I have not watched much so, far , just the highlights , but today the BBC finally showed some of the dressage for the first time. Yeah !! A well deserved Bronze for the UK behind the USA and Germany. Charlotte Dujardin won a record-equalling fifth Olympic medal ( for the UK) and as she is fairly local ( as is Carl Hester) there was much celebration here. A few news sites are suggesting that a new record is on the cards ..
Dujardin ... continues a remarkable success story, having won double gold at London 2012 and individual gold and team silver in Rio five years ago on the now-retired Valegro. She also holds all three world records in the sport, and will now go for a sixth Olympic medal in the individual freestyle final on Wednesday.
Rooting for her but I don't thin kthat will happen and I guess she does not either , her new horse is so talented, but not at that standard yet - maybe next Olympics.
Anyway not to forget Isabella Werth from the German team .. Werth, 52, became the first rider to win seven Olympic gold medals, and the third athlete to collect gold at six Games.

We have been recording a few channels during the overnight and trying hard not to hear results on social media. We watched the entire men's and women's gymnastics qualifying as I am a huge fan (and former competitive gymnast). Yesterday we watched the men's team finals and the women's is currently on pause after watching the first 3 rotations out of 4 while Mr. M. is cooking some hamburgers on the BBQ.
Also have watched swimming, weight lifting and diving.
Congratulations to all competitors!

How happy I am that I underestimated Charlotte and Gio / Pumpkins chances - Bronze medal today in the individual freestytle. She is now Britain’s most decorated female Olympian. |

The only thing we've watched so far is a bit of the swimming and some of the diving. Terribly impressed with the two little Chinese girls...well deserved gold for synchronised diving. I'm not a sports fan but can't really escape it..every presenter almost wets themselves in ecstasy if a Brit wins a gold medal and it's always headline news on tv and in the newspapers. I can appreciate the effort, skill and determination the athletes have of course. The outfits the women wear look terribly uncomfortable...it goes against nature to have the cheeks of your bum hanging out of your pants imo...and good on Pink for offering to pay the fine imposed on the Norwegian volleyball team for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms.

I think it is the national sport of enough countries to qualify, including the host country. Making golf an Olympic sport perplexes me, though. And they still have those shooting events...  |

There has been a push to get chess called a sport at Olympic Level. I have no objections so long as they play naked as the original athletes did! Oh...lose or gain extra points for physique of course.

I just watched the men's pole vaulting. The winner, a young Swede with a French name, was impressive -- just flying over the bar.

He has been the world's #1 pole vaulter for two years and just dominates the others. He is young so he will probably become the next Sergueï Bubka for a few Olympics. This is unfortunate for the former French reigning champion Renaud Lavillenie who had to compete with not one but two different ankle injuries.

Not wishing to upset my lovely friend casimira but why on earth is baseball an Olympics sport? Not upsetting to me at all Mick. I didn't even realize that is was. I've watched only a smidgen of the Olympics. We don't have a TV and I'm not overly interested in the events. I do have a cousin from NY who is a 2 time gold medal winner in rowing. She retired in 2018 but then came out of retirement for the 2020 Olympics. The last time I saw her she was just a little tyke. She's 38. Lots of family pride at her accomplishments.

Baseball has been an Olympic sport since 1992.
Baseball is a top sport in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines. I think that in most of these countries it was first imported by a large American presence and then it caught on even after the Americans were gone. It seems to me that cricket is popular in at least as many countries, but the Olympics are too short to fit in a cricket game.

I don't know, these games seem to have been going on forever.
To my simple mind Olympics should be simply running, jumping, and chucking. To call skateboarding a sport is questionable, it is just a kids game, as is baseball, which is just rounders on steroids.

It takes decades to get a new sport approved, but maybe they should start thinking about getting pétanque on the list. I was astounded once to see a championship on French TV and Thailand was one of the top competitors. Who knew? Otherwise, besides European countries, Morocco, Tunisia and Madagascar seem to be among the top ranked countries.

Simone Biles returned to competition (after her mental health break) at the last possible moment, earning a bronze for her trimmed-down routine on the balance beam.
Evidently the “twisties” (a spatial disorientation affecting gymnasts) do not occur if there are no twisting elements in a routine. Balance beam is the only event that she could eliminate twisting elements, by simplifying her dismount.
She was so pleased/relieved at her performance that she clapped after her landing, even knowing it might not be a medal-winning performance. If others hadn’t stumbled on their own routines, she wouldn’t have medaled. But I don’t think that really mattered to her. Getting back on the horse, so to speak, did.
I hope that she becomes a coach when she decides she’s done competing. She has a lot to offer to young gymnasts going forward.

On my screen right now is a discipline among the most ridiculous and useless -- synchronised swimming. I will however admit that the synchronisation is impressive if they are trying for a job as robots.
I have to admit that the bright bright lipstick is the detail that disgusts me the most. Should makeup become an Olympic sport?

Perhaps some French culture rubbed off over the centuries of interference.

France and Thailand have had diplomatic relations since the reign of Louis XIV which is rather amazing, but as you know France was much more interested in Indochina (with Siamese approval) and none of those 3 countries is known for its pétanque teams.

Oh Mossie...did you actually watch the skateboarding? Those are still children and the fearless way the perform their routine, and having broken limbs in years of practice, put them way above gymnasts IMHO. Takes guts to crash, wind a bit of duct tape around the damaged limb and keep on practising. |

I don't disagree on the fearless performance ------ BUT. Our media has been full of the young girl who won our medal and she is a super kid, but it still doesn't rank with me as a sport. We used to climb trees as kids, and fall out of them, can that count?
