But they teach you French! That is one of the attractions. I'm not sure I'd have much use for whatever is the French equivalent of "You 'orrible little man!" Hang on a minute, though... I have picked up some interesting colloquial French from watching Engrenages and the like, so you never know.

I finished Stateless last p.m. It did not disappoint. I came away with an even greater appreciation of Yvonne Strahovski's talent. Cate Blanchett's role is minor but so well done. Demonic and downright creepy, she really nails it. With only six episodes it covers a lot of bases. It's quite dark so be prepared.

I watched the first episode last night & was riveted, positively riveted. Yes on Yvonne Strahovski & how very talented she is. Apparently the show was produced and written by Cate Blanchett. I'll have to double check tonight when I watch episode two on whether she wrote an episode(s) or the whole thing. Impressive, at any rate. The woman playing Strahovski's sister was driving me crazy until I figured out who she is --Marta Dusseldorp, whom I knew from the syrupy Australian soap, A Place to Call Home.

I remember when the events were going on IRL. Cornelia Rau was the victim of some bureaucratic foul-ups on which this series is based

That is part of what makes the series so affecting. I watched episode two last night and one incident paralleled the kind of police (or in this case, immigration officers) brutality that has been in the news so much lately. And of course the bureaucratic indifference &/or corruption we all suspect is well depicted.

Guess what? I finally watched episode 1 of Game of Thrones about 6 weeks ago. Today I finally watched episode 2. When is it supposed to get interesting?

I congratulate you Kerouac on even sticking to it for 5 minutes. I found it unwatchable and immediately thought there must be something wrong with me as everyone else seems to be fainting in coils over it.

I think that quite a few people have a fascination with Strong Men making Big Plans and having a testosterone battle. And that's how people like Donald Trump got elected.

We binge-watched a show we never watched when it was airing - 30 Rock season 2 - and were struck by several very topical references including pulling down statues in public parks and police violence: “There’s a man with a gun!” “It’s OK, he isn’t a policeman.” Almost eerie foreshadowing of 2020, released in 2007. www.imdb.com/title/tt0496424/

I have only seen a few episodes of 30 Rock over the years since I don't think it was ever shown in France except perhaps on minor cable outlets -- after all, the subject is about as American as you can get and very difficult to comprehend by locals. But I always thought it was quite interesting and portrayed what I knew of American media activities pretty accurately.

I think that quite a few people have a fascination with Strong Men making Big Plans and having a testosterone battle. And that's how people like Donald Trump got elected. A couple of generations ago when we as parents had concerns about kids and TV shows, we were reassured that "they know it is only make-believe" Even the experts kept fairly quiet but later, with the more life-like imagery on screen, sleep troubles became more common. It gets harder to convince a 13 year old that terrible things won't hurt them if they are watching murder and mayhem many hours a day. Knowing what is Real and what is fabrication is the sign of an adult who is of sound mind. Maybe all politicians should be screened before elections

Watched the last episode of Stateless tonight. Talk about a heaping helping of despair!
I'm not complaining about the show, which is overall excellent, but pretty devastating. The acting is fabulous.

I am a huge fan of testosterone movies. Schwarzy, Stallobe, JCVD, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagall, even Dolf Lundgren are actors whose movies i like to watch. Usually no scenario, sometimes humor, and a lot of action. I would never vote for populists and make a clear distinction with reality. Maybe there are other factors like reading, education, etc....

We’ve started watching NARCOS, a three season series that aired in the USA from 2015-2017 It’s based on the true story of Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar. Plenty of killings and gratuitous violence, wrapped up in a history lesson. Good performances, too. www.imdb.com/title/tt2707408/

I am so happy. My video fare has been endless episodes of Garden Rescue with the six episodes of Stateless strung out over @10 days. I finished Stateless last night and now wanted fun fluff -- preferably fun fluff with costumes.
Cursed was on one of those lists of new costume drama, so I sat down to watch it with my usual open-mindedness. (i.e., "Oh gawd how bad is this shit going to be?")
I'm so pleasantly surprised! Yes, of course there is some of the hokiness built into any show involving magic. But this centers around the legend of Arthur, a subject that still bears mining. On the basis of having only watched the first episode, I'll go ahead & say that it's much better than Merlin which starred Colin Morgan. Not that Merlin was terrible, but I thought it was for a young crowd -- as young as 12 and 13. This show also stars teens (although the guy playing Arthur looks too much like a grown man), but Merlin (wait till you see who plays him!) is an adult in it. It takes place in the reign of Uther Pendragon & involves the lady of the lake. (Well, anyway as far as I can figure so far.)
All of the special effects don't always work. Tip: if you're a teenage girl and your arm is grabbed by a (poorly animated) giant slavering wolf, just punch it in the snout and it will let go. But I don't want to pick it to bits because I very much want it to turn out to be good entertainment. So far there has been lots of fire, a good bit of violence, and some suspense. Not a bad start.

We’ve started watching NARCOS Watched all them on a DVD set a friend gave to me. Enjoyed it. On a point of trivia, one of the lead actors, Pedro Pascal, is the Mandalorian, a well rated series.

Ha ha, there is truth to what you say, but I am even more disturbed that there are so many murders in such a small place. In the big city, it would be normal.

Aaaaah! At last someone sane has asked the same question I have over the years! Kerouac - you have spotted the problem! So many murders in such a small place. Almost as bad as Shetland. Who TF would want to live in either atmosphere. It's a situation that we in Africa might contend with every day but save us from the world so far away!

Nevertheless, as I have written in the past, it is a series that appeals to me because there are no chases, by car or otherwise, and very little gunfire or else just to kill the victim at the start, in the privacy of someone's home. Same with Vera and other similiar British series.

To me, a big city person most of my life, these people all look alike. I've never watched the show you mention, but I have a theory that some casting directors unconsciously have a bias for certain physical traits or general looks. Once you notice it, you'll see that almost everyone in a given production has a short upper lip, or a certain kind of nose, for instance. In discussing shows with friends, you'll sometimes find that others will comment that they had trouble telling all the men apart in a particular production, or laughingly point out that all the women must have used the same box of Clairol.

But let's face it, there is very little diversity in most of these rural areas and it is the same gene pool. So it would be incorrect to show them differently.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear someone is watching it. It got good reviews from the critics, as far as I can remember, and overall I thought it was a wonderful series. There was some gratuitous shock value stuff at the very beginning of the series, mostly having to do with Nucky Thompson's girlfriend -- pointless full frontal nudity -- but it settles down after that. I was already a Steve Buscemi fan, so had no problem with him in the main role. Almost everyone in the cast is excellent and by the end of the show I was a huge Shea Whigham fan. So true about the music. I predict you'll be on tunefind and youtube so you can enjoy some of it over again. Edited to add a pee ess ~ The casting for the real-life gangsters in the show is phenomenal. I just did a Search & see that I did all of my burbling about Boardwalk in the non-series TV thread, probably because the series thread didn't exist then: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/search/results?captcha_id=captcha_search&who_at_least_one=7&what_exact_phrase=Boardwalk+Empire&display_as=0&search=Search

Thanks!. I’m finding it funny and a good escape. Just wish I was better at understanding the French. I understand words here and there, but the dialogue is pretty fast and there’s a lot of slang.

Family Business does look amusing and super well made.
I am now five episodes into Cursed, so I must like it. It didn't grab me immediately, and I'd say its major flaw for me is that I can't get sufficiently invested into the main characters. They are both good-looking, of course, but both seem just a tad too old for the characters they're playing, especially Devon Terrell, with his chiseled handsomeness. Katherine Langford can get away with playing a teen, as she somewhat resembles a plump-cheeked Vivian Leigh. She is certainly not terrible, I just wish she inspired more identification. Terrell seems to be the better actor, but a better script might inspire better acting from both of them. Several other characters are well-cast and quite good, especially Gustaf Skarsgård as Merlin is infinitely charming, and I find myself waiting for his appearances. Shalom Brune-Franklin is making a great Morgana so far. At any rate, lovers of fantasy who find themselves with nothing to watch should give Cursed a chance.
