Karate debuted as an Olympic sport this year. France won the gold. But it was an Olympic sport one time only and has been dropped for Paris 2024.
It seems to me that any sport accepted at the Olympics should last at least for 3 games if not more. Otherwise, why bother?

I don't know when synchronised swimming became artistic swimming but it has me hooked.

I hope that she becomes a coach when she decides she’s done competing. She has a lot to offer to young gymnasts going forward. I really hope she does as well Kimby! Her parents already own a gymnastic training centre so I imagine that could be her plan. I was so happy to watch her complete all her planned elements and see that smile. Our Canadian, Ellie (Elsabeth) Black came fouth, she too had to downgrade her routine due to an ankle sprain that took her out of the All-Around competion. We watched the women's diving this morning, a 14 and 15 year old from China came 1st and 2nd, they were increible. This morning also we watched the completion of the decathalon and 4 by 200m heats.

I must say i can't bring myself to watching or showing an interest in olympic games...
I see on FB that we won 3 gold medals, in 'barres asymetriques', heptathlon and hockey.
I love my 'we' as if I have something to do with it. Except paying taxes, and hoping some of it finances sport of high level.

I don't know when synchronised swimming became artistic swimming but it has me hooked. My kids and I used to call it 'synchronised drowning'. It was held in mockery and derision generally in Oz, though we knew our girls were good.

I used to like synchronized swimming but I hate the new style. The jerky robotic arm waving and head turning is just not beautiful, no matter how in unison.
And actually looks like a Nazi salute when done as a group.

I’m watching some Olympics every day, morning and prime time, and I think NBC is generally doing a good job with their coverage.
BUT. Several of my favorite events have gotten zero coverage on the free broadcast channel, at least while I’ve been able to watch.
In men’s gymnastics I always look forward to the rings, but their coverage seemed to start AFTER the rings rotation was completed.
And in rhythmic gymnastics the coverage included ribbon and batons, but not hoops and - my favorite, ball.
Did anyone else who is watching see any of those events?

I saw some hoops and also some balls (which must weigh exactly 400 grams, I learned).

They really had hopes after beating the other team in the opening round.

So far Oz has won more medals than at any other Games. Considering the youth of the team and inexperience at major events due to the Plague I think they should be given a medal for just getting to the podium.

Watched the women’s 10K race. What a grueling slog in the heat and humidity. And the Ethiopian runner who led the entire race, was passed in the bell lap by the 2nd and 3rd runners who had coasted in her slipstream the whole race and ended up getting Gold (Netherlands) and Silver (Bahrain) medals, while the Ethiopian hung on to win the Bronze.
The winner of the race collapsed on the track after crossing the finish line, and beckoned weakly for water while opportunistic photographers kept filming. She tried to wave them away, but they were undeterred.
Finally, someone came with a water bottle and handful of ice and helped her off the track. I hope she’s alright.

Typical of the Dutch. Stay hidden and benefit from others.
Well, at that level, all athletes are fabulous. They should all get medals imo.
Cuba has 14 medals, for a population of 11 millions. So by the same count, USA should have gotten 400 medals...
NZ has also an incredible rate.

I see there is a movement to get cricket approved as an Olympic sport for Los Angeles 2028. I have no idea what the chances are.

Maybe like with figure skating there’s room for two divisions in synchronized swimming: the athletic style lugg likes, and the poetry in motion style I prefer. Similar to the difference between the pairs skate and ice dancing.

You haven't seen my cha cha...oh you mean the break dancing. It is easy to see the powers-that-be are selecting 'competitions' that look good on TV and attract the young audience who are the ticket buyers of the future. The movements of break-dancing are like gymnastics set to music (?) and the daggy clothes are their reply to the sequins and glitter of other competitors.

There are probably more countries where people are break dancing than there are where people play cricket or baseball.

Our girl did so well. A Gold , a Silver and an Olympic record. We feel the South African government let her and her coach down badly. They had to scrimp and get the cost of the trip themselves. OK , so our President phoned her. Big Deal. Nothing of her achievements was pasted all overt our news. Am I allowed to point out the obvious? Probably not.

What?? political involvement in big sports? You must be joking! Surely these modern day Olympic gods and goddesses are above all that?
Oh, you mean the handlers, the hangers-ons, the ones that make the rules and decisions (and do very well for themselves by-the way) Yes, some of them are a bit dodgy...like the pole vault...the higher they go, the further they fall...he he he...good one, eh?...As I was saying to young Theseus yesterday...
