Had a brief haitus whilst I was ill, I felt too rough to bother with all the denial. However I'm better now, just a bit of nerve pain...so I'm going back on the 800 calories for a week or two. Then all being well I will go up to 1,000.
Made myself a vegetable soup today with small amounts of courgette, cabbage, a carrot, an onion, bit of a swede, celeriac and parsnip and a herb stock. It was delicious unlikely as it may seem...

Just giving up sugar in all it's forms is the fashionable thing to do, but the thought of not having ANY carbohydrate at all is too much to bear. I have just reduced the amount because of the calorie content.

Me and her tried a no carb diet. She got on with it but after a week or so I had to stop.

A recent blood test showed that my husband had high blood sugar levels so he cut out sugar altogether. But he is already really skinny so there is no way he can reduce carbs too. He has a hard time putting on weight.

What did the clinicians suggest bjd? It must be very difficult to manage. My hubby had a high blood glucose. He had an HbA1c test that showed that he had been eating too many carbs long term. We got it down by reducing the high sugar things in his diet which...tbf..were things he bought himself like sweets, biscuits and chocolate.
Incidentally.in case you're interested. Blood glucose tests just show how much sugar you have in your blood at a point in time, so folk can 'cheat' by just cutting down for 24 hrs or so. There's another test which shows a broader picture. Over the lifetime of red blood cells (about 35 days) glucose molecules in the bloodstream bind to haemoglobin molecules (they pass through the red cell membrane). So by testing for the HbA1c the clinician can see how the patient has been consuming sugar over a longer period of time.
In the HbA1c test a blood sample is taken, the red cells selected by centrifugating (the heavier red cells sink to the bottom of the tube and can be removed with pipette) 'washed' by mixing with a low ionic strength solution, the cells disrupted releasing their contents and the glycosylated haemoglobin ascertained...it was lovely test to do in the old days...nowadays it's automated. I digress..I hope that your husband manages to get his blood sugar levels down...Jeff has a little automated tester that helps him stay I control. Now he's slim but his levels sometimes go up...

Thanks for the information, Cheery. In fact, the doctor didn't say anything. When my husband picked up his results, I was the one who saw that the glucose levels were too high and had gone up a lot from the previous year. It's still in "pre-diabetes" range. That's why he cut out the sugar, which he used a lot of.
He is going to wait another month or so (so that it will be 3 months) and ask the doc for another blood test prescription, to see whether not putting so much sugar in his tea, not eating chocolate or cakes, etc will have made a difference.
I'll pass your information on to him.

Life starts when you become diabetic...
I cut diet coke again. I will make it that i don't fall back. I stop then - one per week - one per day - not after noon
I am sure i will lose weight, 3 liters a day of coke plus some more liquid diatend my stomach, which asks to be filled. I hope to eat less simply by reducing the volume of my stomach.
I also stopped alcohol but only till 1st dec. Then will be reevaluated.

There is also "age-onset diabetes", so apparently more common as you get older. And more common in men than women.

I have seen more and more people my age (and younger) get caught by their sugar and cholesterol levels and have to make major mostly unpleasant changes. I almost envy them because my sugar and cholesterol levels remain excellent at every test while I would love a scary excuse to cut out certain things, which would make me lose weight.
The only effort that I have managed to make is to keep my weight stable. Every time it drifts up a little bit, I tighten a few screws to make sure it goes down again to where it was.
