Oh, thanks, Cheery. Reading the book felt like a slog to me, and even though I finished it, I retain nothing about it. Thus, I was going to skip the show, but will not definitely look at it based on your recommendation.

At any rate, lovers of fantasy who find themselves with nothing to watch should give Cursed a chance. Will do - thank you

Yaay! One thing I didn't mention that is very nice is the title work and the animated illustrations that stitch scenes together. They apparently were done by a design team & very much approved by Frank Miller, who illustrated the book on which the tv show is based. I rather prefer the tv illustrations and love how they're used to replace stuff like chase scenes. And that comic book vibe is often richly apparent how the regular scenes are shot, with interesting angles, strong light/shadow contrast, etc.

I've only watched one episode...basically the colourful sets and fabulous clothes have me. I'm struggling with Cursed...altho I have only watched one episode. Reminds me too much of BBC's Merlin...which I hated. Jeff seems to like it tho...

Colorful sets? Fabulous clothes? Okay, I'm hooked!
Cursed does not start off strong, but it's definitely better than that other Merlin.

Tried A Suitable Boy and just couldn't.
That left me with nothing, since I'd finished Cursed -- which had a pretty good finale to the season. I wanted more fantasy, but not super heroes. I'd have settled for a nice costume drama, but decided to give Carnival Row a peek. The reason I didn't watch it last year when it came out was because I was sure I'd hate it. What a pleasant surprise! I've now watched two episodes and really like it. One of the things that I thought would make it terrible was Cara Delevingne, but she is quite good.
I was into "the fae" with Cursed, but this is quite different and probably more for grownups.

Well! I can't believe I almost gave Carnival Row a pass. I love it -- love it, I tell you!
I also can't believe that I mentioned Cursed and Carnival Row in the same post, as Carnival Row is leagues above in acting, concept, sets, etc. (the sets -- ooooooo). And the fae have wings, really really cool wings.

I'm not that enamoured of A Suitable Boy...its the costumes, music and colours that I like...I watch it whilst doing other stuff... A second series of His Dark Materials should be on in the autumn....quite looking forward to that.

There is a 20-minute soap opera on France 2 just after the evening news, and for the past week or so it has started with an incrustation of information saying "confinement D-12" or whatever. So I confess that I am hooked on who will live and who will die of coved-19 on this show.

Yes, more of His Dark Materials would be great.
You all probably don't want to hear any more about this, but too bad. Carnival Row is great! I watched the last episode of season one tonight & it was hugely satisfying. The Victorian/steampunk vibe is wonderful and the monster is truly monstrous. The makeup on the non-humans is perfect and I say again: wings -- so good!
My one gripe is Orlando Bloom's voice. What the hell does he have against just out and out speaking? I have to strain to hear and understand his low whisper. What's with that?!
Side note: I always think when watching Jared Harris that he is such a superb actor. No matter the part, he becomes it. After the show was over I looked him up. His father is Richard Harris -- one of the biggest hams of all time.

rotting-despair-of-english-countryside Well, gosh ~ who wouldn't enjoy watching that?! Sorry, shouldn't laugh. Also, the good old Independent in its headline either deliberately or sloppily misquoted the line from the article, which is in actuality: “rotting through disrepair”. But in fairness, the Guardian article immediately turned me off the series, whereas the Independent one made me want to watch it.

We finished Season One of NARCOS last night and are pleased to have Season Two in our possession to continue watching the extended war between two DEA agents and the Colombian cocaine empire of Pablo Escobar.
Much of it is in Spanish with subtitles, which makes it more authentic (and also more tiring to follow) and the actors playing Escobar and the lead DEA agent are almost perfect physical representations of their characters.
The insight into the Colombian government’s response (non-response) to the horrific bloodletting of the turf battle between the Medellin and Cali cartels is fascinating to watch. “Family man” and former hero of the little guys, Pablo Escobar, descends slowly into a ruthless enforcer of loyalty and blind acceptance of his dictates to kill his enemies. His narcissistic paranoid behavior reminds me of someone...

Not sure if this belongs here or the Documentary thread, but putting it here because of bixa’s stated love for period costumes and sets. Just watched a 2-part series on PBS that recreated the Victoria and Albert wedding. The first episode researched the gown, the venue, the foods for the wedding breakfast and the 300# wedding cake, and located modern-day artisans, chefs, musicians and tailors who could create replicas. The 2nd episode takes us through a re-creation of the event with actors. This wedding was historic not only for uniting England and Germany, but also for introducing the world to the idea of a white wedding gown and a huge tiered wedding cake, traditions that still rule the wedding world in many countries. Having watched three seasons of VICTORIA, this was a nice historical complement. Just checked IMDb, and apoarently it aired in 2018 as a “TV movie”, so not created as a “series” www.imdb.com/title/tt9424514/

Oooo ~ thanks, Kimby!
I knew that detail about the wedding dress, but not about the cake. I wonder if wedding planners around the world have little shrines to Victoria.
Just so you know what a mental midget I really am, I sometimes watch "Say Yes to the Dress". It allows me lots of harmless judging and takes my breath away with what people are willing to spend on a one-occasion dress. It also makes clear that the wedding is all about the bride and that the groom is less than secondary.

Every bride is a princess. If she wants to be.
I chose to be a woodland nymph in a tea length ivory frock with a garland of flowers in my hair.
This type of wedding can “take” also. Celebrated 36 years last week.

I should warn you that the historian-narrator never shuts up, and they don’t perform the wedding as a seamless take. My only complaint.

I've seen your wedding picture, Kimby, and you were exquisite!
Mick, tea length is a skirt that hits @mid-calf.
I'll give it a try, even with the narrator. I watch an episode of Garden Rescue every single day & the narrator sounds like Elmer Fudd's little sister.

I need to go over to Where Words Collide once I figure out a polite way to ask the Brits if the GR narrator has a speech impediment, or if that's just one of the many funny ways they talk over there. I looked her up and her website shows that voice-overs, narration, etc. is her career.

It's been many years since BBC English was the only voice you heard and more regional and 'normal' voices came in. The problem is that there are some that can be annoying and/or verging on the incomprehensible. Hers is understandable but to me it isn't such an appealing voice. However, the surprise for me was the change in Charlie Dimmock.

It has been the best part of 30 years since Ground Force. I doubt if any of us is quite as svelte as we were then. As for the narrator, I don't care for the her style either, but that's partly because the text itself is so formulaic and yet they try to inject a bit of over-dramatisation and slightly forced "personality" into it. I haven't noticed a speech impediment as such; it's a more relaxed accent than old-fashioned RP, not one I can place regionally (whereas Charlie Dimmock is a Hampshire as ever, and the Rich brothers obviously Welsh, and please can they find some other adjective besides "lovely").
