I have had itchy feet since I started back to work in August, so I'm excited that I'm going to be able to spend several days in the Washington, DC area later this month. I will also have the good part of two days to wander the city by myself, so I've been working on a bit of an itinerary. I plan to spend most of one day at the National Gallery. Between the two different buildings they have free docent tours starting every half hour if I so desire, or I can just explore the galleries by myself. There are also another couple of art museums I may visit. I have also booked a Capitol Building tour for one morning, but I'm still iffy on that one. I did a tour several years ago, and don't remember getting to see very much. I will probably visit some of the monuments I didn't get to last time, but most likely I will just wander the central DC area with my camera and look for interesting people, places, and things to photograph.
I will be taking public transport into, out of, and around the city so I've ordered a Metro SmarTrip card. It should be a lot of fun. There's plenty to do, but if you have any suggestions, please send them my way.

No suggestions from me, but I'm delighted that you're getting to do this, & not just for your sake, either.

Why is that, bixa? Thinking I might post a report or two and maybe a few photos? ;D

Why do I feel so, so transparent all of a sudden?

I'll be heading to DC again this fall. I need to start planning my trip and book my flights.

For just $250 I can take Amtrak to Washington, DC and back. The problem is it would take 18 hours one way. I could drive it in 12 or 13.

Well, yes, but .........
That's 12 or 13 hours with your hands on the wheel & having to pay attention to driving, to dithering over where to pull over to eat or whether or not you can make it to the next potty stop. Also, how many $$ of fuel will you consume on the trip?
Those extra hours would be so worth it since you can get up and walk around, take pictures out the window, pee at will, snooze, possibly find interesting conversationalists, read, etc.

Oh, yes, not to mention the several mini-nervous breakdowns I'd have along the way, but 18 hours on Amtrak? I think I'd rather fly.
