Or do you buy these flimsy plastic bags types that are destined to be one use only?

I have 3 ice cube trays, but I would not want to devote one of them to freezing herbs, even though the concept appeals to me -- or it would if I could grown my own herbs. Since, I can't, I just buy the containers of pre-frozen herbs than you can find in all of the supermarkets here. At the moment, I think I have frozen basil and frozen tarragon on hand.

I have frizzened lemon juice, after some friends gave us a bounty of lemons from their tree. (Yellow lemons are not commonly sold in Mexico.)
Apart from that, a couple of years ago, we gave up hassling with ice cube trays and just buy a bag of ice or two and drop it into our chest freezer.

I have had an automatic ice maker for a few years so haven't had trays for a while. But I do remember freezing a portion of broth in a tray, which was handy when I only needed a little. I might have to explore this again.

The trick with using ice cube trays is to freeze whatever it is then pop them out into a plastic bag. They won't stick together and you have your tray free again to use for other things.
The last thing I did this for was stock reduced down lots. I have the one use bags as well with lime juice in it. Both the tray and bags aren't used often since like cristina my fridge makes crushed or whole cubes of ice.

Fabulous idea Mockchoc thank you! I have about 6 ice trays filled with freshly squeezed lemon juice from this past seasons lemon harvest. (I also have some in containers and freezer bags for larger portions.) I was avowed to doing it this year as I long for fresh squeezed lemonade come the summer months and the lemons are long gone. I refuse to pay up to $1.00 per lemon and only to end up with some tiny inferior no juice lemon as the result. I have done herb concoctions in trays in the past but I have a tendency to forget about them and end up with a freezer surprise many months later.
