And yet...and yet...this virus has been around for several months now and I can't believe all the people who attended marches have spent the last few months tucked away in isolation. Surely there must be some who now have naturally acquired immunity. That is the best outcome that can be hoped for as the immunisation created in a lab still has a long way to go and may still not cover any mutations that are developing.

Thank you Mossie, calm and reassuring as always xxx
Questa I reckon that you're probably right...we will find out in 3 - 4 weeks anyway.
My sister is here tomorrow morning again...we will sit in the garden and drink coffee at a reasonable distance. It's a mercy dash...she's bringing me fresh compost.

We have a resident chef at our Airbnb working for Essential Services and preparing meals for the inmates of the makeshift hospital about to be officially opened tomorrow. He paid a visit to his Airbnb unit this morning as we were having our mid-morning cup of tea. He revealed that the Covid-19 cases are running at 2,000 infections a day now, and that the South African government are expecting the spike in September. He also said that it was not a good thing to wear a mask all the time. Only when in company of others. It is bad for your body to wear it constantly.
During dinner we were watching the crew of the boat "Sophisticated Lady" sailing around the Colombian island of San Andre`s. The Captain was telling us that the purchase of alcohol was banned during this Covid Lockdown but he managed to procure (via via )a huge stash before they sailed into the sunset. He also revealed that a month ago if you wore a mask on the island you would have been shot , no question. But now a month later you are compelled to be wearing a mask. Why does this switcheroo remind me of home?……..also the complete heavy handedness of punishing every little misdeed. by killing you….Oh yes we know all about that.

I determined some time ago that there is no reason to wear a mask when I am not near anybody. My neighbourhood is pretty crowded so I usually wear it there and also when I go into shops. And of course it is obligatory on public transportation. But on my long walks across the city I often pull it down. Still, I probably wear it more than necessary because once it is in place, I often forget about it.

He also said that it was not a good thing to wear a mask all the time. Only when in company of others. It is bad for your body to wear it constantly. I can't imagine that people wouldn't rip the damned things off at the first possible opportunity, but there you go. The other day I walked past a parked car. The driver had his window rolled almost all the way up and was sitting there talking on the phone with his mask on. It was a hot day, too.

The mask I wear most of the time was made by a friend and has two ties. It’s a pain to put it on, mostly because the lower tie gets caught up in my hair at the back of my neck. So, once I have it on, I’m more likely to leave it on even while I’m driving between stops.
My favorite thing to wear is a neck gaiter that I can just pull up or down as needed. I use this when I’m on outdoor trails where I might pass people, but I doubt it offers much protection.

Can you cut the ties off and replace them with elastic?
This may not work for you because your nose is more like a nose and mine is more like a beak, but .... I have the kind of fabric mask that sort of rises to a peak over the top of the nose and is held on with two elastic bands that go on the back of the head. Most of the time I push the elastic bands down to the nape of my neck and let the bridge of my nose do the main work of holding the mask up. This method definitely allows more breathable air in.

I really dislike wearing a mask and only do so when I absolutely have to -- like at the library this afternoon. Even then I tended to pull it away from my nose so that could breathe properly. I was the only one in there anyway, except for the librarians who were behind plexiglass screens. But I never wear it otherwise, like to the supermarket and certainly not outside. Maybe I would feel differently if I were living in Paris.

Can you cut the ties off and replace them with elastic? I probably could, but it would deface the sides too much and, since it was handmade by the friend who is recovering from a heart attack, I’d rather leave it as is. I saw a mask I really liked that had elastic sides and was meant to stay on while doing sports activities. It’s made by Keen. I plan to get one, but they’re currently on back order at my local shoe store. You’re right, though. I don’t have any problems keeping masks up over my nose.

I don't wear a mask but maybe I will/ should start to for shopping - It seems only appropriate to protect others and I guess it will stop me inadvertently touching my face although I am pretty disciplined re that already, the years of infection control training I had as a nurse were not wasted.
I've been hanging back to let NHS frontline staff get theirs done first but now many have been done I am going to book in for an antibody test for a couple of weeks to see if I have already had the virus without realising.
Anyway I am so pleased hat our gardens and some NT places have started to open. NT is by appointment only, tickets are released on a Friday for the following week. I've just booked to go to a local NT property only the garden and the grounds are open but no matter; I am slightly surprised at how excited I am.

Lugg, we're supposed to be wearing them here and many places don't allow you to enter unless you're wearing a mask. Also, how did I not know that you're a nurse?! I'm sure you must have mentioned it sometime during your years here, but I missed it/spaced it out. Well, I scored! A little while ago a friend dropped by and gave me this mask. I've been wanting one of these in the hope I could use it instead of the blankety-blank cloth ones that so effectively cut off the amount of oxygen I would like to enjoy. (I find it odd that this is the first time in seven decades that I've noticed that I'm cross-eyed. Interesting.) Brace yourselves. This is the first time most of you have seen me without makeup ~

Visors are not accepted in France instead of masks. They are considered to be good to use with a mask for people who want to protect their eyes.

*sigh*
It had its maiden voyage this evening when I took the dogs out. I carried the cloth mask along in case anyone wanted to bust me for not having it. Ha! About half the people I saw had no mask of any kind.
I have to say that the visor is about a billion times more comfortable than the mask because so much more air gets to those two important holes in the front of your face.
Tomorrow the market will be closed for two days, part of an irrational plan which is supposed to suppress the spread of the virus. The vendors I talked to were ticked off about it. It messes up their supplying routine, but worse, as one vendor pointed out, it creates more crowding as customers hustle to buy before the closed days.

Right? My thoughts exactly! Also, nice to see you as well. It's been awhile. Well, today New Orleans opens up ( the rest of the state went into Phase 2 over a week or so ago but, our mayor held off.) This means that bars and restaurants can open with 50% occupancy. But, for some inexplicable reason, no music. This I do not understand and makes no sense to me. What I'm most excited about is the reopening of the Riverview or as it is known locally "The Fly" (named after the shape of it resembling a butterfly.) I have missed this space terribly and passed many an hour up there watching the ships and other traffic on the river go by. Sooner or later I will explore going to the gym/fitness center because I really do miss swimming. But, I do have a feeling it might be crowded more than my comfort level will allow.

Our son had a grocery order delivered yesterday. 75% of it crap...chocolate, Pepsi max, biscuits, about 7,000 packets of crisps (chips), sweets and THREE tubs of ice cream. Oh and cigarettes. I'd been able to tag on eggs, bread, milk, butter and a few vegetables and fruit...
Thank goodness I've got a real order coming on 22nd...

i bought a new mask for each a. and me, today, and might buy a couple more - just the non-medical cloth ones that are sold everywhere, here. a's new mask has a picture of anna and elsa from frozen ... normally, i only need one mask, for public transport or shopping - don't wear it outside, unless it is on a short way from one shop to another, and it is cleaned and dried by the next time i need it - but we are going on vacation in a couple of weeks, and there you are supposed to wear a mask in the hallways (but not in your room, or the eating room, or outside) and i am not sure how often i can clean them there, so probably a good idea to have a few more. also, we have a long train ride, so might have to change masks in between. well, a. wears hers well for a while, but if she has to wear one for too long, she either takes it off, or starts chewing on it ... might also buy a package of disposible ones, just in case ...

i think the no music thing is because more drops come out of the mouth the louder you speak, and music makes people speak louder, then that louder speaking by the neighbours makes other people speak louder, and their louder speaking makes the first ones speak yet louder, and all the noise means the music needs to be turned up, so it can still be heard, etc. ...

In a way visors offer more protection to the wearer than masks do which is probably why many supermarket staff are wearing them as they protect the eyes. Thanks, Lugg. I wore just the visor to the bakery today, where there is a sign reading "no admittance without facemask". The word in Spanish is "cubreboca" -- mouth-cover -- so there is no mistaking the kind they mean. I brought the smother mask along, just in case, but they said just visor was fine. At any rate, they have it fixed so customers can't get too close to the counter, which I think is a feature they should keep even after all the distancing is suspended. You have a lovely face shield Bixa Just think what a nice sentence that would have been if you'd left out the word "shield", Tod! For the record, I did take a picture of me smiling normally but it was downright scary. In the posted picture I'm making a face on purpose. Well, today New Orleans opens up (the rest of the state went into Phase 2 over a week or so ago but, our mayor held off.) This means that bars and restaurants can open with 50% occupancy. But, for some inexplicable reason, no music. This I do not understand and makes no sense to me. Actually, it makes sense to me. As you well know, many music venues in New Orleans are relatively small frame buildings which are also bars, your "local tavern", as you often refer to it, being a perfect example. Great live music coming out onto the street for free -- what a great temptation for people to congregate. This picture should illustrate what I mean: www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60864-d143324-Reviews-Maple_Leaf_Bar-New_Orleans_Louisiana.html#photos;aggregationId=101&albumid=101&filter=7&ff=378186937Also, musical groups can't play unless they're fairly close together and good playing can often be a sweaty, spitty business.

Because the governor of North Carolina refused to guarantee a "normal" situation for the Republican Party’s convention the end of August (no masks, no social distancing), the presumed nominee has thrown a temper tantrum and will now be accepting the nomination in Jacksonville, Florida, just one and a half hours drive from my home. I’m sure you’re all insanely jealous. Right? Also, to make for more fun times, the city of Jacksonville is considering having cruise ships moored along the St. John’s River to provide the last minute housing needed for convention delegates. Meanwhile, covid-19 infection rates have been increasing dramatically in our state in recent days, but you wouldn’t know it because our governor fired the person in charge of the reports and the information is no longer being publicly released.

Htmb, that is horrible! Your whole state is being put at risk and I can't see how cruise ships (aka petri dishes) are anything but an ecological disaster for the river. When the reckoning comes, I profoundly hope your governor is tried for crimes against the people.

htmb, That is a sad situation. I don't know a thing about the politics of it but what hits me is someone's ego is so inflated that they have not learnt a thing from the last 5 months. We are ALL in this together...we have had to learn how to adjust, compromise, negotiate and win some, lose some. We have had to give up some freedoms for the greater good. We have had to admit to the mistakes we have made and correct them, not hide them, nor blame and punish someone else.
The fact that the reports of the increases in cases of covid-19 are not available means the medical workers are working in the dark. They need that information to plan for today and tomorrow, not two weeks time. These ego trips by officials are part of the reason that the US has such a high percentage of deaths, compared with countries with much less advantages.
The rest of the world once thought the great US of A was bigger, better, stronger, cleverer than anyone else in the world. We were even told by his flunkies how regal the Emperor was in his beautiful new clothes, then we looked...
