Sofia Helin (who played the autistic Swedish detective Saga Norén in The Bridge) has been busy. Only a few weeks ago I was watching her play (in English) an equally obsessive archaeologist in the Australian series Mystery Road (all about an Aboriginal cop dealing with drug smuggling in the remote and eery-feeling far north of Australia). And now, in The Same Sky, she's playing a British-Swedish intelligence official in 1970s Berlin targeted by an East German "Romeo" agent - so she's acting in English and German as well (on the strength of one episode, looks good, though it may be too reminiscent of Deutschland 83 for some). Oooo -- y'all are watching stuff that makes you use your brains!
I'm once again series-less since Raised by Wolves ended. Luckily, I was a little behind in The Great British Bake Off, so have been playing catch-up with that & with An Extra Slice.
Yesterday I watched the first episode of The Other One. It is a farce, something I hate, plus a terrible waste of Siobhan Finneran. Really, a terrible waste of the other good actors, too, plus my time.
As far as what I have to look forward too, His Dark Materials starts the same day (Nov. 3) as the US presidential election, appropriately enough. If it turns out that I don't have to kill myself that day, I'll happily anticipate the return of The Crown on Nov. 15.

Is that the series where Donald Trump declares himself king and has all of the others "locked up" as promised?

No. I think that one is called "Me First", or maybe "The Fall of Any Hope for This Benighted Nation".
I watched the first episode of The Duchess and did not find it terrible. That's either because it's not terrible, or because my druggie-like desire to be entertained has eroded my powers of discrimination.

Okay, I confess that I watched the first season of Riverdale and am now watching season 2.
Now that Miss Grundy has been murdered, who's next?

I'm so glad you're enjoying it, Lugg. Well, if enjoying is the right word for that feeling of being totally entertained, admiring the acting, design, etc., while at the same time viewing with a sense of dread.

I still haven't taken the plunge into watching Harlots yet but based on your unbridled enthusiasm and good taste Lugg, I may give it a go soon. I am also going to give The Duchess a go based on Bixa's thumbs up. I'm so amped about the new season of The Crown that I found myself re-watching some of the last episodes of Season 3 just to get primed. I forgot how much I loved Helena Bonham Carter's Princess Margaret portrayal.

Ohhhhh ~ thank you, Cheery!
The only series I have going right now are GBBO and GBBO, An Extra Slice. Thus, I keep casting about on youtube to see if I can find entertaining historical stuff. I just watched the first episode of this today & enjoyed it. I believe this link will roll over into the three subsequent chapters, plus there is a link to the whole thing in the sidebar ~

I don't know what to think! Thirty minutes into episode 1, season 2 of His Dark Materials, I realized I was not in the least bit engaged by it. *disappointed*

The books are better. I'm waiting to see how it goes...it seems to diverge quite a lot from the books altho it touches down at key points to keep the progression sort of true...if you know what I mean.

Just finished the Queen's Gambit on Netflix. I enjoyed it and I am not a chess player. Also watching Unbecoming - good to see High Grant as a 'baddie'. It's high quality stuff.

I am in a frenzy of impatience for The Crown's new season, too.
Appropriately, today is Charles' birthday, as he finally joins me & two other anyporters in our age of wisdom.

Just knew he was a Scorpio!! I got into a discussion with a friend of mine a couple of evenings ago about The Crown. Both he and his wife did not care for Helena Bonham Carter being cast as Princess Margaret compared to the previous actress who portrayed her. They had no dispute with Bonham Carter's acting skills but thought that she was "miscast". After thinking about it I had to agree. One thing, I made a point of watching the last episode of Season 3 and the ending scene with Princess Anne being summoned to the Palace and her driving in her roadster singing along to Elton John's "Starman" and humming it as she ascends the stairs and what ensues. Chilling!

Season 2 of Balthazar started yesterday on telly. A french pathologist who talks to his clients and is in love with the captain leading the inquiries.

I have never watched Balthazar but I read that in real life Tomer Sisley and Hélène de Fougerolles can't stand each other, but apparently it makes their on screen repulsion-attraction more believable. Also, it was season 3 that started yesterday.
Tonight I am watching an episode of Meurtres à... -- this time in Cayenne.

Chilling!I have to disagree. The actress playing the younger Margaret was very good and also physically resembled the real Margaret. But really, I think Helena Bonham Carter did a great job, despite being so well-known that we inevitably become too strict about whether or not she looks enough like Margaret. Thanks for the tip. I will now re-watch that episode. Speaking of good casting, they nailed it with the actress playing Anne.

One thing, I made a point of watching the last episode of Season 3 Well! One of us watched the wrong episode of Season 3 and it was not I. I checked and double checked and the last episode of that season was #10, in which Anne does not appear. No, #10, Cri de Coeur, was brilliantly dominated by Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Colman. Although Bonham Carter has more screen time, it was Colman who eventually got my tear ducts going in her meeting with Harold Wilson (Jason Watkins) and then kept them a-flowing in her meeting with Bonham Carter after Margaret's cri de coeur. That said, Helena Bonham Carter was absolutely stellar in this episode, showing what a consummate actor she is in her willingness to play the part as it needed to be played, with no regard for her personal vanity. For anyone who cares, here is a zippy overview of the series ~

Agreed I liked Helena BC's portrayal of Margaret. Hell after Season 1 I was also sympathizing with Philip. I also thought the actress playing Camilla did a good job. Wholesome upper crust English and smoldering that's tough to pull off!

Biddy, good call on the Camilla casting! Emerald Fennel's comment on being cast as Camilla: “I absolutely love Camilla, and am very grateful that my teenage years have well prepared me for playing a chain-smoking serial snogger with a pudding bowl haircut.”
The one gripe I have, and it feels like heresy to say so, is that Olivia Colman's portrayal of the queen is too unrelievedly severe. Admittedly, the script has her saying some pretty mean things, especially to poor Charles, but I wish that had been worked around. The real queen seems to be rather lively & to enjoy a good laugh, traits which Olivia Colman seems to share. Those aspects came out in seasons 1 and 2, but were thoroughly squelched in season three, with Colman almost always frowning.

I think I will opt for The Crown next given its fan base on here.
