Sandstorms look like a ravenous monster. Frankly I would like to see one for real some day. In a safe place, of course.

Wow! I'd only read about sand storms, then recently watched The English Patient with its big sandstorm. As far as I can tell, there is not much warning before they hit. My god, imagine the clean up afterwards!

I can hardly remember them but there was a season I think. It used to get as dark as night and we'd all gather in one room.

Very frightening. I do recall reading that they have a season as HW mentioned.

You have to try to stuff up every crack or opening with rags or papers, but everybody says that a lot of dust and sand still gets in.

Aside from the mention Bixa made about the movie The English Patient ,I remember there being frequent reference to these in The Alexandria Quartet. There was a name for the season when they occur, can't recall what it is.

Sometime in Europe we get a sand deposit from the Sahara -- maybe about once every 5 or 10 years. You go out one morning and there is a tan layer of fine powder on the cars and everything else, after a tremendous sandstorm in Africa.

casimira - the season and the wind is called the 'Khamseen' or 'Khamsin', same thing really. This is the Arabic number for 50 and denoted a fifty day period usually from April onwards. We get problems with this in Cairo every year, but it's generally just a wind that blows and not a sand storm, though they do happen every year.
It is the time of the year that the medical authorities dislike (as well as heatwaves) because many many people have breathing difficulties.
