With South Florida's closeness to the Bahamas and with many Bahamians living here, private donations of items are omnipresent. Just about every church, business, building complex has an area to stack donations. Because of our closeness lots of bulky paper goods (paper towels too) are piled up as delivery can be made easily by boat. There is also a campaign to allow Bahamians to live here until they can go back. We'll see how that flies. Some are encouraging Mr. Trump to buy the islands.
Edited to comment that historically private giving in the US is always at generous levels. Watch how much the private charities collect. United Way, Red Cross etc.
A few sources here if you're interested. I contributed through Miami's United Way which isn't listed here.
