Little American girl was okay with the accents because she doesn't know any better. Admittedly, I kept the closed captions on in case any words or phrases got past me. The boy who plays Lesley Manvville's granddaughter's boyfriend is the real thing -- Bill Jones is apparently native to that area. I've only seen the first episode so far and am hooked. I had to pay close attention because so many people are introduced in that episode, with many & various ties among them. Luckily, The Guardian is doing in-depth re-caps on each episode. So, after dipping into the Wikipedia entry on the '84-'85 strike, I read the Guardian's recap. Side note missed by The Guardian in its "notes & observations" ~~ Joanna Froggatt is no stranger to Sherwood, Sherwood Forest anyway, as she hung out there a few centuries ago. www.imdb.com/title/tt0787985/?ref_=vp_close

Just for some background into the tensions in that area that are long remembered from the strike the question often is/was, why some went on strike and some didn't, thus often splitting families -
"A number of reasons have been advanced for the lack of support by the Nottinghamshire miners for the strike.
David Amos argues that Nottinghamshire miners reacted in the same way in 1984 as they did to the unofficial strikes in 1969 and 1970, both of which saw blockading of Nottinghamshire pits by striking miners from South Yorkshire and both of which were regarded as unconstitutional under NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) rules. As the Nottinghamshire collieries had attracted displaced miners from Scotland and the north-east in the 1960s, it has been argued that they were reluctant to strike to stop pit closures when there had been no action to save their home pits from closure.
A large Polish community in Nottinghamshire had been alienated by Scargill's policy of supporting the Communist government in Poland against the Solidarity union, which the NUM previously had supported. At some pits, most miners initially refused to cross picket lines formed by Welsh miners (who weren't aggressive) but returned to work when more aggressive pickets arrived from Yorkshire. Nottinghamshire NUM executive Henry Richardson argued that the Nottinghamshire miners would have probably voted for strike had they not been subjected to so much intimidation within days of the walk-out in Yorkshire, which prompted many to defy the Yorkshire pickets as a matter of principle. ----- this was my reason for continuing to work.

Thanks for that, Mark. My perception after a little reading elsewhere was that those who crossed that particular picket line did so because the strike itself was not allowed to be their decision. Your statement about the blockading of the Nottinghamshire pits by outsiders being against the NUM constitution would be a major factor as well. Further reading sure makes it look as though Scargill's real agenda was playing a long game for his political career.

So last night I watched Episode 1 of Series 2 of The outlaws ( which I think I have posted about previously ?) I started with trepidation as Series 1 was one of my highlights in the past years TV viewing and I was uncertain if the next series would live up to the former. No worries there - within minutes I was transported back; the characters are all the same ... the story line follows on from Series 1 and it is just as clever , funny and the writing, characters and casting remain brilliant. Here is a review from Series 1 which hopefully does not contain spoilers - www.thereviewgeek.com/theoutlaws-s1review/Here is a review from Series 2 start - www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/jun/05/the-outlaws-series-two-review-

I watched season 1 of Misfits. A bit unsettling but excellent for people who need to work on some of those British accents. It's old (2009).

So last night I watched Episode 1 of Series 2 of The outlaws ( which I think I have posted about previously ?) Admittedly, I have not read your two links above, BUTT ~~ because you've mentioned Outlaws so glowingly & more than once, I figured I'd better learn more. Christopher Walken??!!! Did you tell us he was in it? Also, didn't know until your last post that the show was funny. Looked up the trailer for season one & am now convinced that I have to watch this, so thanks for promoting it.

You have done a much better job than I did. But yes - it is very funny. Christopher Walken doers play his part very well . Lots of great actors including not just Steven Merchant and the divine Eleanor Tomlinson, Richard E Grant etc but some new / lesser known talent too.

Yes, the young woman who plays Rani is outstanding. Really, everyone is perfect. I watched the first episode of the first season last night & loved it. Was a little annoyed because I realized that the trailer gave away one of the plot surprises.
Unfortunately, I watched it while eating and had my mouth full when Diane says, "You're probably wondering about feces" and Frank immediately replies, "You read my mind!"
I'm laughing about it all over again just typing the lines.
Edited to add ~ just watched episode two and, just like last night, I think the music chosen is almost worth the price of admission. So clever!

Yesterday afternoon we settled comfortably to watch another Magrait with Michael Gambon in the lead. As the credits rolled a name caught my eye - Brenda Blethyn of Vera fame. I rolled back the whole movie to see what she looked like in her roll as Rose the wife of a bar keeper and night club owner. Only then did I recognise her in her "younger skin"...

I watched the new Britbox production of Why Didn't They Ask Evans? which has apparently already been made 5 or 6 times over the years, but it was new to me, so that was fine. It's an idiosyncratic work by Agatha Christie without Poirot or Marple for once, although some of the filmed versions have thrown in Miss Marple for the hell of it. I am a bit confused, though, because IMDb and the various British reviews say it is in 3 episodes, but the version that I saw had 4 episodes, so they must have split it up differently. Not really hard to do because it moves pretty slowly since they clearly did not have to rush things along. This can be either pleasant or frustrating. I confess there were a few times when I just felt "get on with it!" but Will Poulter and Lucy Boynton had good chemistry, so it was not at all an ordeal.

I enjoyed "Why didnt they Ask Evans". Last night we watched "The Scapegoat" a Daphne du Maurier dark comic thriller. The ending was a cliff-hanger and not until the last moment do we feel relieved the good guy won in the end.

We are watching The Beatles: Get Back, a 3-part 468 minute documentary that follows the several weeks leading up to the Beatles final performance on the roof of their Apple building. We get to see them interact with each other as they compose songs in real time while we watch. Though the pacing seems a bit slow, it is fascinating to watch their process and get a feeling for their real personalities. And in the case of Yoko Ono, who sits at John’s elbow for almost the whole first hour without saying a word or even registering a facial expression, lack of personality. www.imdb.com/title/tt9735318/Update: The second installment was really hard to watch. The band is on the verge of breaking up, the song-writing is hitting roadblocks and after George walks out, John and Paul, and to a lesser extent Ringo, get really silly, mugging for the camera and singing silly old songs off-key and with harsh strained voices. And, worse, Yoko suddenly grows a personality and it isn’t pretty. Long sequences of her wailing into the microphone. We were on the verge of giving up when George returned and Billy Preston was invited to sit in at the electric piano for the recording sessions and suddenly things got good again. Looking forward to the third segment which should include the entire rooftop concert, the last time they performed together.

The latest series that has appeared on Britbox/ITV is quite an old one. Doctor Foster is a British psychological thriller television series that first debuted on the BBC One on 9 September 2015. There are 10 episodes which will keep me entertained for evening viewing for a week or more. Last night we were kept on the edge as one episode finished, so I immediately had to watch the next one so that I didn't lie awake wondering what the heck Dr.Foster was going to plan next.

Talking of doctors the excellent Dr Blake Mysteries set in 1950’s Melbourne and Murdoch Mysteries set in 19th century Toronto are two great programmes but they air first thing in the morning when I don’t have time or inclination to sit and watch the box. Shame they aren’t on in the evening when I can watch and concentrate.

I watched those about 5 years ago and they were very good TV watching series. We have got to the end of the first series in Doctor Foster and tonight will see how her life changes now that all the hysterics and drama of her divorce are over.

We watched it several weeks ago based on our architect's recommendation. I disagree with some of your comments simply because it not meant to be scripted so, yes, there are slow portions. What I liked the most was that it is set in real time, non-rehearsed and meant for the audience to see more of what the process of producing a live recording session is all about. Different shots panning in on what everyone in the room is doing. Yoko Ono's silence is exactly what she should be doing and is not meant to be a participant. Enter Billy Preston on keyboards and one can feel the electricity and genius of George Martin bringing him in for the recording and final performance.

Marvel has definitely made a mark in the world of television series. After watching Misfits which portrayed a group of delinquents with superpowers they don't understand or control and don't always use in nice ways, now I am watching The Boys where the world is populated with all sorts of people with super powers. They are big media figures and cities fight to hire them as the municipal superhero. They are also not very nice people, which explains the 18 rating on my DVD. I've only seen two episodes so far, but things are not looking good for the world.

I'm looking forward to the concert, which I believe is shown in its entirety.
I'm glad you liked it Casi, and for some of the same reasons I like it. But I think the editors could have gotten rid of SOME of the smirking Lennon face shots and bad renditions of off-topic old songs. Maybe it's what they HAD to do to get in the composing spirit. But I didn't need to see ALL of it! And Yoko was much more charming sitting quietly than screeching into a microphone. The scenes with Linda McCartney's daughter Heather were quite charming and humanizing.

The concert on the rooftop was definitely worth the wait. And now the catchy tune and lyrics of Get Back are going round and round in my head. Earworm material, for sure!
The two young bobbies tasked with trying to halt the “disturbance of the peace” were in an unenviable position, but what a story they had to tell their kids and grandkids!

Finally watching season 4 of This is Us. It’s been a couple years since we watched Season 3, and with a show that jumps around in time, it’s hard to know what’s going on, or even if we’ve already seen this season…. Still love these characters. Mr. Kimby is tiring of all the “contrived drama”…

Watched final five episodes of Doctor Foster. It was a gripping series and had me on the edge of my seat at times but for horrible reasons. She is a woman scorned and by crikey does she pay back in spades. The punishment was she set out to destroy not only her husband but his new wife who was the husband stealer. She drives him to attempted suicide in front of his son but manages to get him off the thundering traffic on the freeway by offering him a drug overdose in a hotel room. Of course she stops him just in time but in the meantime the whole debacle ends with their son walking off into the sunset. I didnt blame him but it was a sad ending and left me wondering if they couldn't have done something better to appease our palpitating hearts.

I am watching a series on Netflix, Click Bait. It's kind of a takeoff on Catfish but more intricate and intriguing. I am loving it.

It did occur to me they had a trigger for a third series right there, but Suranne Jones had other things to do.

I think it would be better when reporting on any episode or season of a tv show to NOT include spoilers. All of us appear to watch even very old shows sometimes and it would be much nicer to go into them not knowing what is going to happen.
