In France they have just mentioned that old people (and the usual "immuno-compromised") should be the first in line to get another vaccination.
I'll get my next vaccination and the flu vaccination when I can get them at the same time in a week or so. I don't feel that I need either of them but I have absolutely no valid reason not to get them either. Maybe an extra year or two of life, who knows?

From Mayo Clinic: “High-dose flu vaccines are a type of vaccine approved for people age 65 and older. They can help people in this age group have a stronger immune system response against influenza, commonly called the flu…. Some high-dose flu vaccines include 3 to 4 times as much flu virus antigen — the part of the vaccine that stimulates the immune system — as standard flu vaccines. One flu vaccine recommended for older adults has the same amount of antigen as the standard dose vaccine. But it boosts the immune response by including an ingredient called an adjuvant.” Link

I have to pay closer attention to these things now. When I researched which flu vaccine I should take I found there are several high and low dose versions in the US, mostly made using eggs. One, Flucelvax, is probably fine for those who are allergic to eggs, but because it is sourced from canines, it wouldn’t be appropriate for anyone allergic to mammals.
I had the high dose flu vaccine Fluzone 3 1/2 weeks ago and never felt any kind of reaction.

I’m still debating about the RSV vaccine. I had a case of the actual RSV a year ago. I’m not sure if that’s offering any antibody protection at this point, but because the vaccine is made using mice ovaries, I’m hesitant due to my mammal allergy.

You might get along with Silmo. When I'm in Anghiari, every Thursday evening I go to a program called "Tandem". It pairs native Italian speakers with native English speakers for one-on-one conversations with the aim of helping both improve their grasp of their non-native languages. Usually it's very pleasant and interesting but there's one very strange regular--I'll call him Silmo because that's his name-- and tonight all he wanted to talk about was how dangerous vaccines are and how the new mRNA Covid vaccines in particular will clog your system with lethal antibodies. What a relief when he was swapped out for a nice normal Anghiarese woman who was happy to talk about travel and the weather.

I'm just saying that there are lots of medications that we are told are dangerous if we absorb excessive doses. Why would huge doses of vaccines be different?

Maybe some of us need this higher dose because we have more fragile immune systems, while those who are younger are better able to fight off the flu with a lesser dose. It allows younger people to still receive doses of the vaccine while also saving stronger doses for the elderly.

Actually, I think the stronger vaccines for older folks is because our immune system weakens as we age, so that we don’t have a good enough immune response to the lower dose vaccine. It’s supposed to kick up our immune response to get comparable protection from the vaccine that lower doses give to younger folks with strong immune systems.

I’m hesitant due to my mammal allergy. What is a "mammal allergy"? Are you allergic to any product from a mammal, like dairy products or meat?

Okay -- I see why I had missed all that information, htmb -- you posted it while I was in Canada and I didn't read any forums. It sure sounds like a bummer! It would be good if 1) more doctors knew about it and didn't dismiss people off the bat simply because they hadn't learned about it in medical school 2) some kind of easy contact test was available for touching products so that anybody with the allergy doesn't have to find out through painful experience

I am not sure why / what is going on but just wondered if anyone else had noticed that as they got older their nails grew faster. Weird one I know.

I already mentioned once that my nails were growing too fast, and I recall Kimby saying that she was a bit jealous (I'm pretty sure it was a "random thought of the moment.") And I'm sure we all know that nails continue to grow for a bit after death, where we are all headed.

Actually, I think the dead person’s fingers shrink, making it APPEAR that their nails have grown.

My nails have lost the edges and are not growing back, been like that for months. I reckon I am dying from the ends

I was once told that blood circulation was the reason why fingernails grow faster than toenails. Maybe something similar happens as we get older (doesn't blood pressure tend to go up later in life?) My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

Mine has but my doctor told me that it drops when you get past 90. I’ll report back in due course... Mine has too and I hope I am reporting back with you So its not just me re nails ... I like to keep mine short , probably my years as a nurse, and its a pain in the ass having to keep cutting them, but they do look healthy so I guess I wont worry too much.

On another note ... my eyelashes are getting thinner and sparser seemingly by the week .

My toe nails have become thicker I know that! Trimming my finger nails is easy but I need bolt cutters for my toe nails these days Maybe it's because we no longer have a bath, just a walk-in shower..so I don't soak my feet any more. Too much information? I don't have to shave my legs any more there's nothing to shave. My chin, however seems to sprout a new hair daily. Out it comes (ouch). My eyelashes are thinner too. The hair on my head is still thick, altho my grey hair is coarser than my hair was when I was younger. Another thing...I used to catch the bus into town and happily walk around for hours...zig-zagging across the city (usually at speed..my 'shopping walk' was formidable). Now I'm a bit slower and only manage a couple of hours before I give in and come home...no stamina. If I've been to donate blood (every 16 weeks) I have to go straight home afterwards, instead of meeting a friend for coffee or going shopping. Falling to bits so she is....

I've not looked back to see if it's been mentioned but I suspect my ears are getting bigger. I can still bite my toenails but don't any more as they are getting too thick.
