, that's where I'll send my precious vote. Congratulations, Fumobici. In spite of all the discussions on here about politics, you are the first American I have heard extol the preciousness of your single vote.

Remember the song from "Hair" called Aquarius? All about the peace and understanding that would come with the new century...I wish I could remember the words...don't we all? As a platform it’s kind of weak on specifics.... “When the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius Age of Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Harmony and understanding Sympathy and trust abounding No more falsehoods or derisions Golden living dreams of visions Mystic crystal revelation And the mind's true liberation Aquarius Aquarius When the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius Age of Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Oh, let it shine, c'mon Now everybody just sing along Let the sun shine in Open up your heart and let it shine on in When you are lonely, let it shine on Got to open up your heart and let it shine on in And when you feel like you've been mistreated And your friends turn away Just open your heart, and shine it on in”

This is going to be a good watch. Everyone should watch that. By far the most secure way to run an election is to use hand-marked ballots counted by hand in full public view. The only possible purpose of electronic voting machines is the ability to commit fraud with them.

Rachel Maddow had an hour long interview with Elizabeth Warren tonight. Well worth a watch for anyone interested. It should soon be available on either msnbc or YouTube.

Thanks, Htmb. A friend (a Warren supporter) told me last night to watch Maddow's interview with Sanders. The Warren one should be equally interesting.

I have the Sanders episode recorded to watch later. I like Rachel Maddow. She’s smart and critically presents facts without all the drama.

Exactly! No unnecessary drama, but she is passionate.

I know it's "necessary" in an election campaign, but I am always dismayed to what extent two candidates on basically the same side can rip into each other to try to get an advantage. (And then of course make up at the end as though they love each other.) It's the same everywhere, but I still find it hypocritical.
As you people watch it for the American presidential campaign, I also have to watch it for our little bitty municipal campaign in Paris where at least 4 or 5 candidates on basically the same side say the most awful things until the first round of the election in 9 days. And then for the second round a week later they have to kiss and make up as though they never said those things.

Yes, we also get news of the Parisian municipal campaign. But as for Biden and Sanders, in many countries they would be in different parties, though parties able to form coalitons. For example, we won national health insurance under a Liberal, New Democrat coalition. Liberals closer to the US Democrats; NDP: social-democrats or democratic socialists.

Actually, they are in different parties since Sanders is not a member of the Democratic party.

(And then of course make up at the end as though they love each other.) It's the same everywhere, but I still find it hypocritical. There's an old joke about an enthusiastic young new MP being shown around by an old hand in the party, and remarking on how close the seats are to the enemy side. "Oh no" says the old lag, "those are your opponents. Your enemies are on this side." On the other hand, several commentators have remarked on how friendly the three remaining candidates for the Labour Party leadership seem to be as they trail round the country to different hustings meetings. And the reporting seems to suggest that, though they're emphasising different topics, they aren't getting in negative personal digs. So far.

I just heard that Kamala Harris has joined the Biden herd. (Or, as my husband puts it, she got "the call") Warren is still holding out.

Warren has nothing to gain by backing a losing horse. I suspect she’ll wait till there’s a clear leader, then throw her support to him, hoping for the VP nod, which would put her in first place for POTUS 2024, America’s first female president. Presuming Trump is defeatable.

But those old men wouldn't even let her think about it until 2028 since they are in the prime of life.

But those old men wouldn't even let her think about it until 2028 since they are in the prime of life. I disagree. I think either Biden or Bernie would be one-term presidents, so VP pick is crucial. ‘Murica isn’t ready for a President Stacy Abrams, IMO. President Warren, maybe.

I agree. While I would like to see Stacy Abrams’ political star continue to brighten over the next several years, I would prefer to see someone with more experience as Vice President this time around. I’d also like to see a female candidate. BTW.....just a reminder that Tulsi is still in the race. Also, rumors are still out there that the orange chief plans to dump his current VP and pick Nikki Haley as a running mate.

I said that Trump would pick Nikki Haley before he announced he was sticking with Mike Pence. But by choosing the VP to be Coronavirus czar, is Trump throwing Penny under the bus? Could be.
Nikki Haley has been back on the airwaves lately...

Yes I saw that, but I guess I'm an outrider. (Not that it makes any actual difference as I live north of the other end of Lake Champlain, but I am not at all a person who became more moderate in my dotage).

With elections in just one week in France, here they are worrying about old people NOT going to vote because of Covid-19. This disrupts certain political strategies. And so who knows how people will be feeling in the United States in 8 months? Of course they'll still just have a choice of two old men no matter what.

A sure recipe for electoral fraud! Mailed in ballots are actually very secure. Though my mother-in-law could have voted her husband’s ballot when he was too infirm to mark the ballot himself, the number of ballots cast doesn’t exceed the number of registered voters. And states like Montana are now requiring a signed affidavit to turn in another’s ballot, even your spouse’s. People can study the candidates and ballot issues and mark their ballots at their leisure instead of guessing under pressure in the voting booth. There is a signature required, to compare to the one on the voter rolls, and if you show up at the polls to vote and someone has already turned in “your” ballot, you can vote a provisional ballot and the other will be discarded. Best of all there is a paper copy for vote recounts. I love vote by mail and think it should be the norm. Why pay to staff polling places with long lines and disgusted voters leaving early before voting to make dinner or go to bed?

I have been voting by mail for the last couple of years. A ballot was sent to my home address in early February for our March 17 election. My name was already printed on the return envelope along with a bar code, and I was required to fill out my return address and sign across the sealed envelope flap. I placed my executed ballot in the provided privacy shield (folded paper), inside the sealed envelope.
I mailed my ballot last Thursday (no postage required if mailed in the US). I’ve just checked my supervisor of elections website and my ballot has been received, but not counted. Monday or Tuesday I’ll check again to make sure my votes were counted/recorded.
My ballot envelope will not be opened or scanned until my signature on the outside of the flap is compared with that on file. IF I had decided I wanted to go to my polling place instead, I would have been required to take my mail-in ballot so it could be destroyed before I would be allowed to vote. Whether mailed or not, our ballots here are paper, filled in with a ball point pen, and each ballot is put into a machine to be scanned. If a recount were required, all ballots could be rescanned easily enough.
