Yeah, I never got the cultish fascination with that movie. I came to this thread to announce that I did start watching Broadchurch season three & got completely hooked from the first few minutes. I'm now caught up with everyone else & believe the most recent episode airs today. Still don't really like looking at David Tennant, though.

I don't think you'll regret it bixa, there's some cracking acting in it. Julie Hesmondhalgh goes from strength to strength, and there's a scene coming up in Episode 5 between her and Sarah Parish (one of my favourite actors), where she puts in a powerful psychological twist with just the slightest change of facial expression - and it's nothing to do with the whodunnit plotline, just a reflection of the knock-on effects on relationships. This is outstanding tv -- no false moves in plotting, casting, script, production values, AND Billy Bob Thornton. The sound track alone might be reason enough to watch it, but .... Billy Bob Thornton!

I find In Bruges just as gripping and odd each time I watch it. The idea that Ralph Fiennes can be even more evil than in Harry Potter and that Colin Farrell can be touching even after murdering a child is quite remarkable.

Yesterday evening was an odd combination. I caught up with my saved recordings of the genteel petty cattiness and oneupwomanship of a re-run of the version of Mapp and Lucia with Anna Chancellor and Miranda Richardson: only to follow it with the final episode of Broadchurch, with the rapist revealed in a gripping confession that was all the more horrifying for its matter-of-factness (shan't say any more!) I adore In Bruges and am a firm Colin Farrell fan.
I need to give Mapp and Lucia another chance. Maybe I was having a snowflake moment when I looked at it before, as I found it a tad too vicious. That said, I'm now finally raptly watching House of Cards (US version, 1st season) and it's hard to get more cynically vicious than that. Actually, a friend of mine claims she abandoned the UK version for the US version as she found the UK version too unrelievedly nasty.
Also watched the finale of Broadchurch and fully concur with Patrick's assessment. I think it contains an element which is designed to carry over into another season.

I haven't watched any Broadchurch, but in today's Guardian, they give away the ending, saying a lot of people were shocked by it.
I did see In Bruges at the movies -- great film.

Also watched the finale of Broadchurch...... I think it contains an element which is designed to carry over into another season. No chance. The writer has moved on to take over Doctor Who, and ITV was very firmly stating that this series was the last. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

Though the viciousness is vitiated by the triviality of the people and their concerns. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

I think Broadchurch 3 was excellent in so many ways , sensitive and used WRASAC throughout to advise, hence the sensitivity re rape/ sexual violence. Agree Hesmondhalgh and Parish were great. What a shame its over. So onto Dr Who Series 10 has started here but I am playing catch up- and what a start fab first episode. I cant remember if anyone else has posted about Line of Duty which is now into its 4th series. Although I really enjoyed series 1, I missed 2 and 3, so started afresh for 4 . Vicky McClure ( who also acted in the Replacement mentioned by Patrick and This is England )features in this with series newcomer Thandi Newton. Really entertaining and probably my "must watch" programme now Broadchurch has finished . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_of_DutyI've also recently watched one episode of a series my son raves about and now I want to see more, " The Last Kingdom " Series 2 is now showing on BBC 2 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Kingdom_(TV_series)

I haven't watched any of the Broadchurch series, in fact we rarely watch the channel that shows it...we basically watch the BBC channels, CHANNEL 4 in all its incarcerations and a bit of Netflix. I think that my snobbery means that we miss such glittering jewels as Ant and Dec's Big Night in, X Factor, Pop Idol and Britain's Got Talent...not. Of course we miss things like Broadchurch tho....
Watching Netflix 'The Crown' atm....can't think why altho it's nice to have a break from the post apocalyptic dark drama zombie fest that my beloved seems firmly entrenched in. I'm no royalist but The Crown does have some nice locations and Matt Smith in its favour....

I liked The Crown & will watch the next season. I really dislike Winston Churchill and John Lithgow's great performance allowed me to wallow in that dislike.
Today I watched the 2nd episode of the new season of The Leftovers. I approached it like a chore and even thought about abandoning the series entirely, as I found the last episode so tedious. Lo & behold, this episode was was extremely well done and absorbing. Carrie Coon is really an exceptional actress. I'm also watching House of Cards, so get to see her in a completely different role.

I have now watched three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale and am steeling myself to watch a fourth. It's harrowing stuff, particularly when you think that Mike Pence is one heartbeat away from the presidency of the US. The production is absolutely brilliant and "real" feeling and the use of music is inspired. If anyone has the slightest doubt about Elisabeth Moss's acting ability, the first episode will knock that into a cocked hat. I was already a fan, but am still blown away by her performance. The first 12 seconds of the over-voice in this trailer are chilling considering what is in the White House right now and the bill the #@^&$* Republican Congress voted for today.

The BBC has just started showing a news series of Hinterland. Gloomier than ever, now we discover how far Superintendent Prosser will go to protect his secret. I suspect they can't go much further with this one. My blog | My photos | My video clips"too literate to be spam"

PHEW, am so in tune with your post Bixa. I just watched the most recent episode (5) and cannot begin to tell y'all how well done and albeit frightening this series is given our current "state of affairs' here in the US. Elisabeth Moss is stellar as is Ralph Fiennes and some of the other cast whose names I can't recall. In short, brilliant and masterful.

I don't want to put in any spoilers, but did you laugh out loud at the ending music of episode 5?
Elisabeth Moss, besides totally owning her character, is also the producer of the series.
That particular Fiennes is Joseph, not Ralph.

Meanwhile, Episode 6 of The Tale continues to keep one rapt and longing for more. The intensity of the performances etc. remains brilliant.
(as an aside, while watching this particular episode, I could not help but think how much Mrs. Waterford reminded me in some scenes of the character Betty from Mad Men, not just the physicality but more in the line of resigned affect and both characters having an intensity in their stance on women's strength and a quest to be heard. Odd, the similarities).

We watched Moonlight on DVD last night. All I can say is "THIS was the Academy Award winner?" I was not engaged and in fact dozed off during the 3rd segment. I can't help feeling that the award was a backlash against last year's all-white nominees.

Besides Moonlight - which won the Best Picture Oscar - we've rented several other nominated films in recent weeks, and all feature African-American actors/actresses: Hidden Figures, Fences, and Loving. There really was a backlash/effort to remedy the paucity of nominations for African Americans at last year's Academy Awards. Black Films Matter. ;-)

Of the movies you mentioned, Kimby, the only one I've seen is Hidden Figures, which I thought was kind of simplified and earnest, more suitable to a junior high crowd. Oddly, my favorite in it was Kevin Costner, not an actor who has ever much appealed to me. I loved The Nice Guys and will definitely watch it again. I could not help but think how much Mrs. Waterford reminded me in some scenes of the character Betty from Mad Men, not just the physicality but more in the line of resigned affect and both characters having an intensity in their stance on women's strength and a quest to be heard. Odd, the similarities That's an interesting take, Casimira. What I mostly see in the character is a deliberate attempt on the part of the show's makers to draw parallels between her and the perfect Nazi wife. Even her chignon adds to the illusion. The actress, Yvonne Strahovski, does wonderful things with her part, in fact rather reminds me of Kirsten Dunst in Hidden Figures.

Bixa is definitely feeling better!
FENCES has Denzel Washington as a stern and complicated father and husband with Viola Davis as his dedicated and long-suffering wife. It was derived from a 1985 August Wilson play on Broadway, and it has the feel of a play, with most of the action taking place in the back yard of the house he bought with the money his disabled brother received for his injury. It's a long movie - 138 minutes - so we watched it over two nights. The feel of it reminded me very much of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.

The Handmaid's Tale started on Channel 4 last night so we taped the first episode. Its quite a short book so it will be interesting to see how the writers have interpreted it.

I will be most interested to hear your reaction, Cheery. I read the book so long ago that I only remember the premise, so I'm not comparing plot details of the show with the book. It is an excellent, beyond excellent work. Margaret Atwood is the consulting producer, so you know they're serious about being faithful to the book. It is not at all light viewing, so try to be in a strong frame of mind when you watch it and be prepared for any number of "My hands were clenched in fists of rage" moments. You may want to wait until you're in a couple of episodes before reading this, although it doesn't contain any spoilers: www.wmagazine.com/story/handmaids-tale-hulu-margaret-atwood-elisabeth-moss
