just curious: did you already get a pasport for your girl? were they as stubborn about getting a biometric pic from a newborn as over here?

no, didn't get one yet, as i suppose it will be a while before we travel abroad... though now that you say it - would we need one within the EU or only outside? i might decide to visit some friends or relatives in the neighbouring countries at some point...

Oh she is just a beautiful little one! Thank you for posting Rikita, she is a darling. These photos makes it difficult to imagine her noisy bouts, she looks blissfully happy. how about this one then? just to prove that she can also scream ... but she can also laugh:

they're valid six years and expire at the 12th birthday by the latest - thus since you'll most likely need one (+ extension) anyway, there's no gain in waiting, so I'd recommend to just get one once it's convenient for you some time in the near future (if I recall correctly, both parents need to sign, so it's either all of you on one date or one of you will need to return with the application, you'll then get the passport on the spot).
afaik you need them within Schengen, too - and especially for check-in for planes (distant acquaintances of us learned this the hard way...).
- isn't there a section for audiofiles at APiaS? ;D - great pics!

Gorgeous baby, Rikita.
About the hair colour, I was born with auburn hair, which turned to black, which turned to platinum blonde. I covered all the bases. ;D There was a tri-coloured lock of hair somewhere at some point in time but it's long gone now.

I'll take the laughing baby, not the other one! No need for a passport in the Schengen zone yet... I don't know about Germany, but France also just recently cancelled the requirement (in the Schengen zone) for a "border crossing authorisation" that minor children required if only one of the two parents was travelling with them. This was obviously to prevent "child theft" in broken couples, but it was extremely annoying in normal circumstances.

well i will try to find out all about them as soon as possible then, whether i should get one and all... it'd be cool anyway for her to already have her own passport. i found it funny when the letter with her health insurance card arrived, and was addressed to "Mrs. Agnes [insert last name]"...

You can find out -- I think that in France parents can no longer have children on their passport until the kids are 16, as used to be the case. Since Germany and France are both in the EU and Schengen, the same rule might apply.

interesting article, bixa...
the part about forgetting what it was like is even happening in a smaller scale - when she had her worst times (she is probably about average crying wise, she can have some quite bad days and other quite good ones), i'd forget all about the crying when she was sleeping or just happy, and all about the sleeping and happiness when she was crying. i'd go from thinking i have the easiest baby ever to i have the most difficult baby ever several times in one day...
the advantage is that she is quite a good night sleeper, so i never had phases where i felt completely sleep deprived. tired sometimes, but always still manageable... i hope the sleeping stays good/gets even better - one mother told me her daughter slept great until she was about six months old, since then she is suddenly waking up every hour...
i wonder how much of this time i will remember in a few years...

My son was born at 4 in the morning. I don't know if that affected his sleeping habits or not, but he would. not. go. to. sleep. at night. Dr. Spock said to let the kid yell, that no baby would cry for more than half an hour. Obviously my baby had not read that part of the book. Exhausted, I whined to my mother, who was totally unsympathetic, saying that it was poetic justice.

I sympathise Bixa. I well remember our eldest, and they are always the worst because the parents are anxious, and that transmits to the child. I had to lug our pram, which in those days was the proper heavy coachbuilt job, up the stairs to the bedroom. This was to enable me to have it beside the bed and keep rolling it back and forth 54 years ago, but who's counting, I can't remember what I had for lunch but some memories linger. ;D ;D

And my oldest would only sleep during the night if she was rocking in the swing. Problem was the stupid thing only went for 12 minutes, before having to be hand-cranked again. I remember periods of time when I would sleep for 12 minutes, wake up and crank the swing, sleep for twelve minutes.....
I was in shock when her brothers were born, as they actually slept without me having to resort to any trickery!

from what i heard there are some babies that only sleep when carried around... i am quite glad she is not like that...
sleeping during the day is actually more difficult for her than at night. so she already seems to know what day and night is, though when like today she only manages three half hour naps during the day, it is not enough and she is quite cranky in the evening because she is so tired...
well but also she is working so hard at trying to learn things, which i guess makes her tired too... she is not someone who gives up easily it seems, rather, she gets angry when things don't work the way she imagines they should...

My son had a 'noo-noo' which he rolled around on his cheek. I don't know how it started but it was a simple teeny ball of wood shavings - like you used to get packed around fresh fruit . Needless to say I had a stash of teeny balls ready at bedtime. It obviously is a hypnotic ritual which must sooth the baby's mind. I was told pacifiers are also tools of hypnotic mini- trances and many baby's get that far away look when sucking on a pacifier.
