Our case rates are much lower now here than they are in the EU, which is something new. Give it time, Fumo. It seems to wash over the world in waves.

Martinique is one place in France that is continuing the current rules, especially since there is a very disturbing anomaly there -- there are now more vaccinated people in intensive care for covid than unvaccinated. WTF?

Somewhere along the cold-chain someone has let a large-ish quantity of vaccine warm up. Very easy to do and hard to get anyone to admit to. The good folk of Martinique are possibly checking batch numbers with patients as we speak.

BA2 variant found in Houston “waste water” in levels 100% higher than last sampling. Expect a surge in cases to follow.

30% of cities tested had 1000% increases! And 1/3 of the cases are now the BA2 variant that has taken over in Europe.

In France they seem to be more concerned about hospital and intensive care numbers than in actual case numbers, which are rising again.
Most restrictions were lifted here on Monday, but at the supermarket yesterday I noticed that quite a lot of shoppers, more than half, kept their masks on. Of course, at 10 on a Tuesday morning, most shoppers are older so are perhaps more worried. None of the cashiers had masks, but there are still those big plexiglass screens in front of the cash registers.

I forgot I had this picture, taken @a week and a half ago, on my phone. The product was for sale in a local "miscelánea" -- the ubiquitous small Mexican stores selling everything from toilet paper to air time for cell phones. I remember looking at it & thinking that it was probably as effective as the asafetida bags my mother told me about. Here is the product with English writing, along with an article about it being seized as it was being smuggled into the US: www.sacbee.com/news/nation-world/national/article251755968.htmlBut lucky me-- I can still get it at the corner store ~

Normally China pays no attention to public opinion, but it looks like they might be obliged to relent a bit in Shanghai. I don't know about that. The Communist Party conference in September has to show that Xi has managed the country perfectly so that he can go on for a few more decades. So no Covid allowed to flourish anywhere, no matter how upset people are about being locked up.

We no longer have mask rules in France but it was recommended that people wear masks when voting today. It was a nice sunny day in Paris, but I would say that no more than about 5% of the voters were wearing masks (mostly old people like me) and only about half of the polling station officials. I wore my mask because frankly it is not an annoying constraint, but I hope that the majority is right in thinking that it is no longer necessary.

Our masks are supposed to finish on Thursday in time for Easter, but we are on a spike from the crowd that went to a final at football 2 weeks ago...who knows?
My 17 yr old grand daughter has a mild dose of it. Fully vaxxed, she says she just was very weak and tired. Calls it her "weak-week". As she has a hectic life...last year of school, paid job working with horses, 4th year doing Cirque du soleil training and dance school, overseeing the local primary school recycling system she started while at that school years ago, doing stuff for RSPCA and is also a girl scout Ranger, I don't get to see her often.
I nearly forgot...doesn't have road licence but has motorsport licence and each year since she was 12 has competed against the men in national competition, her times and skills put her in the top third out of 121 entries or so...over-achiever!

Anyone else heard that there may be a connection between those who caught COVID while pregnant and babies subsequently born with a higher rate of mental health afflictions?
This effect was noted after the 1956 H1N1 pandemic, when babies born in the first 1/2 of 1957 later developed significantly higher issues with schizophrenia.
Bet a lot of women will rue their decision to not get vaccinated or to go maskless in large groups.…
ETA I didn’t mean two year olds would have full-blown schizophrenia already. I meant that mental issues may be more prevalent in babies whose mothers got COVID while they were in utero, similar to the 1950’s pandemic that triggered an outbreak of schizophrenia.
Autism could also experience an uptick.

Since Covid started 2 years ago, it's a bit early to be testing for possible schizophrenia in babies born to women who had covid while pregnant.

An experienced and skilful practitioner could pick up on behaviours, responses and relating with other children and at least give a "heads-up" by 2 years old. I used to screen 2 and a half year old kids to catch those whom we referred on to get help before school entry

Ditto what Huckle and Fumobici posted. The same goes for Bipolar Personality Disorder. Often times these particular disorders get misdiagnosed. A young adult who experiences delusional, psychotic like behavior will many times be diagnosed as schizophrenic because of this. A full blown manic episode mimics schizophrenic behaviors.

There are plenty of conditions that can be diagnosed at a very young age, such as autism. I cannot imagine that schizophrenia would be on the list yet.

Hope you feel better soon Lugg!
Our Easter plans are on hold as well as we are still recovering from the flu. We have taken 2 COVID tests over the past few days but all were negative. My husband had COVID in January and tells me this flu is worse than when he had COVID (minus the super ventricular afib it probably caused). We did manage a little food today and my husband is sitting up today.

The Kimbys got 2nd Moderna boosters this week. And The CDC extended the airliner mask mandate till at least May 3. Two bits of good news.
