I didn't know whether to place this in this section or in the image bank, but as it's a bit of a game, let's try it here. Sometimes we take photos of things and people have a hard time figuring out what they are (I'm thinking about onlymark's pictures of the Jaipur Observatory). So in the interest of edification – What is it? Guess!

There is/was a curio like thread on here with objects etc. that posters could take guesses at, with the help of hints. It was great fun I remember. Only Mark may have been the originator of it, but, not the thread you mention I don't think.
In any event, am clueless as to your photo/entry but will keep my eyes peeled to be sure.
Looking more closely it does remind me of some type of fossil reminiscent of a fossilized piece of bark we found in our garden years back. Fascinating.

Ah, I couldn't find any thread like that, casi, or I wouldn't have started a new one.
It's not a fossil, though. Much newer.

Almost looks like a mouse has been working on it.

K, found it after scouring and scrolling about, (it's kinda like going up into the attic as a child and finding all these cool things...there's soooo much stuff on here!!).
Anyway, it's on page 2 of this section of The Arcade entitled, Mystery Objects, indeed started by OM.

Is it chewing gum?

Eisch!!!!!!! Although I see where you're coming from. As much as I loathe chewing gum in any form, shape or sound I really hope it is not. Say it isn't so.

OK, thanks for playing, folks, but fumobici wins, well, whatever the prize is.
It's a bar of Lava soap, chewed by rats over the winter. Now, Lava soap is used by mechanics, oil rig workers, messy folks. It contains ground pumice stone. We left a bar in the trailer over the winter and this is what remains. All I can do is think about those poor rats' intestines after eating all that soap and ground stone. Must have cleaned them out real well!
But I did think it looked a little like a prehistoric knapped stone knife. As a side note, I learned how to make knapped stones on one of my gigs - most satisfying!

Good game, good choice of mystery object!

Our clever Fumobici comes through on the first shot. Well done. Never would have guessed that. I do remember Lava soap well, it was used on the farm and, yes, all that grit from the pumice felt weird. I can't imagine a creature ingesting it but, then again, I have a bar of brown soup, Octagon, used for removing stains, sans the pumice, chewed at while still in the wrapper under my kitchen sink. I thought roaches but, now I am thinking mice.

I remember that thread. I think I gave it up because it was a bit too easy to use google images to track down the object.

In all due modesty I both failed to identify the object and misidentified the rodent.

I've put soap out to deter deer in the garden and found it eaten on. Probably by deer.

OK, here is another. This is a homemade device, made out of pill bottles and a pen. It's missing one component, which is easy to find. Can you guess what it's used for?

Looks a bit nefarious to me. Can't be for preparing food or drink with the funky improvised plastic pieces. Hmmmm. I'm stumped.

Here's a wild guess. Knowing your penchant for seed saving I suspect it may have something to do with that. A seed distributor or whatever the technical term for it is.
You sure do come up with some intriguing mystery items.
I love it.

Do you fill it with water? Something for watering seeds/plants when you're not there.

Or..... a gerbil water feeder.

Oh, don't give us the answer Lizzy. Make us use our brain power. Maybe a hint, but not too blatant a give away.

Looks a bit like an improvised airlock for fermentation, like you might use to make kimchi or beer.

I am stumped.

Oh, fumobici wins again! Maybe I will have to send you that Phoenix cake somehow...
It's an airlock for making fermented beverages. The pen part goes through the cork, the small pill bottle resting on the inside rises and releases the air pressure. My husband made it (and others) and we're going to be using it on the bottles of elderflower champagne we're making this coming weekend. It works great and it was free. (He's an amateur engineer and loves inventing devices).
