Locks and quais.
By my last full day I was walked out, I had earlier noticed the Canauxrama boat parked outside their office on the Bassin de la Villette. I had seen reports that it was a long and boring trip but it had interested me as it passed through the locks and under the pretty arched bridges on the Canal St Martin. It was also that my weary legs demanded that I sit down. So I took the trip from the Port de lArsenal by Bastille, up to the Bassin.
Almost as soon as we started we were plunged into the tunnel under Boulevard Richard Lenoir
We emerged into the light under rue du Faubourg du Temple to be immediately confronted by our first pair of lock gates
It is a little tedious to wait for the water to lift the boat to the next level but the operation is quite interesting. Incidentally, the people who had grabbed the front row of seats got quite damp from the spray as the sluices were opened and the water gushed in. A Each arched footbridge had a quota of spectators to watch us pass
We also passed someone maintaining a big wall painting
At last we approached the final lock at the Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad, passing the big fire station on the Quai de Valmy. Note the metro passing over the road.
We sailed out into the Bassin and on up to the Pont Levant at rue de Crimee
We had to wait a moment while this was raised, the footbridge was crowded with spectators.
Passing through we carried on past the Parc de la Villette with it's IMAX cinema in the futuristic Geode
until we reached Boulevard Macdonald, where we turned to make our way back to the Canauxrama office on Quai de la Loire where the trip finished. It had been a beautiful day and I found it to have been an entertaining trip.
