They are indeed brilliant in both the writing and the acting, with the background of the character and the development of the story gradually revealed so obliquely and cleverly. But though with just one person talking direct to the camera, so no whizzbang melodramatics, I'm not sure "gentle" is quite the word for some of the subject matter that's revealed. But there are plenty of characteristic Bennett touches in how his writing can tell you so much about the character in such tiny social and verbal details, and the rhythms of speech - as in "He's been had up for exposing himself in Sainsbury's doorway. As Mother said, Tesco, you could understand it." I can see why they're on the schools set text lists for Eng Lit. Yes, Htmb - Prunella Scales as Basil Fawlty's wife. The video is honest and heartwarming as it introduces Prunella as she has the rotten luck of Alzheimer's. She is a feisty lass and does not let this dreaded disease get her down. I just love the way they find any excuse for a nice glass of wine! If you go on YouTube - watch it from the 1st video. They do have their own narrowboat but regularly hire another when sailing far and wide. You will also find the boys of Silver Fox on YouTube under FoxesAfloat. Fox is their married name and the narrowboat is a stunning silver and black.

Vera has been running on PBS again recently. We used to enjoy her years ago, and watched hoping to enjoy her again during the pandemic drought of video content for non-streamers, but found she doesn’t stand up well to the likes of Baptiste and other amateur detectives.
In a related story, CeCe, the genetic genealogist who helps police detectives solve cold cases wrapped up her inaugural season. Too many gratuitous shots of the pretty lady, slow pacing and predictable outcome (the bad guy gets busted), mean that if season two comes along, I won’t be watching - unless the library is STILL closed.

Kimby, please tell me if this 'strange' dictation took place during your video. As the film is running, a voice comes on describing what the actors are doing, where they are, what their features are expressing. After a few minutes of viewing I got cheesed off with the interruption. Then thought maybe it is an added feature for sightless people. They can hear the movie but don't know what the scene looks like. Do you think I'm right or what???

Yes, that is the version for blind people. I have even seen it on cartoon shows on television sometimes. Even though these versions are usually activated only through one's remote control, there are always a few showings for 'everybody' so that people without sophisticated equipment can benefit.
Versions for the deaf need more creativity because you have the basic subtitles for dialogue, but you have different colour subtitles if somebody is talking off screen and a third colour to describe other things happening ('there is a gunshot' 'an explosion can be heard in the distance' 'romantic music begins to play' etc.). Every now and then when I go to the cinema, I find myself in the special deaf presentation and I wear myself out reading everything since it is impossible to ignore. At least blind people receive headsets that nobody else can hear.

last night I watched 3 episodes of Hudson and Rex. This is a new incarnation of Rex from the original Austrian Kommissar Rex series (1994-2004). Watching more episodes tonight, i see that they retained one of the running gags from the original Austrian series -- the fact that Rex is always stealing sandwiches at the police station. And just like in the Austrian original, the victim starts buying an extra sandwich every day so that Rex will have one. I never saw enough episodes of the Italian adaptation to know if Rex also ate Italian sandwiches.

I finished The Luminaries last night. Did anyone else go all the way through it? I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's not something I'd urge someone else to watch, but I don't think it was bad either. Since I barely started the book before setting it aside, I knew nothing about the plot when watching the show. That jumping back and forth in time and in point of view thing can be a disaster, but I felt it worked well in this production. It was well acted, too, although one review faulted the director for not giving Anna (played by Eve Hewson) enough to do. I'm not sure I agree, because somehow Hewson made Anna a very sympathetic character. Do stay away from this show if you dislike mystical elements used as plot devices.

I watched the first episode of Secret Mediterranean with Trevor MacDonald. Excellent programme which included a fascinating visit to the headquarters of the French Foreign Legion. I'd like to know more of them.

Mick can you tell me on what TV program? My IPTV gives me every channel of every country but I've got to know where to look - otherwise I'd give up after the 50th one! I know that the French Foreign Legion can be located along the Canal du Midi - Not sure if it was at Capestang or Castelnaudary….

There are many fascinating programmes about the Foreign Legion all over YouTube. Plenty of them are in English and come to the same conclusion -- many of the candidates know that they deserve to be punished and this is the place for it. However, unlike prison, they actually get a chance at a better life if they succeed.
