I had not been to Colmar since I was 6 years old, so it was time to see it again. Of course I've driven past it many times over the years, but I have to admit that when you are already familiar with Alsace, you don't feel the need to see every town regularly. Of course there is the Alsatian capital of Strasbourg, which is in a category by itself, but frankly if you have seen, say, Riquewihr, you are not going to see much different in Obernai, Mulhouse, Sélestat or Kaysersberg. I chose Colmar this time because I specifically wanted to see the recently renovated Unterlinden Museum, but otherwise I would have been totally happy to stroll through any of those other towns and probably would have taken quite similar pictures. Nevertheless, Alsace remains delightfully different from the rest of France and did not face as much destruction as the towns on the other side of the Rhine, which is certainly why the vast majority of tourists come from Germany.
I found a place to park the car. The area was not yet picturesque but still unmistakably Alsatian.
The carefully controlled colour scheme of the buildings is subtly different from neighbouring Lorraine. In Lorraine, we do not use green or blue for buildings.
Every town always has some grand old places awaiting renovation.
I quickly reached the central area with bigger buildings.
Certain famous store chains known for their modernity in Paris look a bit different here.
Things get prettier and prettier.
