I harvested some tomatillos this morning and some baby green beans, little haricots, will have them tonight with something, steamed lightly with butter and a squeeze of lemon juice. My tomatoes are almost ready,I hope my husband doesn't neglect them while I'm out of town. Looking forward to fresh asparagus up in NY and with any luck, some fiddleheads!!! I am thrilled to hear about your radishes Rikita!!

We've had the first of our garden's strawberries the past few days. So nice.
Harvesting mesclun and rocket/arugula now to make way for another round.
Wait. Was that a yucky face next to fiddleheads, casimira? I've never tried them.

Oooooooo ~~ that is something I've always wanted to try. Wikipedia says, "...the fragrant edible flesh can be described as sweet and tangy, citrusy with peach flavor and texture."
True?

True. Possibly one of the best fruits IMO. Right up there with cherries and peaches.
But they're difficult to export because they're very difficult to transport.

I am going to hold out hope. Mangosteens are grown in Mexico and it was in this country that I first ate lychee and rambutan.
Different kinds of pineapples appear in waves here. The one I bought Monday the vendor swore was very sweet and "would not burn the mouth". That was true, but I felt it lacked some of the true fresh pineapple character.

Yesterday we bought the first plump and juicy and sweet lychees of the season. I had them slightly chilled when I got home from work.

I need to go to the big downtown market to see if they have any lychees. For whatever reason, they're always sold by young men with wheelbarrows full of them.
There are still lots of mangoes here, with one kind nudging out another as the season progresses.

And for goodness sakes, let's hope they don't! still only radishes on my balcony but there are some green tomatos (not enough sun yet for them to turn red though and the chrysantemum salad is growing too. Did you know that tomatoes ripen in the dark? If you think they are pretty much ripe, you pick them, then put them in a paper bag or in a drawer & let them turn red.

What great stuff you have there, Cas!
Are those peaches at the top or nectarines? I can get neither here so there is some wishful thinking involved...

Yes,HW, the top pic is peaches, just coming in,several varieties. Am making peach ice cream later today.... These are fresh picked red beans (kidney beans). I had never seen them fresh only dried.

Hmmm. Maybe fresh red beans would be tastier than dried. (heresy, I know)
Beautiful produce & pictures! I almost wept looking at the okra.
Are the blue things plums or blueberries?

Post by Deleted on Jun 2, 2010 18:34:19 GMT
Yes,blueberries. Don't see plums here locally, don't think they grow here. Yes,they had two different varieties of okra,a small, baby okra and the generic.

The produce is beautiful, Casimira, but I can see evidence on it of all the rain you've had there. Are any of the vendors complaining about crop problems because of it?
The peaches are gorgeous, as is the little peach enjoying one.

Bixa, didn't see this until just now, sorry. Yes,the produce is clearly showing evidence of all the rain we've been having. However,it has not harmed this years fig crop!!!

Bixa, will figs not grow there? I feel badly when I post these because I know how much you love them.

Actually, they will grow, and I abandoned a tree at my last house. However, you hardly ever see a fig tree and never see fresh ones for sale. That's because the figs are sold green to be made into an insanely cloying compote.
The last time I had fresh figs was when I attended a yard sale in the heart of Xoxo. The people there had two fig trees and kindly shared the few figs on them with me.
I don't know if trees planted here would ever attain the monumental gorgeousness of the ones in Louisiana. However, after seeing your last post, I'm thinking seriously about planting one in this yard. I do worry about having enough irrigation for it in the dry months, though.

Hooray, Fumobici! Was it damaged by winter weather?
Those are jewels, Imec, absolute jewels.

Post by fumobici on Jul 9, 2010 4:15:06 GMT
Yes quite, although it wasn't a particularly harsh Winter. We are at pretty much the northern limit for growing figs here so we expect some Winter damage and accept it as normal.
