I can just picture. The old bearded gentleman on a cloud. He raises his hand and says “Americans! I give you the right to own as many guns as you can and to kill each other with impunity. Small children! You will often be the main target particularly as there will soon be many more of you. Enjoy!”
It must be in the bible somewhere..

The Supreme Court allows guns but just banned abortion. Obviously they love life.

Just read an article in the Washington Post about the Highland Park shooting. This kind of news is crushingly sad and depressing, not least because we know we'll be reading a variation of the same news within a few days.
Anyway, the article states: So far this year, the United States has recorded more than 250 mass shootings, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive.
Today is only the 185th day of this year.
(In his post above, Mark linked to the Gun Violence Archive.)

I know that we basically reserve this topic for the situation in North America, but I was fascinated by the fact that the gun used to assassinate Shinzō Abe in Japan today was homemade. I wonder how many gun crimes there would be in the U.S. if everybody had to make their own firearm. Yes I understand that this would increase the number of knife crimes...

In 2006 there were six shootings with firearms total in Japan. Shows you what is possible in a well-ordered and run country.

I wouldn't call Japan a well-run country, but that's another debate.

Fair enough, that's highly subjective anyway. But it'd be hard to argue that they aren't well-ordered.

That's why I didn't contest that they are well-ordered. (Some might say "excessively" ordered.)

In 2006 there were six shootings with firearms total in Japan. CNN reported that in 2021 there was a grand total of one death by firearms in Japan.

New Orleans is currently #1 as having most homicides per capita. 150 to date.
It's like the Wild West out there and no signs of letting up as NOPD is strapped by a lack of personnel and the D.A.'s office can't handle the number of incarcerations and no sooner are they arrested they are released in 24-48 hours.

I don't know how many of you have ever handled a handgun, but they are heavy. I can't imagine that the average adult could pick one up for the first time and efficiently shoot it. All these kids who take guns to school or carry them outside the house are apparently familiarizing themselves at leisure in the home.

It is probably not useful to put "gun control" and "United States" in the same sentence as they appear to be mutually exclusive.

Something is rotten in US. I'm presently crying after reading about a car being driven into a group of migrants waiting at a bus station in Brownsville, Texas. No gun? No problem. I want to throw up every time some clueless person in the US asks me if I'm not afraid to live in Mexico.

Time to shelter in place in Maine. 22 dead and 50-60 injured by just one guy. And the guy is a firearms instructor.

A 81 old guy shot to death an uber driver because he thought she was involved in a scam. The Uber driver asked him the package she was asked to transport. The guy shot her.
