That’s great news, Mich! Glad your symptoms are just a sore arm.
My younger daughter and daughter in-law received their boosters today. I’m relieved, and my daughter is happy she will no longer have to listen to my nagging.

Good news in South Africa - Our booster shots are immanent. Touting J & J and to follow Pfeizer as well. I had Pfeizer both times and I think I would rather wait and have it as my Booster shot. It seems there is no criteria such as age. ANYONE DUE FOR A BOOSTER CAN HAVE ONE.

snippet of info from my GP...Mix'n'match, you get a much better outcome if your booster is not the same make as the original 2 jabs. Also, go for Moderna as it is the best mixer for the new strain. A-Z no longer recommended.
As if we get a choice!

Covid cases went above 100,000 today in France. I hope we are not in another silly competition with the United Kingdom.
I saw that France gave away all of its AstraZeneca doses to the Covax programme. That seems simultaneously nice and also insulting to me if AstraZeneca is really the worst vaccine.

The Astrazanica vaccine was very effective against the initial variants of coronavirus. Most of Leicestershire got it (AZ)..I think that vaccines were distributed as soon as they became available and the AZ was approved first here. Our boosters were Pfizer or Moderna partly because that's what we had and because it as felt that a combination of two different vaccines would give a broader immunity.
Russell has had 3 full doses and has been told that he'll need another in a few weeks. If he has any symptoms or a positive test the hospital said that he'll be sent antiviral meds as they're proving to be very successful.
I don't think that AZ is the worst vaccine, just the least expensive.

In the past two weeks there have been at least 10 people that we know personally who have tested positive. All of them vaccinated with a few also having had the booster shot. None of them have any symptoms. My neighborhood "new" friend across the street told us yesterday about her testing positive and feels perfectly fine. She said she welcomes the opportunity to use the time to catch up on much needed rest as she works at least two different jobs.
My question is; are other people seeing this as well? Also, it makes me question the efficacy of the test.

I don't know that testing positive while feeling fine reflects on the test. We know that many people must have had covid throughout this pandemic, but never got tested because they had no symptoms, thus no reason to suspect that they'd caught the virus. That was always the logic on universal mask-wearing -- we weren't just protecting ourselves, but also protecting others from what we might have had without knowing.

I don't think that AZ is the worst vaccine, just the least expensive. Do you think that's why the United States never approved it?

No, it's because AZ never submitted its vaccine for FDA approval.

There must have been a reason for that.

I've been reading a few articles about the reason that AZ hasn't been given FDA approval and it does seem to be a bit of a mess. The US trials weren't comprehensive (not blaming the US..it was a problem with the trial organisers not meeting the criteria/sufficient population range), then AZ themselves called a halt temporarily when some recipients had strokes...there is confusion as to whether this was tripped by the vaccine or statistically 'a normal incidence' However as the type of blood clots involved were unusual it had to be investigated thoroughly. The investigations suggested that the risks were minimal but younger people were given a different vaccine 'to be on the safe side'. Obviously this knocked confidence in AZ. We were told that AZ was 67% effective at preventing serious disease and death from covid 19....and this increased significantly after 2 doses. Pfizer and Moderna were both initially supposed to be more effective (around 90+%) I don't know why. If there are several home-grown vaccines in the USA Johnson & Johnson (?Jansen?) , Moderna and Pfizer maybe AZ don't see any point in going through all the expense of trying to get a foothold there when they have a sizeable market in Europe? I'm talking bollox aren't I? I sulked a bit when my brother got Pfizer and I got AZ...not because I thought that it was necessarily better...but because it was an mRNA vaccine which I found incredibly exciting. I'm just happy to be vaccinated tbh. An ex-colleague has covid atm...presumably it's omicron because she says that it just feels like a cold.

Today is the first day I feel good about the Covid recovery of my son and his partner. We did not have Xmas down at the beach house as planned. Instead my son who looked ill when he said goodbye see you later, went for a Covid test just to make sure he would not pass Covid on to us on Xmas day if he was infected. . Well, shock of shocks - POSITIVE. The test did not say if it was Omnicron or any other Covid strain. I felt terrified. He is not a well person generally having had Myocarditis this year. All we could hope for was that the J&J vaccine had done its job. It seems that way from his text saying they felt better today. That is a great relief but still have another 4 days to go with self isolation according to his calculation of when he first felt very poorly. I never want to see another Xmas like this - ever!

The experts here are very happy with the outcome of the tracking policy. The Govt trackers were taking ages to come up with locations so a bunch of young people took it on as a civic project. They are getting the information they need in hours, not weeks and it is all being put onto Facebook. So far they have done 22% of the state. Other positives you may know about ... With vaccination the disease is running out of victims which means it is about the same as Influenza. In 3-4 months they expect it to be about the strength of a common cold. Oz has just completed work on a tablet which kills any viruses in the throat if taken within about 3 hours of contact. We have 90% vaccinated X2 and a big push to get the booster done. I think we are winning.

It has been announced that we no longer have track and trace. I'm darn sure it was totally falsified and useless.
The most concern is HOW? How did I let the virus get into my breathing ability even through a mask.? Was it the guy who was selling his sample selection of fabric through a mask and sitting a metre to two away from me? OR, was it something I touched and transmitted to my nose or eyes. This is a continually dilemma in trying to find out exactly where and when the virus got me! OR, should I say would be questions buzzing my brain if I had contracted Covid..

Actually, with omicron, it looks like we are headed into new territory where covid isn't as scary anymore and might just be relegated to flu levels, at least for the vaccinated.

I have never known so many people with positive Covid tests since the start of the pandemic ... all of them fortunately are not unwell or not needing to see GP/ hospitalisation anyway.

The same thing here in NOLA Lugg. In our neighborhood alone we know about a dozen or so people who have tested positive but are not experiencing any symptoms nor having to be hospitalized. T and I were tested yesterday and both of us are negative. City officials are concerned about a new surge because of the New Year's celebrations and a few of college football big games that are scheduled to happen in the next week or so. Then, January 6th is Twelfth Night that the commencement of Carnival begins. Lots of parties etc. It is also peak tourist season that brings in hundreds of people who will inundate the French Quarter in particular. Naturally, lots of partying and people who don't behave after drinking all night long. It's not a very good scenario and will most likely cause another surge.

Thank you all so much - Not knowing whether it is one of the old Covid-19's or the new Omnicron , all I can tell you is my son messaged me yesterday and said he felt that if this is Omnicron, he felt he would have died from the stronger variants - vaccinated or not. This just shows me how dreadfully ill one feels. Mr Tod and I continue to be OK except the occasional phlegmy cough from him, but then he has always had a postnasal drip which can develop a build of of catarrh until coughed up. It just seems so scary when all around there are Covid positive people.

Part of the problems with this infection is how differently it affects each patient. With most diseases the medical staff can have a knowledge of how it will progress and what to expect, but this virus is a maverick and is constantly changing its course.

The US is debating a vaccine mandate for domestic flights. IMO, it’s not about protecting the people on the planes. It would have two other benefits: - incentivize getting people who want to travel vaccinated, and - prevented unvaccinated and possible infectious people from carrying the virus from one region to another
Win win!
But it won’t happen. Too politically fraught. (I hope to be proven wrong on this.)
