It turns out the order is for a billion masks. Yay China! a country that can at least satisfy our desires.

1,0019 cases in the UK now. At least they have started testing the frontline workers, especially those self isolating because they or a family member is showing symptoms. If it isn't Corona virus then if they are well they can go back to work.
My nephew's boy is quite poorly but the others seem ok. This morning there was a knock on the front door and when Sarah (nephew's wife) opened the door she found a note saying 'from your local B&Q to our NHS staff' 3 trays of summer bedding plants, a large tub and a small tub both planted up with spring flowers. She was thrilled to bits. The stores are all closed atm so the plants would all end up being skipped...but she was really thrilled. What a lovely gesture.

Weeks ago, back in January, thinking I’d be traveling to NYC and staying for the month of April, before going on to Arizona, I decided I should buy a couple of masks just in case. Especially since I’d be spending a lot of time in various airports. This was back before all the debates on whether or not masks worked. I saw that Asians were wearing them, even more so than I’d seen in the past, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt. There were absolutely no N95 masks to be found here, even at that early date, so I went on Amazon. This was before Amazon cracked down on price gouging. So, while I didn’t pay any shipping, I did pay $15 (about 13.50 euros) each for two masks. An absolute fortune, but I didn’t want to be stuck if I really needed masks. I knew ahead of time it would take several weeks for them arrive, but didn’t know they were coming directly from ShenZhen, GuangDong, China. So, now I have two masks, plus the two I found from the time I’d planned to clean out the dusty attic years ago, and I have nowhere to go. I figure, if S or I get sick, we’ll use the masks then.
Cheery, how wonderful! What a nice surprise.

Yes, a lovely bright spot, Cheery, although I'm very sad to hear that your nephew is still so unwell.
Htmb, when I had the masons over here tearing out the old bathroom stuff, I went to the tiny grocery in my local market & bought six masks. They were rather nice quality -- a cloth-like heavy paper -- and cost only 4 pesos (17¢ usd) apiece. I took two upstairs & gave them to the guys, then decided it would be nice for them to have the extras. Now there are no masks to be had anywhere around where I live. Oh well. Like you, I am staying in. Also yesterday I went digging through my stuff & found a small silk chiffon kerchief my mother gave me, which I guess I'll wear over my face if I'm forced to go to a public place.

We made some masks of our own. We will use them when going to buy food.

Can coffee filters be modified to serve as masks? Asking for a friend.

I still tend to believe that the masks are only good for keeping projections in and are of little use for keeping projections out since it has been mentioned countless times that the virus can enter through the eyes, so unless you wear goggles in addition to a mask, you really have very little protection.
Of course I have noticed how masked people look at me with suspicion when I go out without a mask.

Can coffee filters be modified to serve as masks? I saw one used by a cashier at my Chinese supermarket in the early days.

Apologies - I have not read back through all the posts since I was last here. Hoping that you are all safe and managing as well as can be . Personally I am trying to find the positives and there are some for me at least, so far all my family and friends are ok, I can still leave the house to care for my horses and to get some fresh air. I never made it to Skye for my holiday ....but don't care as absolutely meaningless really in the scheme of things. I am struggling though to come to terms with the fact that I will not properly see and hold my new-born grandson for a long time and worried sick as he had to go into hospital with his Mum a couple of days ago. They are now home ...today , thank goodness and a much appreciated hooray for technology as we can video call at least.

I have infinite admiration for the medical staff who continue to take care of all of the "ordinary" medical problems while all of this other stuff is happening. Lugg, I am glad that your grandson was properly cared for and is back home, but I also do not forget how lucky all of us are in the "rich" countries compared to so many other places.

My August trip was for an island to the south. Most of that part of my trip has been cancelled. I’ll wait a bit before deciding on the rest. So scary with little ones. Hoping all continues to improve with your grandson and his mum.

Good idea. Stops them coffing. i ordered a couple of masks each for agnes and me. homemade ones, but by other people who sell them (i am not good at this kind of thing), and yeah, they are not to protect us but to protect others (though i wonder if it will also help with my dust allergy when i clean dusty corners in the apartment) - not yet sure if and how often we will wear them, but i thought it is good to have them, just in case. some countries require you to wear masks when out in public, so better to have them if that becomes a rule ...

Thanks for that interview, Htmb. It seems entirely logical that we should stay far enough away from other people to avoid breathing their exhalations & definitely wear masks is we can get our hands on them. I saw a friend while out walking my dogs this evening. When he saw me, he stopped to leash his dogs and I did the same. Then he moved entirely off the little narrow park where we were walking & went down to sidewalk level so we could talk to each other from @10' of distance. Would that everyone would be so conscientious!
Whereas I imagine Cuomo sincerely wants to safeguard the health of the people of New York, I'm not going to un-quarantine myself because of a theory. Also, the Daily Mail is a crappy rag of a newspaper.

I consider all newspapers to be comics, and the Mail is the best. Incidentally I have The Times delivered daily, so there!

Hello one and all. Day 3 for us down here in South Africa and I must admit although the general population is finding it very very hard to comply with the lockdown, our stats for infection and deaths are still fairly low. All we can do is hope it stays that way. About the hairdryer……I saw this method on YouTube posted by Dr.Dan Lee Dimke,Phd., as millions of other people did. Seemed to good to be true and if it was, the health authorities would be handing out hairdryers not masks! I mentioned that I was giving it a go and got the negative replies back that I expected. So far I am just drying my hair!
About masks: On day one of our lockdown my son got a call from a chemical manufacturer brewing up gallons of sanitiser. He was also asked by the government to supply masks but had no fabric. So it was a delight to be asked to rush hundreds of meters of the appropriate fabric to said manufacturer. At least a little cash coming into the kitty seeing we have had to shut the business down.
At home - Cheery dear, at the moment no tennis as its 30C outside, No bomb-diving into the swimming pool as the water is freezing - 26C, but cocktails at 5pm for sure! Lots of grilling on the BBQ but my slow cooker has also come out of mothballs. Cooking once a day keeps me happy whilst hubby does the washing up, the clothes washing and general help around the house.
Mossie - my thoughts are always with you and I am glad you are doing well. Kerouac - I can tell you are not getting panicked although things are not good in Paris.

While Westerners complain about confinement, Indians don't have much of a choice about social distancing.
