I was going to post that a while back, but it ended up slipping my mind. It was nonetheless big news in Europe.

Renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill has died, age 82 of covid. He designed a lot of projects in Catalonia and France. Fans of the movie Brazil saw quite a bit of his work in Noisy-le-Grand. In Paris, his most visible work is Place de Catalogne in Montparnasse. But he is even better known in Montpellier and Metz. Note: the central area is going to be replaced by a miniature forest in the near future.

French cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé has died at age 89. In most of the world, he was known for the Le Petit Nicolas books and cartoons, but in the United States he was famous for his covers for The New Yorker. Sempé

From decades ago, I remember one of his cartoons: a shipwreck scene like the Titanic with hundreds of people running hither and yon, but on the bridge a grande dame with a lorgnette confronts the captain - imagine Edith Evans's Lady Bracknell:"Qu'est-ce qu'on m'apprend, capitaine? On sombre? My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Ha ~ good one! I don't remember that particular cartoon.
I'm shocked that he's gone. His artistic presence was such that it was taken for granted in the way that features of nature are, even as we deeply appreciated his talent. Really, when I think of "New Yorker cover", I immediately think of Sempé. His work was always so fresh that it hadn't occurred to me that he'd gotten old along with everyone else.

I loved his work as well. I have to remind myself what Bixa said about aging. We always seem them for granted. That link was cool Kerouac. Thanks for posting it.

The Sempé cartoon in the article reminds me of the 'Sod Off' poster my mate had on his wall in the mid 70s...

I am not familiar with this particular artist but read the article and was fascinated by many of his quotes about his work. Of particular note is how he was dissatisfied with the tools available that he needed and resorted to making his own. Thanks for posting this Kimby.

Many of his completely black paintings got philistines riled up. I had no idea he was still alive.

OH NO!!!!! He was by far one of our all-time favorite cartoonists. His style was so unique!! One of the very first things we would do when we received our latest copy of The New Yorker was to look for his illustrations/cartoons. There are just too many memorable ones to count. (Yours Bixa a great example! Thank you. ) We knew he was quite old as I had looked up to see if he was still alive sometime this past year and saw that he was. Lo and behold, he still had a couple of cartoons in the past year. He will be so missed by us and many other of his fans. R.I.P. Booth

That really ticks me off. My subscription is supposed to give me a certain number of articles to share with others, whether or not they're subscribers. I looked up the rules & found this: Articles can not be gifted or shared using non-gift social sharing optionsWhat does that even mean? Either I can share it or I cannot. I'm going to phone them tomorrow.

I’ve just found I can get round it. Share the method, please! tasteful and well thought out The way I've been described since babyhood.
