One amusing detail besides the fast food chains and Ikea fans who rushed back as soon as they opened, is that toy stores in France are having an incredible boom in sales. I imagine that parents are doing everything in their power to appease their confined children after both parties were driving each other crazy for more than two months.

I imagine that parents are doing everything in their power to appease their confined children after both parties were driving each other crazy for more than two months. I am so proud to report that although my grandsons have been confined to their home all this lockdown and do lessons for school via the internet sent directly from their school , starting at 7.30 prompt for assembly. Their mother reports that they are up and seated in front of their computers after rising at 7am, watching and listening to the normal assembly, and then commencing with their daily lessons. I was picturing them lolling in bed till 9 or 10 then reluctantly sitting in front of the computer etc et. Not a bit of it. Well done my beautiful boys.

I really enjoy this Guardian columnist, Marina Hyde:
"So lockdown is eased, sparking one of nature’s most stunning spectacles: the great migration of the humans across the Ikea car park. The Swedish store has replaced Wimbledon as the perfect sport for people who don’t like sport. They even have the dawn queuing. Do you have tickets this year? I’m indifferent to the furniture but I do like to watch the arguments. Seeing couples becoming a singles match over a side table is a quintessential part of British life, like cream teas and the Conservative party polling over 40%."

Schools reopen this friday in belgium. I am not happy but she wants to go. My wife says that children should basically be 'clean' after being confined and due to infection time should be out of school before virus could hit back... Why not.

People feared the worst when the schools reopened in France, but the worst has not happened. Only about 50% of the children have gone back to school, though, and not every day.
As to why children are less prone to getting or transmitting coronavirus, I heard today that one of the medical theories (along with all of the others of course), is that children have runny noses, and this keeps the virus from getting in.

That sounds like Trumpian logic. So nobody with hay fever should be getting covid19?

I have allergies this time of year, and have to blow my nose constantly. I strongly doubt that is the reason for children's relative immunity.

I do hope my neighbours don't think I've finally gone raving mad, exploding in laughter at 7 a.m. (fortunately not sputtering coffee on my keyboard). She just nails that bullshit.

Lagatta, I'm sure your neighbors (if they were even awake yet) would welcome and enjoy the sound of laughter. I know I would.

Sweden’s experiment seems to have failed somewhat. If has one of the highest deaths per capita in the world.
The mental health of those who DIDN’T die may be better than in other countries, however, plus their economy isn’t as devastated as the “better-behaved” countries.
Yet. It’s a work in progress.

Yes, Marina Hyde is very good even though I am far from being a Guardian reader.

I have allergies this time of year, and have to blow my nose constantly. I strongly doubt that is the reason for children's relative immunity. This is mysterious. We are going into winter, but my sinus has never been worse. Blocked nasal passages, sneezing, and all together a dripping nose.

One of the members of France's scientific council said today that things are much better in France. There are now about 1000 new infections a day, compared with 80,000 in March. And they are mostly in clusters, so it's easier to track and trace.

Yes, they have said that things are "under control" and if there is a 2nd phase, they'll know how to deal with it this time.
Time will tell. But also, everybody has said that it will never be able to lock down the country like the first time, because people will not accept it a second time. So we have to learn to deal with alternative solutions if necessary.
I am particularly happy that the doomsayers appear to have been wrong about reopening schools.

As usual I tuned into SKY. News this morning and was quite shocked to learn that masks have not been compulsory in the UK. Ok, so the little bugger can penetrate the fabric one has used but that is why it should have a slot for a filter to be inserted. And why the F…K wait until 15th! The doctors are telling people to cover up which I must say is law here already. Nobody is allowed to enter a food, or any other store, sans a mask. And you get sprayed or gelled until you are totally free of the bug! IF, only IF, our stats show the Covid-19 is becoming more prevalent then I have no idea why because we are all trying our best. There will be something we are not aware of.

I love the Grauniad We have 40,000+ dead according to the government figures. Not as bad as USA but they have 6x our population. Not doing very well here. I'm just trying to get fighting fit for the winter by losing weight. Gives me something to concentrate on that isnt the news. A lot of the people who have died were significantly overweight.

I see the WHO has now changed its advice about wearing of masks in public.

In the French news one of the subjects was that factories are still churning out masks but nobody is ordering them anymore. I guess we'll end up with the stockpile that we should have had earlier.

They are being more strict and cautious here, but typically no one knows exactly what we are and aren't supposed to be doing. I asked someone about the curfew, which I think is 8 pm, and was told that is a suggestion, not a rule. So not a curfew, right? Went to my market today & a vendor told me that the market will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of this week, but apparently Saturday and Sunday of the following week as part of the contain-the-virus push. I'm thinking barn door/escaped horse. Anyway, note that I got this information because someone chose to share it with me. God forbid they should put up signs in prominent places. On a lighter note ... Day before yesterday I ran into a friend when walking the dogs. He accompanied me to my corner & we stood there talking -- I was on the sidewalk and he was standing in the street. I looked behind him and saw an 18-wheeler coming with its directional light on to turn so warned my friend. He got up on the sidewalk and we watched the great big dark blue truck go past, with emblazoned on the whole side. A little laugh because he almost got taken out by corona.

I read that sales of Corona beer have dropped 15% in France. There was a slight surge at the beginning of the crisis with people buying it as a joke, but very quickly people decided that it wasn't really funny.

What a spin artist.
Reading this paragraph from your link, I had to look again at the name of the president to reassure myself the article wasn't about the US: Bolsonaro has pushed to end state quarantine measures and voiced support for protesters who want the military to shutdown Congress and the Supreme Court, and allow the economy to reopen.

Well no coronovirus daily briefing today for the first day in at least 2 months. Thing is, we weren't informed that yesterday would be the last one. One wonders what's going on as the government opens up the country whilst we still have a thousands infected. They're talking about shutting down areas where there are pockets of high transmission. With big protests going on all over the country (black lives matter) lots of people travelling in and out of cities I do wonder if the zombie apocalypse is imminent.

Don't worry Cheery, I put earlier on in this thread that whatever is in charge of this crazy universe has noticed that this world is overpopulated and wasting resources so it needed thinning out. As this country is one of the most densely populated we were picked out for special attention. Remember, if your number is on it you are going to get it. So be a good girl and accept whatever is coming to you, as one of the good ones you are almost certainly going to be spared so long as you act sensibly.
End of lecture.

When this whole shebang has settled down we will find that even those in charge of destiny will look around and say "Damn Me I chose the wrong age group, I should have picked the breeders...and look... it has cleaned up the air pollution and some animals are coming back.. Next time I'll fine tune it a bit and take out the politicians.

We've gone into a new phase of re-opening here that has opened some restaurants to outdoor dining and also services. I was overjoyed when my mobile dog groomer called and said she could come next week. At least my dog won't look like Chewbacca any more, even though I will!
The other big news is that my lovely nail technician also phoned and I'm seeing her tomorrow. I have a tendency towards ingrown toenails so she's going to fix me right up. That's been the worst part of the stay home orders.
I worry tremendously for all the young protesters who are out day after day here. Many are people of color who already have a higher risk for illness. I dread the numbers that will be rolling week after next and fear a spike that will really hit some of these people hard who have been out marching.
