Only one episode left of The Handmaid’s Tale Season Three. It’s been very dark this season. Mainly because the evil that is Gilead has permeated our heroine. Mr. Kimby and I love to speculate on how the creators will wrap this story up. Mr. Kimby thinks everyone will cross into Canada and live happily ever after. I think Nick will lead the resistance and re-take America. We’ll see. (In about 2 years when Season 4 arrives in our library...) We are now several episodes into Handmaid Season 4. Wow, is it dark. And Elisabeth Moss is SO GOOD at showing "all the feels" (as my nibling would say). I am hoping for a happy ending for June, Hannah, Nicole and June's long-suffering husband, Luke.

Anyone else watching or has watched Season Three of My Brilliant Friend? I had trouble staying interested in the first episode of this season, but stuck with it. We all know that first episodes of new seasons have to bring us up to speed and draw us in. At any rate, I've gotten up to episode four, which I watched last night. Damn! The pacing, the cinematography that makes us look and not look away, the little treats, such as the views of Florence and Naples, the suffocating truths presented -- it is all why we read, why we see movies, why we seek out good tv. I'm going to maybe sound simple-minded saying this, but this fourth episode is why I finally understand why Ferrante is considered a feminist. Obviously the inequalities of women's life situations have been presented throughout the series. But since they're all framed and couched in a particular time period, I have seen them more as historical presentation. Admittedly, after giving it a try, I simply could not make myself go further than the first few chapters in the first of the Neapolitan novels. Attack me if you will, but for me it had the same flaw I find in literature written in Spanish, i.e., detail to the point of abusive tedium. This impatience with the style means that I have never truly read Ferrante. But if the fourth episode is any indication, she has zeroed in with laser intensity on the lives women lead or are expected to lead. For those of you who have had the commitment to read more of Ferrante's work, you may be interested in this ~ www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/01/21/women-on-the-verge

Been watching a 3 part series about the disappearance of Malaysian Airways MH370. Riveting stuff and they still don’t know why nor have they found the crashed plane. They may start searching again soon.

Who was it who recommended Prehistoric Planet? Was that you, Mick?
Whoever it was ~ thank you! I watched the first installment last night and was amazed at how incredibly real it all seemed. The person who recommended it here mentioned AI, I believe. Whew! It's more real than real life! Lots of tension and suspense in the show, too -- it's excellent.

Although still watching Frost - good amount of series following on from one another in the storyline, it gets a bit heavy when the murders involve children. To lighten the evenings TV watching we have started enjoying Julie Walters in her train journeys called Coastal Railways. It was on Channel 4 -8pm but we are watching on Britbox. I guess it was filmed some time ago but so enjoyable as they allow her to participate in all sorts of adventures with the people she meets.

I'm watching the newly released 'Borgen' on Netflix. For some reason Borgen the original season came very late to us in the US. I'm liking it alot. I also started 'Lincoln Lawyer'also on Netflix. It's amusing - yet I have some Qs what kind of lawyer shows up to court with a teeny tiny briefcase? As a legal secretary I know this just is not the case.

We are nearing the end of Handmaid’s Tale Season 4. All the prolonged extreme closeups of June’s face - as Elisabeth Moss expresses all the emotions an actor can express - is getting a bit much, but the story is still engrossing. To me, anyway. It’s getting harder to keep Mr. Kimby interested in watching it. I’m not seeing signs of the hoped-for happy ending, but there’s always Season 5! (No spoilers please, if you have watched it.)

Season Five ~
June convinces her paramour to convince some of the other men to start a drumming circle. It gains traction & soon the guys are getting in touch with their feelings and true attitudes toward women. Sheepishly, they plan a coup to overthrow Gilead. There is also a great deal of sneaking across the border into Canada with The Wives soon wanting to get back into halter tops and summer barbecues. The recalcitrant architects of Gilead are rounded up, tried, and wind up in federal prison with Donald Trump.
The End

Watch it now or watch it later, but don't deny yourselves the pleasures of The Man Who Fell to Earth. It has a stately pace which makes each unfolding or ah-ha moment that much more pleasurable. I strongly recommend seeking out the David Bowie film & watching it before plunging into this series. www.denofgeek.com/tv/the-man-who-fell-to-earth-movie-comparison/

We didn't like the final episode of Frost as his sidekick and policeman friend is killed when a screwed up ex-husband tries to prevent his wife from marrying Frost and drives full speed into the grooms car. After all those episodes I am disappointed the writers couldnt think of a happy ending for a change. Why does someone have to die to either be written out the series or end it. Couldn't they just go to Mexico....

We just watched the latest series of Stranger Things Jeff loves it.
The Great British Sewing Bee is entertaining, I was astonished when they knocked up a Parker coat in a few hours last week (pattern challenge) speaking as someone who hasn't successfully completed a garment (for myself) since I got the sewing machine last September!

Sheepish look on my face but i am actually now enjoing The Time Travellers Wife - a little light relief, at least I find so. Really?! Okay. I am going to give it another chance. I freely admit that I've rejected stuff after a brief glimpse (GoT) in the past, to which I later became totally addicted. And thanks for that great list. From the ones on the list I've watched (Derry Girls, Gentleman Jack, Julia, My Brilliant Friend, Ozark), I have to say that the list-makers have great taste. From my list, I'd recommend all but Julia unreservedly. I'm not anti-Julia, but would only recommend it to some people & not others. I also watched Stranger Things, but it's just not my cup of tea.

My taste finds "Better Call Saul" and "Inside Number 9" far ahead of those on the list. Monday in the Better Call Saul time slot on AMC, I'm looking forward to the new series "Dark Winds" drawn from Tony Hillerman's Mystery novels set in Navajo country. Mr. Hillerman was a member of the long long trip I took in Turkey. For being so famous, he was kindly and sympa.

New episodes of Peaky Blinders are now available on Netflix.
I am curious as to how they portray the death of Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) who died of cancer in 2021.
She was one of my favorite characters in the series and her absence will surely be mourned by fans of the series.

Although I can't say that episode 3 of The Time Traveler's Wife totally reconciled me with the series, it definitely intrigued me enough to continue watching. My main reproach is the sort of rip off of the the Amelia Pond story of Doctor Who, but since the story is much more adult oriented, it is definitely more of an emotional roller coaster.

Based on Lugg's imprimatur, I gave the 2nd episode of Time Traveler's Wife another try. I still find Rose Leslie (the Wife) somewhat blah, although the makers of this series seem to be in love with her. On the other hand, Theo James (the Traveler), who has the looks warranting dismissal as just another pretty face, actually seems to be quite a good actor. That said, so far the plot is sluggish and repetitive (in just 2 episodes!), so no one can really shine. And in the repetitive department, the same shock value scene being shown over and over again was objectionable.
Luckily, I've forgotten most of the book, so am interested in seeing how the time-traveling premise plays out. That will probably keep me watching for a while longer.

Well I am now awaiting episode 6 of the Time Traveller's Wife and still enjoying the glorious crapiness of it - real escapism . But ..for great TV viewing I watched the first episode of Sherwood last night ...this review may seem over the top but it what was led me to it... www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/jun/13/sherwood-review-the-cleverest-most-compelling-show-ive-seen-in-yearsAnyway for me its fascinating and brings back so many memories as I was living in Nottinghamshire at the time and had to drive from my home in an ex mining village through the police and picket lines daily when I went to work at a hospital in the centre of Nottingham . My then father in law was staunchly UDM in keeping with many Notts miners. However it raised many debates between us as my maternal grandmother and family were from a Yorkshire mining background , some of whom were staunchly in the camp of Arthur Scargill. And of course then as now I was anti Tory and all it stands for.

I watched episode three of Time Traveler's Wife last night & it will be the last one for me, I'm afraid. No one is happier to suspend disbelief than I, but that show just doesn't do it for me.
On the other hand, I am super grateful to hear about Sherwood, which looks to be fantastic in every way, not to mention it has Lesley Manville, whom I venerate.

Anyway for me its fascinating and brings back so many memories as I was living in Nottinghamshire at the time All the best people have at some time lived in Nottinghamshire. I've answered your other post. I had a long term girlfriend working/training at the QMC and my route there always took me through the area of the series. Yes, most of us if not virtually 99% were UDM and whilst having no love for Thatcher at all, we weren't going to be bullied by the shredded wheat headed Scargill into joining an illegal strike we would have joined anyway had it not been so - but obviously, there's more to it than just that.
