Have any news media in other countries picked up on what horror has visited Australia, specifically Melbourne?
During the busy lunch period a car appeared and started driving fast and 'doing donuts' in the major intersection of the city. The driver hit several pedestrians then swerved into the busy Burke Street Mall and deliberately drove at people, throwing bodies into the air and crushing others.
A TV crew were on a balcony filming an interview with the Lord Mayor. They swung their cameras and recorded the whole event. The police arrived quickly and shot the driver in the arm. He tried to get out of his car and run but 2 bystanders tackled him and made a citizen's arrest, holding him down until the police arrived.
Five people died, including a three-month-old baby boy and 10-year-old girl, and more than 40 people were injured. Five people in hospital are fighting for life.
I know that far more important issues are filling our TV screens at present, but I did not want this tragedy to be be buried while the world waits to see what the First Lady (and I use the term loosely) and daughter wear to the ball.

Yes, Questa. I saw it on several websites: BBC, France24, Guardian.
Like you, I am already sick of seeing Trump et al. and it's only the beginning. Other things are happening in the world!

Questa, I saw it on a travel website. A regular poster let us know what was going on, as it was happening. His wife was at work there. She and her coworkers saw it all happen. She took care of her staff till everyone was able to leave. Two other regulars posted that one's son and another's daughter work in the same area and both witnessed the event.
Because I "know" the first poster from his frequent comments, the news came to me more forcefully than if I'd seen the headlines.

Oh, of course it was on the news here, since France inaugurated the season on killer drivers last July.

Yes, Questa, it was all over various news sites. As you say, it appears such crap as inaugural ballgowns have covered up the Melbourne story.
Any follow-ups on what happened?

It was one of the top stories on NPR radio here. Very tragic and sad.

People can be so wicked, and it is especially so at this time of year.

Saw it on the news and have been trying to contact relatives living in Melbourne. 2 nieces and a nephew in law. Melbourne is massive I know and chances are they are fine, but we haven't been able to speak to any of them. My sister is pulling her hair out. Nothing on the 6pm news so far which is frustrating. Mind you its 5 am in Melbourne atm...

Yes Questa, I saw it on SKY News this morning. The Prime Minister was very cautious with his wording in his announcement. It is another senseless act by a person with less than a peanut for a brain. Bloody bastard.
