Thank you for that article, LaGatta. I'm embarrassed to admit that I never knew that La Jornada was founded by Toledo. For those willing to get past the paywall, the NYTimes has quite a good obituary as well.
Usually NYT will let us read a few articles a month.
Are there any memorials or celebrations of his life in Oaxaca (City or State)? I am very sad I can't ask my friend who died not long ago more about Toledo - and vice-versa. I'll PM you about my friend a bit later.
Oh yes -- just minutes after his death was announced a velorio was organized at IAGO. That was @11 pm and it continued throughout the following day. There was also an official homage at the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá, with quite a few calls on social media to boycott that one & to attend the one in IAGO, where Toledo's family was gathered.
1955...I had heaps of ballet books but the photos of Alicia Alonso were my favourites..."she comes from Cuba...where's that?..." Finally I located a small island. Years later, in class at high school the teacher asked where Cuba was. Only I knew where, and when asked how I knew, apparently I said "Because that's where Alicia Alonso comes from."
